John Carpenter's They Live - What's the Difference?

John Carpenter's 1988 cult classic They Live is essential viewing as a middle finger to greed and capitalism run amok and it's as relevant today as it's ever been. The story of Rowdy Roddy Piper's Nada waking up to the subliminal messages that have kept the ruling class in power is pure B-movie brilliance. But how did Carpenter expand Ray Nelson's VERY short story into an 80's sci-fi satire? It's time to ask, What's the Difference?

The fight scene was purposely the longest gnarliest drag out street fight ever filmed. Waking people up is very difficult. They will fight you tooth and nail to remain asleep, safe in the nightmare.

also every time the signal jams and the guy trying to expose, breaks trough on TV everyone gets a headache.. That hit me so hard.. Irl "Sleepers" always seem to get headache as well when you talk about certain stuff. Even when it's just a short simple remark/statement. People over age 40 specifically. They cant stand it.. Once the prism of the mind is fully matured/vested they cant go without..

Exactly! That's what I've been dealing with the past few years. I've been watching a lot of alternative media and am currently reading "The CIA as Organized Crime" by Douglas Valentine, and I feel like I've definitely put on the glasses in a manner of speaking. But getting others to listen is a frustrating experience. When someone tells you she's loved everything Joe Biden has done and nothing I say will change her mind, you realize how relevant that fight scene really is!

This movie has a lot of depth, and the production is quite advanced to its date. I can remember watching this as a kid wondering about things I've never used to think about, then suddenly, my perspective of the world reformed to a new stage of awareness. There is always a hidden message behind a large set.

Nothing is "just" anything; all things work together. Six subsidiaries of giant, multinational corporate conglomerates control over 90% of the news we receive. All of them depend on advertising to survive. Small and mid-sized businesses can't afford the advertising rates of those giants, big banks and big businesses dominate most of the advertising we see. High-level politicians depend on big money, most of it from the aforesaid businesses, to get elected and stay in office. Those same politicians appoint the heads of regulatory agencies, who almost always come from the businesses being regulated, and they also introduce bills, many of which are written by businesses. Thus, the rules governing businesses are written by a relatively few businesses at the expense of the many. The six-headed giant media also need information to stay in business. They get most of it from top politicians, bureaucrats, big business and banks, and intelligence agencies, all of whom have their reasons for furnishing information. There's much more, but I think you get the picture.

It was obviously just supposed to mimic the things we're told to do these days that lack subtlety. We're told everywhere to wear a mask, told everywhere to vote, and nearly ever KZreadr begs their watchers to subscribe. It's propaganda, no two ways about it. I wouldn't necessarily call CineFix anti-science though, just inserting some relevant propaganda within a movie about propaganda. Most of the alien's messages within the movie aren't terrible, and to be sure, worse things have been commanded of people to people in the past. The crime of propaganda, even well-intentioned propaganda, is denying people the ability to choose for themselves and live free lives. If you want the movie's themes to still make sense and not sound like a hypocrite, you have to identify today's propaganda too and point out how they limit people's individual choices, even if it's for the best on a larger scale. I love this movie more with each viewing! I saw this in the theater when it first came out. The six minute fight scene, and the hokey soundtrack were my only complaints. Why didn't the late great Roddy Piper just tell the guy "Dude! Check out these badass sunglasses that someone threw out! You can have a pair if they fit. Try them on!" I apologize to everyone likes that scene, but it REALLY slowed down the pace and the hokey slow music added to that. With those two things changed, it would, in my opinion, be a better film. Don't get my wrong, I still love it and consider it one of the best ever made, but does anyone agree about the points I made?

I kinda felt the exact same way watching it, but upon reflection it's doing a lot of story work and is a multifaceted metaphor for the things that keep the poor and oppressed down. Frank is cynical and knows the system is rigged against him, but he still doesn't want to interrogate it too closely or fight against it because of sunk cost, fear, misdirected anger, etc. etc. It can be a long, exhausting, brutal fight to wake people up out of complacency and despair and the brawl symbolises that. Totally agree with you about the music, though. So plodding and repetitive.

I was thinking the same thing, but from a different point of view. Or to put it this way: Those "at the top" have always wanted, well, wanted it all. They are the "greedy" folks who do indeed run the world. Always have, always will. And those in the middle? They haven't changed all that much, either. They still work, do the best they can, while being taxed, yeah, almost to death, to benefit both those at the top and then those at the bottom. So this is about those "at the bottom". Yeah, for a long time they were quite content to settle for "something for nothing". These days? That's funny. Those "at the bottom" are now demanding that they have the "right" to, well, anything and everything, all that both those in the "middle" and at the "top" have by either their simple power and greed or through the old-fashioned notion of "hard work". Those at the bottom don't care about any of that. They simply want it all! So re-do "They Live" today, here in 2020? You'd have to change the plot only to show that it would be the "poor" people, the "homeless," those in the "inner cities" who would be the ones killing our "heroes" in the sunglasses....

Taking both prospectives through the lenses of a non biased set of They Live glasses, it’s easy to see, that one can watch this movie, and have no doubt, it is referring to all the regular news networks, upper class liberals, and the lives they all seem to follow.
