This album is so beautiful in so many ways; Elvin’s shimmery cymbals, McCoy’s elegant phrasing and of course Coltrane’s stunningly pure tone. It doesn’t get much better than this. This pressing really brings out the shine of this album.
This is one of my favorite Coltrane titles.
My normal practice is to have jazz playing in the background while I am creating in my studio. This record arrived Saturday morning , so obviously I took it and a couple of other recent acquisitions into the studio and got to work. About four minutes into Wise One I was forced to stop work. I started the record again, put my feet up on the desk and closed my eyes. Oh what a lovely record, I too prefer it to Love Supreme. Crescent has all the yearning and beauty of Love Supreme but is far more accessible and succinct. His cantabile tone is perfect, he may just as well have been singing the melodies. Tha (almost) ballad Wise One was the standout for me, the way he and McCoy Tyner interplay with each other is a lesson in space and timing and McCoy's solo, wow. Jones's touch is perfect throughout with Jimmy Garrison keeping him in check until Coltrane generously gives him his freedom on the last track to really show what he can do, Coltrane himself only adding his colour to the last few minutes of the song. Having played together for so long, this isn't the regular sound of a quartet, more a homogenised entity. Wonderful stuff.
Both reissues are super necessary and Crescent is outstanding for its track list. All praise to the prophet that is Trane.
we are living in the best time for jazz reissued records 🙌 Everything chad and Co put out is fantastic 👌 in my eyes ,They are the best !

Each Record should be produce like these one ! Worth any penny !
I'm not sure how I missed this album. When Blue World came out I did some digging into the session information and the film for an article I wrote for my blog. I somehow missed the entries in jazzdisco above it referencing Crescent! The sessions for Crescent were a month before the Blue World sessions. Crescent was recorded on April 27th and June 1st 1964, and the tracks that would become Blue World were recorded later on June 24th. The sessions for the Johnny Hartman album were done in March. He then wraps up 1964 with the sessions for A Love Supreme on December 9th and 10th.
Really looking forward to the Johnny Hartman, one of my favorite albums!

I can't wait
Great video Michael. Thank you
I've never listened to this before Michael - I'm still only in my first few years of really paying attention to jazz. But this is another instant purchase. Half way through Wise One I was 100% sold. Wow. Can't wait to hear what the vinyl sounds like now. Thanks for the video!
Listening to this one right now Michael, love it
I personally like this album more than A Love Supreme.^ Really a great sounding pressing by Acoustic Sounds. Great Cover too, although I don't need such luxury covers. The whole album has a great "laid back" atmosphere.
I hope they do all of them, crossing my fingers for meditations and john coltrane quartet plays
he became tremendously prolific after the johnny hartman album. i think he understood the race against time he was battling. his work became intensely personal and a paean to the ever-present connection to our creator. when i listen to coltrane after anything from '63 i feel as though i'm eavesdropping on an extremely powerful dialogue taking place between he and the almighty.
Very nice review and nice stamp of approval. Definitely will look to snag this.
Agree.. very fantaassticcc release
A good review and many people have in recent years referred to ' Crescent ' as their favourite Impulse Coltrane album ( it's mine as well ) . This new acoustic sounds pressing is excellent , lovely to have such a beautiful recording in pristine audio .
Great record, pressing does it justice.
Thanks for including a rating in your review. As already mentioned in a comment some videos ago, I really feel they are useful. Hope you can keep this habit and looking forward to 11/10 records!
Hi Michael totally agree what an album and a mono press would be great. In particular the track Wise One, just wow! I definitely prefer Crescent to A Love Supreme
Great review of Crescent Michael over the weekend I listen to the ORG 45rpm cut by Bernie Grundman and then new Acoustic Sounds cut by Ryan K Smith I was surprised I felt the Acoustic sounds sounded slightly better the sound was brought to the forefront all the instruments had a beautiful soundstage the ORG was more relaxed and more softer . Michael I really enjoy your videos great info take care . Lovellandrew

I look forward to hearing reports about the records you talk about. And yes, I to love that "crackle" of opeing a gatefold record. That had to be a must for Chad to happen at Acoustic Sounds. If you do not have it the book " The House That Trane Built" is a must have. It sounds as if you don't. Thank you so much for your time.
I did update my post re the new Bethlehem "Archival" series. Full details are on the BMG Bethlehem Facebook page. So far there are 4 releases... Booker Ervin ‘The Book Cooks’ Pepper Adams "motor City scene" Charles Mingus "The Jazz Experiments" Dexter Gordon "Daddy Plays the horn" The sound quality is better than the Blue Note 75th series but not quite as good as the Classic series. The covers can let them down. Sorry but previous post seems to have got lost.
Saying that you like it more than 'A Love Supreme' is quite the statement!! I have been eyeing this for a while, but after your review, probably need to go for it.

