As a huero, I think it also has a lot to do with the appeal of the 'American Dream', trying to achieve it and find greater economic success and independence. Democrats are so often framed as impeding financial success for smaller businesses, and Republican messaging has constantly been about 'protecting' them. I feel that if the message can be effectively communicated to Latinos that once gigantic corporations and uber-wealthy individuals start paying a fair amount in taxes and emphasizing that these taxes are not exorbitant, smaller businesses and private individuals will all reap the benefits (assuming Dems actually fight for greater taxation of the rich).

John doesn’t understand that Latinos can be white as well. There are plenty of Hispanic Neo Nazi’s, just look at the proud boys. And plenty of racism within the Hispanic community. He confuses an ethnic group with the social concept of race. There’s plenty of white Latinos whom identify as white first and Latino second. I know because I have met Latino white supremacists.

Biden passed several major policies that will improve the lives of regular Americans - everyone still hates him. You are under the mistaken impression that people pay any attention to what happens in government.

I don’t think that’s necessarily the answer, though. A plurality of Black and Latino voters are effectively evangelicals, and the Dems can’t just take them for granted if they move more progressive. Couple that with the former DFL backbone - the Union laborers - voting GOP, and the DFL has some serious accounting to do.

​@@hokogan Latinos aren't a one issue group though, a minority are but it becomes a smaller group every day: 2/3rds of latinos are pro choice. The same group as well that are viewed as typically more conservative like Cubans, voted for Obama and Hispanics as a whole came out for Obama substantially, especially the youth, as was the case with Cubans. The union labor activists within the Hispanic community have historically come out for Democrats when they have promised actual reform and change that has benefitted them; progressive policy. What Democrats need to do is stop letting Republicans smear them as "socialists". Most ordinary people, both white and Latino, like Biden's economic policies. But because they don't pay attention to policy specifics and because Republicans label it as "socialism" they end up voting for policies they dislike.

I love this guy. Dude has been killing it in Comedy, Action, Drama and calling for SocioEconomic reform for decades now. I don't always see eye to eye with his point of view, but, as far as I am concerned, his intelligence has never been in question.

Yeah, how old I am will show in this comment. I've followed John Leguizamo since I was 4 and he was in Super Mario Bros. Then his stand up, then Spawn. Then his other stand ups. Carlitos Way, Ice Age, Gamer, Daily Show, and his most recent stand up. "Freaks" and "Sexaholix" are my most favorite things of his. Dude is a comical mastermind. Obama allegedly deported more folks than any other Republican president ever did. I think all people are aware of what immigration means exactly.

This is actually not on Biden or the Democrats. They are doing the work. The issue here is that no one knows what's going on in their own government. Dems passed major policies that will make life better and give us a more sustainable planet and economy - but these are complicated policy topics that are hard to break down for people. Instead we have punditry and talking points and social media tribalism.

Not true. The Dems have a long history of ignoring Latinos until the last minute, and sadly, that includes not understanding their needs and interests. Leguizamo said this during his piece, as have Democratic Latino political operatives and commentators during this election (and have in the past).

While I know he's well known for criticizing (specifically) anti-Latino racism in Hollywood, to be frank, Leguizamo is a multimillionaire in his 60s and, based on what he's saying here, he's probably a centrist, or maybe centre-right(?) on most issues. So of course he's saying here that to appeal to Latinos, Biden should swing to the right. It would be shocking if he said anything otherwise. But what would an 18 year old Latina activist say about what Biden should do?

I could totally relate to John saying "we love everybody". I'm a mostly White Latino, and I have faced a lot of racism from non-Latino White people but none from non-White Latinos. Like other white people will literally accuse me of lying about my heritage as if Europeans didn't colonize the Americas. I've also heard similar things from Black Latino friends (in their cases, as if enslaved Africans were never brought to Latin America 🫤)

I’m not downplaying the very real racism that exists in this country, but I’ve experienced my adult Latino students say racist things about black people (and vice versa when they’ve found out I work with a lot of Latino immigrants). It also extends to other races. I’ll never forget one of my students saying that she didn’t like Indian men with a rather disgusted look on her face. When I informed her that my husband is Indian, she didn’t back down and repeated that she didn’t like them (the look of disgust on her face unchanged). Also, I moved to the US when I was a kid from Europe, but I still speak my native language fluently and hold values that are more in line with that country. I’ll never forget on two separate occasions after telling two people, who were both from Egypt, that I was from that country, they proceeded to tell me I wasn’t. In the latter case, this woman went on to explain to me why I wasn’t from there. Prejudice and ignorance cuts across all groups.

In Redwood City CA, people say "Llamame por atras" and "Wacha" all the time. That is proper Spanglish. It's a lot from Michoacan here. I'll bet you there are people in Michoacan saying "Llamame por atras." (In case you don't speak Spanish, the first is an English idiom translated word for word, and "wacha" means what you think; it means "look." Both sound weird in Spanish.)

Note about Spanglish. It IS a thing. Living in the border region, I know quite a few people who are most comfortable speaking Spanglish, switching back and forth using the word, in either language, that fits best what they are trying to say.

So you want Trump? Because that's how you get Trump.

I mean making a clear and serious plan to flip it. And funds them of course.

@@lml656 no, sweetie, that is not it. Code switching can be moving between two languages just because it's part of the flow (not because you're searching for a word). Moving back and forth between dialects of the same language doesn't necessarily apply to code switching, unless there is some sort of benefit implied. And then there is code switching in the case of some cultural groups, (check out Amber Ruffin's "I forgot code switch" song). She talks about how she talks with her friends versus how she talks in an atmosphere at work where she is expected to present more "white". You can look up the definition on the internet. It's your friend

My ex is Puerto Rican, and his dad is a MAGA guy for two reasons; he watches an ungodly amount of FOX news due to retirement, and he goes to church. Both had a very clear effect on why he was blowing up on X with his new right-wing account. Democrats have 0 luck getting a large chunk of current Republicans because they'll never break through FOX.
