John Lennox on The Evolution Debate

Oxford mathematician John Lennox explores the intricate correlation between evolution, Charles Darwin's theories, and the concept of a divine existence. In this thought-provoking discussion, Lennox navigates the boundary between biology and atheism, presenting a compelling perspective on the coexistence of scientific exploration and spirituality.

@@benohara284 everyone seems to assume satan is going to be horrid. if i go to hell then GOD is "punishing me" for my sins, but why would satan want to punish me too? satan hates christians. if i'm being punished by satan, then satan is doing god's work - that makes zero sense. hell is more likely to be eternity having WAY MORE FUN than you ever could on earth, this is what god hates, god wants you to suck his toes forever, satan is SAVING you from singing amazing grace for eternity. i see no reason why hell wouldn't be a great place to be, no mind control, no ten commandments to follow, just eternal life that you can probably quit if you get bored with learning guitar from hendrix or trying to grasp relativity from einstein. why would hell be undesirable? why would satan want to torment me - he hates god and christians, not sinners.

While I note Lennox didn't outright deny evolution, and evidently knew a few words about it, he wasn't able to show how it fits into the Christian narrative. Or to actually debunk it. Clearly, it's something he feels uncomfortable about, like all creationists.

That's an interesting point. Not sure if he feels uncomfortable about it, as he does mention in the full interview that Christians accept various levels of evolution. I am doing another interview with John in December and plan to discuss this in a bit more detail as I think you are raising an important point.

@@benohara284 From a Christian perspective, acknowledging unexplained phenomena doesn't necessitate an immediate attribution to intelligent design ('God of the gaps') but rather invites a thoughtful exploration of the mysteries of creation in harmony with faith and reason.

@@benohara284 Yes, Christians believe that God is more than a 'god of the gaps' (we can't explain it, therefore God did it) and there are lots of scientists who deduce God from biology or physics for example, not from the things that can't be explained, but from the things that CAN. Newton is one of them.

Evidence for atheism: First realize that what you believe is governed primarily by where you were born and what your family/culture taught you to believe. Muslims raised in Iran are just as convinced about their religion as Peterson. Buddhists in Tibet believe in the Buddha and not Jesus. I was raised a Christian and believed until I studied other religions along with the history of religions, and also read the Bible and majored in chemistry. Most people are just not that curious/smart to investigate other religions or biochemistry. Think about mankind evolving to be self-aware and not knowing anything about the real world. He tended to make things up and there have been thousands of gods created by man. Let's look at amazing claims in the Bible. The amazing "facts" about Jesus (Son of God, virgin birth, sent to save mankind, resurection) can all be found in earlier religions in Persia and Egypt. Christianity likely coopted these ideas in an effort to make a man called Jesus, a great human teacher of morality, compete with other old religions. It is also argued that we cannot have morality without God, yet morality was developed in most cultures before the Bible was writtened. The creators of the moral guidlines were just humans like Buddha or Confucius. In fact, all holy books were written by man. If a culture doesn't have morality it will likely die out. Christians will say the Bible is the word of God. Yet the Bible contains many of God's immoral rules. Examples: Kill your children if they strike or curse you, kill gays, slavery is OK. Read these and more of God's crazyness in Deuteronomy and Leviticus. So we don't use Gods rules per se, we have to use our own human values to get rid of God's immorality, and our values have evolved over time. I cannot even respect never mind worship the god of the Bible. Other problems with the Bible are its many contradictions and the fact the New Testament was written well after Jesus died. The Jesus stories were past down orally for decades and we all know how stories are embellished after being told many times. See Bart Ehrman's books about all the Bible's contradictions and who its authors really were... The other amazing thing about the Bible is it contains no information beyound's man's knowledge at that time. It would have been nice if God told us about germs. Instead people learned to say "bless you" to sick people to get the demon's out of them. Where did God come from? Did he come from nothing? If so, why can't matter/energy do it too? If you say God always was, then why can't matter/energy always exist too? In fact, science says matter/energy cannot be created or destroyed - the law of conservation. The big bang theory does not say the universe came from nothing. It says the current universe expanded from a very small starting point. Like a bubble forming in a beer. There are many theories of what came before this universe started with a bang. If you say the amazing complexity of life and the universe requires a designer, then isn't that designer even more amazing and therefore also requires a designer...? Please don't change the rules to protect your god. The fact of the matter is that man is needy and still not that smart. His beliefs have evolved from worshipping the sun to worshipping the King. People like Peterson says atheism gives no hope of anything after death and that says it all. Religion gives hope, and faith is belief in that which is hoped for... I think Paul and Art said it better "A man believes in what he wants to believe and disregards the rest..." An atheist would just like to see some real evidence...

I have to say, the title "John Lennox DEBUNKS Darwin" is the most misleading I've ever seen. Lennox does nothing of the sort. He has a rudimentary understanding of evolution, and realises that evolutionary theory went way past Darwin decades ago. It can't even be called "Darwinian" any longer, not unless you have a creationist axe to grind. All he rambled about was god as the word. That doesn't debunk Darwinian evolution or any other sort. Lennox can't explain how humans evolved, but biology can. Waste of time and breath. He should stick to maths.
