I cry every time I hear this song. I remember it was playing when one of my closest cousin killed himself. I can't help but remember his cold hands when I saw him in the hospital. This song was playing in his room. . . To this day I can't bring myself to go to his grave without breaking down. Screaming for God to give him back to me. R.I.P Jesse Guyden III, Nov. 13, 1972 - March 14, 2007. "Good night my sweet cousin. May your tears be shed no more."

Humble and happy enough enough to be playing with much lesser schooled performers. He's always been able to master any instrument he touches. Janis was said to have "shortcomings". But what's so fabulous about music and the various colors of the lyrics, musical instruments, expertise of the musicians, and the singers themselves, is the prue enjoyment we consumers can keep on having from the likes of these "shortcoming" technically non-perfect" singers due to the facts of their souls in belting out those words. Sadly, many people just don't know how to enjoy their gifts and miss the whole point of music. 😢

I heard this in 1992, on the Leonard Cohen tribute, I'm Your Fan. The simplicity was what won me over: a man with a weathered voice, accompanied by piano. It was beautiful, poignant, and inimitable. Yes, I have heard several covers, but this is one that I always return to. This video has added more to the song:The tension between creation and destruction; beauty and decay; love and death. A true memento mori, disguised as a hymn for agnostics and heretics. I'm shattered.

In some ways, Leonard Cohen basically told the story of Sampson and Delilah in the form of an Al Green song lol. Obligatory Faith+1 joke? (My bad...South Park has either ruined me or improved me. I am still unsure as to which wave function collapse will occur.) If you think about the song a bit deeper, I suppose it has this structure of mythos and perfection. The notes are perfect, yet the words are human. Also, if you ask some rabbis they will legit say that the origin story in the garden of eden is basically one of the world's first recorded and preserved dirty jokes lol.

I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord. But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this: The fourth, the fifth. The minor fall, the major lift. The baffled king composing Hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah. Your faith was strong but you needed proof. You saw her bathing on the roof. Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you. She tied you to a kitchen chair. She broke your throne, she cut your hair. And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah. Maybe I've been here before. I know this room, I've walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew you. I've seen your flag on the marble arch. Love is not a victory march, It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah. There was a time you'd let me know What's real and going on below. But now you never show it to me, do you? Remember when I moved in you? The Holy Dove was moving too. And every breath we drew was hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah. Maybe there's a God above. And all I ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you. It's not a cry you can hear at night. It's not somebody who's seen the light. It's a cold and its a broken hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelu... Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

Becky81 Yes...and no. This is by far the best reinterpretation of this song, but then you have surely listened to Cale´s fantastic versions of Heartbreak Hotel or Pablo Picasso. Always rearranging the songs and coming up with new versions. Pure genius. And then there are other artists with great covers that sometimes outclass the original versions. On my channel I have a playlist with several covers from various artits doing great versions of other peoples songs. Maybe you want to check it out. kzread.info/head/PLNINWcxxj9hHhXhw5IaBHnwXtEx02zNRU&disable_polymer=true By the way, I suppose we share the same city. If so, then greetings from Icke to Icke.

Love John with that axe chopping up those baby pianos. Reminiscence to the Croyden gig back in 1977 where John Cale beheaded a chicken live on stage and threw the carcass into the audience while performing Elvis Presley´s Heartbreak Hotel. Pogo dancing stopped instantly, and his band who were all vegetarians walked right off the stage ending the tour. Cale later said that it was the most effective show-stopper he ever came up with.

Things you may not have noticed about this song: - It describes the chord progression in the lyrics, "the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift" - Leonard Cohen is describing himself as the baffled king, as he is composing the song - It compares the feeling of love to the practice of prayer - "Love is not a victory march" points out that love is not an end game experience, but a feeling - "All I've ever learned from love Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew you" describes how people get trapped into viewing love as a competition and win con This song predates me, but I first heard it at the end of the movie Basquiat and it just stuck with me. I keep coming back to it.

John is responsible for the stream-lined version of Cohen's masterpiece that has been covered by hundreds of artists... and to me, his rendition is still the best. I first heard it in the movie Shrek and was immediately moved by the song. I can only remember one other time that I had a similar feeling -- when Peter Gabriel's version of "The Book of Love" was played on the Scrubs finale. Great song, great performance.
