    So I do agree with John to a degree on the trigger not being the most important part. The longer the distance, the more important it becomes to prevent yourself from imparting unnecessary force on the firearm.

    While I might not be up to the 300th parallel, I'm still rockin' the dad bod. Push-pull works for me but where I see it really make the difference is the smaller shooters. When in her 80s, Grandma can start slinging 3" high brass like her chanclas, beware you with evil intent!

    I've tried this and it does result in less shoulder discomfort but I find that having to maintain strong opposing muscle tension in both arms is very tiring and tends to cause my aim to wander more. When I "pull-pull", I don't have to apply much force - just enough to make sure all the soft tissue compression is taken up in the interface between my shoulder and the buttstock. But with push-pull, in order to achieve the "shock absorber" effect, I have to apply a lot of force in both arms.

  • @ASPextra

    @ASPextra

    That’s true, but it should be for very short times. You don’t hold the tension for long.

    Common opinion for loading semi-auto pistols is to not drop a round into the chamber and then release the slide so the extractor has to snap over the rim of the cartridge. Yet, we commonly drop a shotgun shell into the chamber and close the bolt over the lip on the shot shell base. What Is different about the two mechanisms that the different loading techniques are used?

    I'd imagine it's because the shotgun extractors are larger and more robust. If we're talking about a pump shotgun - they're designed to be operated in a violent manner.

    You are not altering the path of the shell as it enters the chamber with a shotgun. When loading a shotgun through the ejection port, it is dropped onto the lifter, and the lifter functions as normal, controlling the angle of the shell into the chamber as the action is closed. It is feeding the shell just as if it had come out of the magazine tube and onto the lifter.

    Shotgun extractors are multi-piece designed to push outwards when chambering a shell and then a spring inside pushes the claw back in. Pistol extractors aren’t designed that way so dropping a round directly into the chamber is physically bending the extractor and just relying on it being spring steel to get back into shape. That eventually wears things out the same way repeatedly bending something back and forth will break it.

    I'm not really understanding the "why" of this technique. I don't care if the shotgun bruises my shoulder and I've always been able to keep the muzzle on target as fast as I can pull the trigger. Duck hunters pop up and shoot multiple moving targets with 3 1/2" magnums, followed by a chuckle and a reload. Please explain why this is better than standard shotgun technique. Maybe I'm missing something...?

  • @ASPextra

    @@ASPextra I'm probably too old and been shotgunning too long to make a change. Let me suggest a technique taught me by the SEALs years ago in Puerto Rico that you might want to try. I was Coast Guard and they'd send us over to the navy at Roosevelt Roads for firearms training to board drug boats. Shotguns were the firearm of choice and because the silhouette targets had vertical ovals you couldn't get a perfect score (the 00 pattern was round and would spread out into the 8 ring). So, the SEAL technique (at least back then) was to hold the shotgun kind of loose, tight against the shoulder, but loose with that forward hand. If you point shot at belt buckle level the muzzle rise would create a vertical pattern right up the nine ring (oval) from abdomen to upper chest. All nine pellets stayed in the nine ring, which was a perfect score. I doubt such a pattern was more lethal than a round pattern in the chest, but such a pattern did guarantee you hit every damned organ in the torso (and gave you a perfect score for your service record).

    If you're too old to change, this isn't a good resource for you. I've known too many SEALs to take any advice from a random one without knowing who he is and what he knows apart from BTF.

    @@ASPextra I just suggested you try it, for fun if nothing else. It's interesting that you can change the spread of the pellets to a vertical string rather than a circular pattern. And, as I said this was more about getting a perfect score for your personnel record, though it could be used in defense if one was inclined. Lighten up!

    Push pull only works on a shotgun if the buttstock is short and you can't actually mount the shotgun the way a traditional buttstock would to your frame. Again it comes down to shooter preference but this is not the end all of shotgun marksmanship.

    In defensive shotgunning it really is an improvement. And for defensive use most regular shotgun stocks are way too long.