I’m playing right now. It’s fantastic for sure. But A love supreme is on a different plane. So it’s hard to compare. It reminds me of one of those firebrand preachers screaming “praise the lord”. The Crescent is a more pleasurable listen I agree. It’s a pleasure to listen to such great recordings.
Haven´t got anythingmeaningful to add but a great review from you again. You have a way of making the passion flow right through the tv screen. Good for me,bad for my wallet.😅. Cheers ´til next time.❤
It's good to know your opinion, I'm waiting for my tomorrow. I think it's important to have the different edictions as an option or for comparison. love your videos.
Dear Michael, you already have a mono version of that record! You just have to press the mono button on your amplifier. Rudy Van Gelder never recorded in dedicated mono after 1958 - there is one and only one tape from which he made his records, and that is the twin-track master. For mono records, he would just sum the channels together 50/50. It‘s even marked on most of his tapes like that. His intention was to save tape generations, that is why he mixed live on-the-fly and produced only one master from which all records were pressed, mono and stereo.

I have an original pressing mono and while its different than this stereo it's not better. Just different. I will say that my original stereo pressing of live at the village vanguard does actually sound just a hair better. Not worth fretting about but it was surprised I could tell a difference.
Great review. I am waiting for mine to arrive. With the weather we just had NYC, my album is somewhere between Pennsylvania and NYC. But I do have an original pressing that was left to me by my dad🙏🏾. Loved this album. I just want to hear the differences between the two pressings.
I agree that it's a dark album. I really need to be in the mood for it -- it's so different than like 95% of other jazz made around that time. The pressing is good, but it's not a record I'm likely to play that often.
My copy came today and when I got to the end of side 2...I played it again! It really is fabulous. Its brooding with emotion, with beautiful melody and yet it's accessible and very responsible. I have to say the front cover photo is not great in my opinion, looks badly digitised..but hey!

@Chris Carson (Old And In The Way) this doesn't sound factual at all. Are you implying that the stylus is producing so much heat that the grooves are distorted after 1 play through? That's pretty contradictory to the fact that vinyl has a very long shelf life. Please if you have more info let me know, because otherwise I think you're giving people the wrong idea.

@Chris Carson (Old And In The Way) It looks like this has been hogwash for a long time.... you realize how much pressure you would need to get a record to its melting point by friction? and if what you're saying is true, if you left your needle in the runnout it should just burn through to the label? Would your needle be hot to the touch after every listen? I mean you're claiming its get to a temp of 140° at least. If vinyl lost its fidelity that easily they would not still be around... the only thing I could see this to be true with is 78rpm shellacs that require high tracking force. The basic physics are not there.

@Chris Carson (Old And In The Way) why don't you just prove me wrong? I'm stating facts.... from research... what you are stating is completely illogical and against the principles of vinyl
I’ve been a big Coltrane fan my entire life. I have very close to his entire output, including as a side man, and multiple versions of the same recordings on cd and now LP. Crescent is my favorite. I get lost in the music, it transports me to another place. He was certainly killing it with the releases with Duke, Johnny H, Crescent, and ALS. I’m so grateful that Acoustic Sounds is giving his Impulse catalog the full, premium treatment for not premium price. We are also seeing the re-release/repressing of his Prestige titles by QRP/AP, which are beautifully done. I hope someone will do the same for his Atlantic titles. I have the Atlantic mono box, it sounds decent but nowhere near the quality of the Acoustic Sounds issues of his Impulse recordings. I have the 2x45rpm by ORG of two of Trane’s Atlantic titles, they sound great but they’re expensive and hard to find. Someone needs to give the Acoustic Sounds 5-star treatment to Trane’s Atlantic catalog, so as much as possible of Trane’s output will be available and accessible Thank you again for the video!
I agree. I like Crescent a little better than A Love Supreme.
Great review. Is the inside spine of the gatefold torn ??? Wow.
👌👌
At least my second most beloved album of JC. At least!!!
Hi! Was sind denn das für Außenhüllen, mit denen das Gatefold aufgeklappt werden kann? Danke!
"I love that sound" when the jacket broke. lol Brilliant. open them slowly the first time. than u wont get a damage as shown in your video. cheers
do you have any video of yours with analysis of LP atoms for peace - AMOK? if yes, can you share a link? thanks
Michael, I notice a low frequency hum on this LP and Live at the village vanguard. It doesn't impair the listening experience but it is there. Have you notice this on yours as well?
0:58 Seems like this one got an inside seamsplit for you. I think you can just sum the channels if you want a Mono presentation because RVG did this with all the Impulse Tapes Im pretty sure.

