In this video I replace the fan belt on a John Deere 455 diesel rider. Symptoms were it was overheating after about 5 minutes of use and would cut the blades off as a form of protecting the engine. After replacing the belt, I was able to mow for a solid 15 minutes with no temp issues. I also inspected the hydro unit and found some seepage and a small leak that I told the customer not to worry about and I topped it off with stop leak. This is the granddaddy of all lawn tractors!

Nice vid! I own a 1994 455 w/Yanmar diesel & 1500 hrs currently. Purchased it in 1999. Came w a 4’ bucket loader, 60” mower deck and cart bagger. Absolutely love this thing. Finally replacing the water pump, belt & hoses, and found ur video. Last year the bearing in the Alternater seized. JD list was ~$500. I was able to purchase a replacement bearing, hammer it out and replace it for $12 plus shipping. When the engine wears out, I will have it rebuilt and then go back to town. Thanks again for the video! 🦌👍

Always nice seeing a diesel 455 there. At least you were able to get the correct belt for it and at least we know now it's a different belt that fit in all the pulley grooves correctly. Good video here and hopefully that hydraulic leak does not get worse.

Also, regarding overheating, there is a slide up and out removable screen on the radiator that needs to be kept clean to prevent overheating. John Deere really did designed these very well. Cheers!

Yes I'm aware of that screen as my dad had one when I was younger and we had to constantly clean it. They will clog up in no time!

For what its worth Yes there is a high output alternator. I just got a 455 and am in the process of bringing it back to life and it has a true alternator (does not stop on the magnets). Mine has a belt number of # 15360, 0215MX. Fun thing is I was trying to tension the belt and the bolt that goes in the water pump broke. Doing a real southern fix until the water pump dies so I can tension the belt.

That's good to know, I figured it had to be something since there are two belts that match to the 455.

I Have Never Worked on One Of These 455 Diesel Engine Mowers Before, So I Am As Interested As You As To Fix It. Shouldn't be Too Hard. I Haven't Finished Watching The Video Yet. Very Interesting And The Engine Is in Reverse In the Frame By The Looks. I Would Have Taken The Radiator Out , Might have made It Easier. You Managed To Get Her Done With Out Removing The Radiator so Good On Ya. You Know What They Say, If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It. Leak Wasn't Bad Enough I Don't Think, To Warrant Pulling It All Apart. WELL DONE

I guess if you have the money this is definitely a great tractor. Lots of stuff on one of these and I suspect not inexpensive to repair. Great job. Wise choice about not tearing into the seals etc. That could go south very quickly. Thanks for the videos.

Those are really nice machines! John Deere still makes diesel powered garden tractors with all bells and whistles, but they are super expensive, your looking around 12K last I checked for a new one. These machines are what I like to call, the Cadillac of mowers. But they are expensive to fix, because the parts are expensive for them, but anything diesel is that way. I'm not surprised that a 30-year old mower has hydro leaks, of course it does. Lets just hope that Stop Leak product fixes it. Every mower you let us hear the blades, but for some reason you didn't do that on this one. I wanted people to hear how much different these machines sounds like with the blades on, with a diesel powered engine, running a 60" deck. They sound nothing like your 22" gas push mower.

I think so, I cut about 20 minutes with it after fixing and it did not have any more overheating issues.

I've had a 455 since 2015 and it has leaked the whole time. When it stops leaking that's when I'll get worried. As they say, if it's got oil under it, it's got oil in it. lol

I was mistaken and it was $1100, not fully sure outside of a full fluid change and standard service. I do know the belt was not replaced!

It actually was $1100 but still a lot of money for a service. I know it's a diesel but this mower is in good shape and even an oil change, ps fluid change, and coolant and hydro fluid change should only be half that at most. I thought part of a full service was checking for wear items like belts, pulleys, spindles. This service looks like it didn't include an inspection.
