The screaming at the end, was him trying to cleanse himself of the pain. He was going through scream therapy at the time, which was a new and controversial therapy.

An incredible song from what is the best post-Beatles album, IMO. It scared me when I first heard it back in the 70s. Then when you start discovering the story behind this particular song, it is even more heart wrenching. Great vocal from John. Like a baby crying at the end as he tries to beg his parents to come back to him. In the hands of a lesser talent, the album could have been a disaster. Instead, it is a masterpiece....and seems to have predicted punk rock by about 8 years.

He put his pain and search for understanding to music. It’s hard understand how emotionally stunted society was at that time. He was the only voice to relate too if you were damaged in that way.He was a gift to thousands.

His mother got hit by a car and died, and his father was never part of his life; though mama, was never really present, either. So, John was always pretty much an orphan soul.

What an emotional song sung beautifully. Just a bit of drum and piano. Almost acapella. Daddy was in the merchant marine. Seldom home. Mom was not what a good mother should be. You are right. John poured his heart out in his music. Even early Beatles songs like "Help!" and "I'm a Loser" and others were John emoting.

The saddest Lennon song, and his goodbye to all of us, despite being recorded almost 10 years before he was killed. This was part of a psychological treatment called "Scream therapy". Allowing a person to scream all their frustration out. It was a primal technique he was into for a week, like most Lennon things.

Hi Cimdy....Very emotional reaction to a beautiful yet tragic but ultimately genius song....The photo of the bombed building at the beginning has reference to the fact that John was born during a bombing raid over Liverpool during World War 2 .....Just imagine...Hew was born while bombs were falling overhead from German bomber planes!!! ....Bullets from a gun ended his life and everything in between was probably the greatest music of all time.... RIP JOHN LENNON 1940-1980 ❤❤ Fin in London xx

Here's an example of why John was a much more important writer, and more creative musician actually, than Paul... Working Class Hero and Isolation, 2 other songs from the same solo debut lp, provide even more proof! It also is an outgrowth of the "primal therapy" (which emphasizes emoting your deepest feelings physically) that he hoped would help wean himself from his heroin addiction and reduce his potentially abusive anger. Thanx

I don't agree with you at all. Paul McCartney wrote some very creative things including his tribute to John Lennon and also let it be which was a song that he wrote from A dream he had about his mother who died. Then you have the song she's leaving home as well as the long and winding road. And then Hey Jude which was a song that really John should have written but he didn't. And when you think about it John Lennon did to Julian what he's singing about in this song. John Lennon basically left Julian and treated his son with Yoko much better than he treated Julian. And I could go on and on but I totally disagree with your comment. Both Paul McCartney and John Lennon were very creative into make a comment saying that John Lennon was so much more creative than Paul McCartney is ridiculous.