Saw that too! I think it happens on camera as he opens it!
Another topic are you going to do a review of the new Bonobo album. Don’t have the vinyl yet but the digital version sounds amazingly
Seems your copy has an inside seam split (made by the record). If you ask for a replacement, please keep us posted on how this works out. Thanks.
I heard that the original mono versions of these Coltrane impulse albums are fold down from stereo. If that's true, that might be a reason why Chat might not look into them. It looks like He has plenty of options for this reissue series and He seems a bit picky when choosing them. At least that was my impression after Mike from The 'In' Groove asked him about reissuing Alice Coltrane tittles. That being said, I have an original mono of "john coltrane quartet plays chim chim cheree" and it sound fantastic.
Please Chad Kassem, bring us "Ascension" and "Om" !! 🙂
Was there even a mono tape?
Hallo Michael, da bist Du ja schon wieder. 😊 Da ich John Coltrane liebe u. zu gerne live Aufnahmen höre, werde ich mir auf deine Empfehlung hin zuerst "Crescent" live zulegen, müssen! 😁 bye, ❤️Heike

BTW, I have a general audiophile jazz LP question. Maybe Michael can answer it or someone else reading here. I recently came across an audiophile jazz reissue series called "From the Original Master Tapes" (also written on the cover) by the Japanese label Disk Union. But I have never seen those LPs let alone listened to them. Does anyone have any practical experience with this series and can tell me something about the sound quality? As these records are very expensive on Discogs (for example Hank Mobley Soul Station - 300 Euros, Grant Green Idle Moments - more than 400 Euros), I would not like to risk a blind purchase.

Hi, I am in Japan and own some from this series. I don't know if you ever came to Japan but Disc Union is the biggest used record seller in Japan since 50 years ago. To give you an idea, the company boasts it has the biggest Beatles collection in the world (Shinjuku Store) When they bear their name on any series it means that the kid gloves are off and they're into serious stuff. The series is limited to Blue Note primarily in the 1500s and utilizes pressing machines actually used for the originals. The series have been overseen by three renowned Japanese critics. The flat edges, deep grooves, the jackets and even the labels are mimicked. The music is sourced from the original mono masters (regardless of fold-down or dedicated mix) and the goal was to recreate how the tape sounds, rather than how the original RVG cuts sound. I have Amazing Bud Powell 1 and 2 and Sonny Rollins A Night at the Village Vanguard. They sound awesome. I also used to own Soul Station/Hank Mobley and Blue Train but sold them back after comparing with the Music Matters same titles. Maybe this is after COVID but I advise to hold back your three digit bucks and come to Japan. DU still sells some of these titles at 50-100 bucks at their outlets in Tokyo.

@@user-bp9gu8vn6x Thank you for this interesting information. Really strange that I had not heard about this series before. Seems there was no European or at least German distributor.
Michael I appreciate your feedback here. I refer to this album as moody. Yes I like it a lot. To those playing your records repeatedly I want to again remind all that Bernie Grundman advises not to play a record more than once in a 24 hour period. ☮️
@antoniojorgesilvestre7783

Why?
@DC-xx4kv
2 жыл бұрын
@@antoniojorgesilvestre7783 because of the heat caused by the friction of the stylus which makes the groove susceptible to wear and degradation if played before the groove can recover fully after the playing of its music.
I bought a lot of Coltrane albums back in the nineties on 20 BIT Compact Disc.....they sound great....orange and black spine /nice packaging...luckily I have an OG BLUE TRAIN vinyl...I find CRESCENT a less enjoyable listen than the two obvious masterworks...though I must admit as much as I love A LOVE SUPREME I really cringe when the album title is vocalised briefly ....by Mr. Coltrane I presume?...they should have got Chet Baker in for that!!.....tee hee
@StylusDrop
2 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as a "20 BIT Compact Disc". CDs can be produced, of course, from 20 bit masters but they are still only 16 bit and there is no advantage in mastering from a 20 bit source rather than 16 bit source for CD. Don't fall for the marketing hype.

So you think Coltrane should have got a trumpet player with his weak delicate voice to sing on A Love Supreme? I can’t think of two jazz artists less alike in spirit - other than their tragic addictions….
@christianrork5060
2 жыл бұрын
I like Trane’s singing, a nice deep voice that seems fitting for the track.
I feel like it’s underrated album by Trane
My copy is not at the top quality wise Too many clicks on side 2. Other people experiencing the same ?
The energetic tenor sax (only) from the left side is annoying !
Why do you always say 'beautiful Stoughton jacket' when they make that awful cracking sound when they open and yours clearly has a split spine inside? Ask any decent bookbinder about these so-called 'beautiful Stoughton jackets' and they will laugh at you. The print quality is good [although the stock is too shiny for my taste] - but the finishing is not good. Thankfully the record sounds great which is the main thing after all.
