This is my full set-up. I do nothing else to tune the reel. Less experienced casters may need bigger blocks, though. There is absolutely no need for anything more technical, tuning-wise, for fishing.

Hi I used to use two stroke oil as this has a very high temperature tolerance

Hello again I have a question about your setup. I notice that you only use one brake block in your reel. Is this because you being such an experienced caster only need one because of a near perfect technique ? I am totally new to casting and using a multi type reel what would you suggest I do in terms of brake blocks? Another other question is regarding the " cast control caps" as Daiwa call them. Why does one side have a dial ? It gives the impression that it should be used to regulate the spool speed, whereas you suggest using these knobs to centre the spool only. Also do you see the need to wash the reel with fresh water after fishing. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks for the informative videos.

Start with two large blocks, then gradually work down to whatever combination works best for you. Also, start with a modest amount of line to fill the reel about 2mm down from the spool rim. 0.35mm mono is good. The spool caps are not used as brakes. Set them so that you can feel a little bit of sideplay on the spool axle when you move the spool from side to side. Using axle pressure as a brake isn't done on surfcasting reels, though it works for baitcasting.

hi in your video when you spin the handle of the reel the spool runs freely even when the handle stops but on my 7ht the spool stops as soon as the handle does is this right or is my reel broken

Thank you, nice straight forward video. Is wd40 ok to use?

I used WD40 for years without problems, but not in the spool bearings. Thin oil is better for bearings, but the expensive reel lubricants are unnecessary. Just ordinary oil is fine. In the UK it is called machine oil. 3in1 is one good brand name. For wiping over the reel to help protect against corrosion, I put a few drops of mineral oil (liquid paraffin in UK) on a rag then rub the frame, sideplates and internal parts. A bit of marine grease on gears and other moving parts finishes the job. With reel lubrication, the less you use the better because too much traps dirt and forms grinding paste.

Is this different from a 7ht mag?

The only significant difference is that one reel has blocks and the other has magnets. General set-up is the same.

I thought that this vid would show how to 'set up' for casting. This is a maintenance vid.

John that is so lazy, you should of taken the bearings out off there housing, given them a short soak in lighter fuel, put on kitchen roll for a minute or two then a drop of oil or two then put the bearings back in and put the reel back together, naughty boy.
