I had the pleasure of recording Joey Castillo on drums (Queens of the Stone Age) for about a week at Rancho De La Luna back in 2018. It was a master class in professionalism... When the band would take breaks, he would be sitting with his earbuds in taking notes on the next track we would be working on or on changes the band just made to the current song. He was laser focused the entire time, never complained, was always courteous, and never missed a beat.

I've loved Nate Mendel's bass parts since back when he played with Sunny Day Real Estate. I've never heard a Nate Mendel bass track that was a wrong fit for the song. Not once. He does right by the songs, which is an incredibly important skill for a bassist.

His parts in Foo Fighters are too basic for my tastes. It's funny how whenever someone says "he does right by the song," they're talking about playing simply. Just reinforcing the false idea that parts are right if they're simple and wrong if they're busy. There's no one approach that will work for a song. I can imagine a bass line that is completely different than Nate's or Sean's that would work just as well. It's a matter of taste, not some platonic ideal of what "serves the song."

Oh I absolutely love this, I'm so glad this is becoming more popular. Like, when you interact with musicians in real life, especially non musicians, you really get a lot of the "awe" effect from them doing casual covers of songs you love in their own style. Sean Hurley gave me goosebumps!

I’d love to see someone react to the live Foo Fighters version of this song, the arrangement is different - it’s such a powerful stadium song to being with and then Dave and the boys decide to crank it up to 11 for the live arrangement, it’s bananas. Best band you’ll see live, even without Taylor on the drums. (JF seems like such a stellar guy & drummer to bring in to fill that massive void.)

I think this might be the second time in my life I've heard this song and I attended conservatory for bass performance and played professionally for a little while. There's a whole world of music out there. Your standards aren't everyone else's. I've played at jam sessions with guitarists who have never played a blues before, but then they knew every note to every Randy Rhoads solo or whatever. I find that mind boggling, but that's just the way it is.

At 3:34 he says "I'm gonna let Dave have the intro". Obviously that doesn't necessarily mean that he knows the song beforehand, they _could_ have told him after the first playthrough that it was Foo Fighters and just edited it to look like it was all revealed after the final take, but it does seem a bit odd. Sean Hurley is nonetheless still awesome and an absolute beast and I have no doubt he'd be able to do play this by ear this quickly regardless if he actually does it in this video.

One of the most underrated bass players I know is Henkka T. Blacksmith from Children Of Bodom. The only footage you can find from the guy, are few old backstage interviews, but I've never seen him invited to any bass clinics or tutorial videos like these. Sure a chance missed for content creators, dude's an awesome player, and COB is very popular world wide. I bet there would be a lot of fans from all over, who'd like to see and hear the guy play in a setting like this, and given the technical provess, it'd sure be something interesting for bassist who don't like the band too. Also, after the death of the lead guitarrist and songwriter Laiho, the band is no more, so there's no more music coming from them. Would be nice to have shout out to their music and legacy. Bring them back to people's minds. Would be cool to hear what a melo-death bass player would do with funk or jazz for example.
