I love to mow with my 455. 2000 year model. Hours unknown. Great cut with rebuilt spindle bearings.

It's amazing how those 300 and 400 series hold their value. They're still selling for the same price as when new

I have never thought of lifting the front end with a loader. that 455 does a good job mowing.

Coming from someone who mows professionally for a living. If ya wanna get a longer life out of that pto, I'd recommend engaging the blades at half throttle if the tractor will allow it. Doesn't put as much wear on the pto

Thts Wht the soft start was when he engaged the blades. Most new units don’t have a soft start, but there’s some tht do.

These 455s are great! I’m trying to find one to put on a turbo. You can keep your 318s I’m going with a 455!

The 455 is the 4020 of garden tractors. Just a great little tractor.

Bought a 455 and did an oil change. Added the 3 qts of oil but the oil dipstick barely reads any oil. Any idea? Thank you.

I’d argue the 318 is the 4020 of garden tractors the 455 is more like the 4320 of garden tractors

Had 455 with 54 inch deck and 60 inch. The 60 inch deck was far superior in every way. Finest mower there was.

Clearing the cobwebs for the first time in the spring it sure does! I even turned it a couple rounds by hand before I put it on the tractor. On these larger decks there is a lot of meta to get into motion. Glad I replaced all the bearings last year!

I really appreciate your videos. Inspired me to get a 430. Only 690 hours. Question: the 430 sat for 18 mos. Has 1.5 gal of diesel in it. When started and under load it is blowing white smoke. Good power. Strong but white. Could it be bad fuel? Dirty/gummed injectors? Or what’s your thought? Thx again

White smoke could be a few things. My top two choices are some residual oil in the cylinders or the head gasket is bad and coolant is getting into the cylinders. Is there oil in the coolant?

I’d say just mowing wet grass and if you didn’t clean it enough caused that

My deck was completly rusted too, it's the issue with this mower, I found a company that rebuild old farming equipment and they rebuilt a complete new deck from scratch using the old as guideline, a lot thicker metal too, and a lot cheaper than finding a second hand that will rust again.

  • @mmrbeef

The manual indicates “high idle” or full throttle when engaging decks. The debate one what throttle to engage the deck and/or other implements is extensive. Honestly, in all the stuff I’ve torn apart over the years, PTO cycle # cause more wear than any start up. I’ve seen more wear on the PTO brake than any other component of the driveline. Clutch disks can look great while the PTO brake is junk.

Why would you pick it up? We just slide the mowers in form the side, hook em up. Mule drive and everything happens without picking it up,

I've got the other tractor and I have always found it easier to lift the 4-5 units up in the air as opposed to wiggling the 60" deck under there. The 54" decks are not terrible, you can just slide them straight under. The 60's you have to angle under and then make sure the gear box isn't catching anything. Time wise, lifting up the machine saves a good deal of time and takes a lot less effort.

Wounldn't it be easier to just drive over the deck? Do you really think it would damage the 11ga steel deck if you drive over it once or twice a year? i've been doing it for the past 15 years and still no damage on my deck (x-series 575). matt

From my experience the 455 is more quiet than the 425 or the 445. Not that any of them are nearly as loud at a 318! or as quiet as a 322!

Hmmmm, I’m not really sure. New from the factory my guess is the 425 or 445 had a slight edge on being quiet at idle.
