You can tell it's related to how high this song is for him. He still managed to create a beautiful rendition of it. Only by the ending he hit those high notes..and it probably hurts the throat.

That thing at 0:18 he did is sooo clean and pleasing to my ears. I don't know what its called. I just started playing guitar (accoustic) last week and finally learned how to play the A major and d major chord.

At your skill level (and on an acoustic guitar) the chords are just a D, Bm, G, A and an Em in the Bridge. This is a good tutorial for the basic song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/laptr9SHeNesZKg.html After you get that version of the song down (with rhythm…. Etc) and get a few basic Bar Chords under your fingers, you can start learning the “Mayerisms” (or actually Hendrixisms). They really aren’t hard. Basically they are bar chords and partial bar chords up and down the neck with a few suspended licks and pentatonic licks over the basic bar chords. This is a link to how to play that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4xtkq59lLS0YtY.html. The teacher does this on electric guitar, but you can see from this video, John does the whole thing on acoustic guitar. I just learned this and am getting ready to do it in my gigs next week. Good luck. Remember learning guitar is a journey, not a destination. You never stop learning…. Enjoy the journey.

+Martin D. Think Jimi Hendrix, or Frusciante. Double stop pentatonic kind of things. Play an A major barre chord(Just an example I'm pretty sure he isn't playing A major chord). Now bar the 5th and 8th with your index finger (A and D strings 7th fret) and hammer on pull off those strings with the ninth fret. He may be getting a bit of the G string in too but I don't have perfect pitch or any actual training. Just been teaching myself for a long time. If it doesn't sound right it doesn't mean you're playing it wrong. May just need to play with some attitude.

It is indeed awesome. I finally just now figured out how to play it and I'm so happy. It's essentially in box one of the B minor pentatonic scale first of all. I know you probably won't be able to get much from a youtube comment, but it starts with a hammer on from the 7th to the 9th fret on the G string. Then you walk down the scale 7(G) - 9(D) - 7(D) - 9(A). Then its the same 7th to 9th fret hammer on only on the A string. Then comes the magic. The next thing he does is a pull off from the 8th to the 7th fret on the A string and then hits the 10th fret on the low E string. Simply beautiful.

Thats really funny .... that fill stopped me in my tracks, I immediately rewinded it a few times...then saw all these comments. Technically its not that hard to play....its where and when he plays it that just sweetened it right up. Fantastic player.

It’s old. Probably one of the first if not the first Martin made. That combined with his fingers, strings, possibly a different pickup, most definitely a good setup, probably a better nut, and maybe something else are where he gets that tone.
