I remember someone who said they were doing the job of roadie for him and said he was a true gentleman. It's good to know he had that to him as well as a remarkable talent. This is as good a blues interpretation I've ever heard.

Should I ever find myself at these so called ‘Pearly Gates’, and asked if I had any regrets, it would be that I hadn’t seen John Martyn live in concert. My younger brother ‘checked out’ too early in similar circumstances to JM and they really are kindred spirits. Watching his wonderful clips is a great comfort. Also, I remember the first time I heard Solid Air, mamma mia!!!

JM. One of the all-time greatest musicians. Everything about this song (lyrics, vocals and guitar work) is amazing. I could/will listen to this version very often for the rest of my life, God willing. One of my biggest regrets is that I never had the privilege of seeing him live. Thank God for the vast body of work he has gifted to humanity. RIP John and thank you.

I like this because it puts the emphasis on Martyn's vocals, not his guitar playing. I think his vocals were not given the regard they deserved, and this shows what a fab singer he was.

+john callaghan I was aware of some of John Martyn's earlier folk music, especially May You Never and a few other of his earlier songs but have myself only just recently cottoned on to what an insanely good blues/jazz vocalist and electric guitarist he was (his acoustic prowess long being the stuff of legend)...I've got some more discovering to do also...

I had the pleasure of playing one of his songs for him in the Rotterdam Bar, Belfast back bar after one of his 3 appearances during the Save The Rotterdam Campaign year. WOW.... there were only about 20 people in that lock in that night!! and he summoned his guitar tech to get his martin for me with "hey.... get my dreadnought... i wanna hear this guy sing"!

always LOVED THIS. Feel fortunate to have see John perform on several occasions. Both solo and with his band. I always enjoyed it more when he was surrounded by fellow musicians, as I think he did too.

Only got introduced to this feller last year by fellow scouser Tony Santemera whilst working in Minehead and staying in a caravan in Butlins. Nice on Tony-- How I ever missed this performer I will never know. Brilliance. Something else. This track and Solid Air are fantastic. Sorry I wont get to see him live.

After hearing this first, I was rather disappointed with Harper's song. John Martyn puts an agony of feeling into this that wasn't there before. One of those rare occasions when the cover surpasses the original... A true artist...
