This was epic. Truly live, no synching involved. Awesome how John jumped up on guitarists shoulders, and I give the git player props for not missing a note! Yeah, they prolly had to edit it to shorten it but at least it was live!

I recorded this great-sounding, unidentified song off the air the week it was released. The next day I had tickets to see Long John Baldry and popped the cassette I'd recorded the night before into the car deck on the way to the show. “Check out this new tune I recorded-any idea who it is?” “Nope, never heard it before.” When we got to the venue we learned that the opening act was some fella we’d never heard of named John Cougar. He opened with the unidentified song we’d listened to on our way to the concert. *This* one. We enjoyed John’s set even more than that of “Don’t Lay None Of That Boojie-Woojie On The King Of-A Rock & Roll” Long John Baldry (not that we minded seeing his). Mellencamp’s setup and performance was remarkably like this one, except that maybe the band was tighter and more polished (as far as I can remember). Bought John’s great first album right then and there (and no others of his since, I might add). The only thing that is really on a par with “I Need A Lover” is “R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.” Good as Mellencamp is, you can pretty much have the rest.

"Good as Mellencamp is, you can pretty much have the rest." Interesting take and pretty much a limited view of JM. "Uh Huh" and "Scarecrow" are absolutely stellar albums with JM at the peak of his songwriting powers. "Scarecrow" is an all-time great album, the passion, the hooks, the messages conveyed. JM's first album only hinted of what he would create later on.

This is also one of my favorite John "Cougar" Mellancamp songs. My favorite Mellancamp song however is, "Ain't Even Done With The Night" from "Nothing Matters What if it Did". The whole album was good in fact. I gravitate to his early stuff highly over his later material. He's said in interviews that his song writing improved over time and typically that's true. But I didn't like most of his later material at all.

Kinks came out and did "AH" show. No way would I want to have followed John that night. I wasn't impressed by the Kinks show, as I was The Zone and Cougar.
