It happens! Especially during something like the pandemic. I hope he realizes that it doesn’t mean he’s failed at sobriety. Relapses should be 100% expected, the only thing that matters is how you deal with it and that you can recover from the relapse.

I'm a former addict from 16 to 27. I've been clean two years now, but it took endless relapses to finally get a long period of sobriety. I have cravings everyday. He lost the battle but he can still win the war. Wish him the best of love and the strength to stay clean

He nails it with rich prospering and poor suffering, with the "elderly man contest" and with the mean girls at every sleepover. Brilliant comedian -- wishing him all best wishes to get himself out of rehab very soon!

I believe SNL lets the hosts do stand up if they’re comfortable with it (usually stand up comedians). If someone without a stand up background hosts, or just a regular artist, they’ll do bits so the hosts have something to do in the monologue

I got a little worried there for a second, but if anyone could pull off a monologue 3 days before Election Day it's John Mulaney (and I was NOT disappointed) I don't tend to 'like' SNL monologues, but I think this one deserves it!

I can't believe I just recently discovered this guy, he became instantly my favorite, with the Xanax story and many others. Lmao so sorry to hear about the wife and relapse. I'm a recovering addict myself hang in there brother! Never stop doing comedy please! You're the best!!!!

He should call the presidential election something better than an "elderly man contest." Maybe something like "That 70's Show."

Mulaney as a social commentator equals pure gold. always loved his delivery, but this is just amazing.

I love John mulaney casually dropping hints that his family is an absolute nightmare, how relatable.

John, my grandmother just turned 85 and will be working the polls here in our rural hometown the same as she has for the past 40 years, only this time wearing a mask. I have NO excuse to miss voting!

“At ease” captures it perfectly! With most SNL hosts, even if their monologue is pretty good, there's a kind of constant tension as you expect them to fall flat, and when the monologue is over, a sense of relief. With Mulaney, there's none of that, he's just effortlessly funny, it's like breathing for him; it's such a joy to watch!

How does he perfectly capture the angst of middle school girls’ sleepovers? Oh duh, I forgot that’s a proud Asian American woman and she’d have been a middle school girl once.

That fucking sleep over thing hit weirdly close to home. Thank you John mulaney for bringing back memories I didn’t know I had

I just came back to check if I missed any signs here after watching his "Late Night" interview. Now it makes sense why he felt he needed to get out and work.

The stand up comics coming out doing actual monologues is much more respectable and entertaining than the scripted monologues the writers make for actors/ musicians/ sports people who host.

Tbf not everyone can do stand up comedy, even if you are a good comedy actor. If they only let comics host then we wouldn’t have break out hosts like Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck or Tom Hanks etc.
