It was originally supposed to be slow. I’ve heard and read where John Lennon sang it slowly when they were writing it. I personally understand the song more, it’s a song for help, Lennon said that’s how he felt when he wrote it.

John Farnham has had the same back up singers and band for man years. John’s over 70 now. Sang last year with Brian May from Queen. before covid hit and the music industry sadly shut down. He usually does his own solo concerts to packed out concerts of thousands, but has performed and recorded together with Olivia Newton John quite a few times as they have known each other since teenagers . He’s performed with Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Tom Jones and others. Oh was lead singer in the Little River Band for a while. But is hardly known outside Australia I. John Farnham is huge here in Australia, he’s been singing since he was 18 and is very much loved and adored here. No big head, he talks to anyone as if they were a friend or neighbour. Oh yes, I’ve been to a few of his concerts - his voice and stage presence is unbelievable and funny

It doesn't matter what John Lennon thought or said. He probably never heard JF's version of this song. But he did say it was meant to be a ballad. In fact if you can find a album by Collen Hewitt 1973, this song is sung in almost the same arrangement, and JF had a hand in that album. When later on John Farnham, released it as a single 1980ish, well it was huge. I can still remember one of neighbours having a party and playing it on 10. It's Jack's song written by terrific writers but it is his arrangement Even Tina Turner copied his arrangement.
