I love Led Zeppelin's version of "When the Levee Breaks". The drum intro is pure magic.

It remains one of the most notable and recognizable drum tracks in rock history
FOUR STICKS. Not only what Bonham does, but listen to Jones's bass part during the "chorus". Seriously. Incredible. Timeless.
There will never be another John Bonham, RIP. I’m going to see his son Jason’s band this Thursday and I can’t wait to hear all those old songs of my youth live. Looking forward to seeing the amazing Mr. Jimmy as well. It’s the closest I’ll ever get to seeing Led Zeppelin. Thanks for sharing this.
Nobody's Fault But Mine I just love the heavyness of his playing and the quick stops and perfect spacing of silence in-between massive sounding verses, chorus and lead solo. Bonham was the man!!!!!
Tea For One. The whole band shines on that track. Page can make a guitar seem human . But Bonham's slow groove just makes it spectacular. I've never been able to explain what it is about Bonham's playing that made it unlike anyone else's. It's something like magic.
The Rover is a top pick for me. The band and especially Bonzo is so powerful on the entire thing. But Zep 1 is my favorite album.
Love how he crashes into Your Time Is Gonna Come. ⚘
Thanks, Otis. Hope you're having a great time on your tour. I'm loving your little side trips through rock history for us. My favorite Zep tune is When the Levee Breaks and mostly because of the power of Bonham's drumming on that track.
I can close my eyes and see his kick ass kit - 3 connecting circles on the kick drum, the massive gong, listening to John B on Moby Dick... Radio 8 track in my 76'Vega... 🤘🤘🤘
Otis I love how you're only 20 miles south of Birmingham but yet it feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. England is way more rural than most people would think. My English wife reckons that you can be anywhere in England and never be more than 70 miles from the sea.
I love Moby Dick where he sounds like he's playing 10 drums at the same time and he's only on a five-piece it's really amazing
Mr. Bonham's approach to drumming was so unique and thunderously powerful. Myself and all Drummer's will never forget him. I love every song, but I would have to say that the drum part on the tune No Quarter reveals king John's true genius on the Drum kit. Thanks for the great tribute to the best Rock Drummer ever. Love & God Bless: S.R.PURDY 🥁🙏
Thanks, Otis. I love how big the drums are in When the Levee Breaks.
The drumming Achilles Last Stand is transcendent.
Anyone else remember a story of John lining his drums with aluminum foil? I remember the $10 ticket days, that was a long time ago. Thanks again Otis and thank Andy from all of us. Very cool indeed.
My wife and I have our signatures in the book there. We were in England for a month about 9 years ago,..and had to find his gravesite. It is a really wonderful, peaceful place. RIP John..
Sir you nailed it on your comment about the difference between being a great drummer or guitar player, and being a great musician, they do more than just play, they bring the entire bands sound together, that's something almost impossible to teach. That was Bonham🎼🥁🎶
Thanks for this video. Bonham has always been my all-time favorite drummer. One-of-a-kind drummer, tone, and intensity.
I know what you mean about being "Burned out" on some music. All those great Rock & Roll songs from the early 50's to say 90. And they play the same shit over and over and over.
Dang - you've got me in tears today Otis. Thank you for this. Beautiful.💔💖🌺⚘💫
I remember Black dog playing on radio Christmas Eve. I was 7 y/o jumping up and down dancing to this. Jumped even higher next morning getting zeppelin 4 for Christmas. ❤ peace John Bonham, you inspired me to learn to play drums.🙏🔥❤️✝️
I visited his grave back in 2014 while on tour with my band. Lovley churchyard with a fanastic country side view!
Dancing Days always sticks in my mind. Steve Miller had great drummers also and that made me want to play drums. I got to practice with Paul Riesenberg as stand in for pure Prairie League as a shout out to him.
Miss them days also ,driving those back roads jamming to rock music . just living in the woods as we called it.
Riding in the back seat of my older brothers T-top Camaro through the southern Indiana back roads as a young teen in the 80's. Blasting Zeppelin, AC/DC and all the great rockers. This takes me back. Thanks Otis!
Down by the Seaside…always warms my spirit. Great story telling my friend with a poignant message.
Otis….thank you, thank you, thank you, I’ve always wanted to visit and pay my respects. John Bonham is one of a few who influenced me to start playing drums. I have a lot of favorites but, When The Levee Breaks is my number one. I absolutely love Zeppelin’s spin on Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoys song but most of all Bonhams drums. Long may your drums thunder Bonzo
Kashmir is a awesome song.I enjoyed all of their albums and songs, but I remember getting their first album when it came out and I was hooked on Led Zeppelin. Songs like Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and You're Time is Gonna Come, then the opener on the 2nd album Whole Lotta Love classic rockin Zeppelin.
Kashmir is damn good! D'yer Maker has a great drum intro. One of my favorites in the later Zep catalogue is called Nobody's Fault But Mine, that really shows off Plants vocals. Another Great video from you Otis!! Much love and thanks..

@@bowowski936 Bonham hated Reggae apparently and D'yer Maker was more or less a reggae influenced tune
As a huge fan of the band and the man john bonham, thank you for bringing me out there with you , it was very beautiful and I appreciate the time you took to do it , that is funny about the 10 bucks because some real crappy bands are getting a couple of hundred dollars a ticket now , just two years ago I paid almost 200 to see bob dylan, I wasn't disappointed in the least , small civic center in roanoke va and he was great , well worth it
Thanks for sharing. It's too bad nobody tried to get John Bonham help, like you said. Very cool story of your memories as a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm more of a 2nd generation fan. I grew to love them after Bonham's untimely passing. At 15, one radio station played their entire library from A to Z and I was hooked. Great moments from Bonzo include the jazz chops that begin How Many More Times which become sort of African style percussion in the middle, the 3 minute solo on Moby Dick, which was extended live, the intro on Rock And Roll and the rockabilly shuffle introducing D'yer Maker. Bonzo was a family man, as shown in The Song Rains The Same. All 4 have fantasy sequences and his is by far the most fun! RIP, Bonzo, and thanks for the great music! You were one of 4 geniuses in one amazing band!
Good times bad times, that kick is just too phenomenal. Everything Bonham did was great, really. My buddy, who played the drums and I was on the guitar, did a pretty good version of Rock n Roll. That was our warm up song and it was a real treat when he kind of got it down. Sometimes when you just touch a little bit of something these great players pulled off there's a high that comes with that, I remember my buddy and me being really excited. Looking back it probably wasn't as close as we thought but still, it takes a pretty special musician to touch people in that way. Definitely my favorite rock drummer of all time, I agree with what you said, great feel, space and musicianship. There'll never be another Bonzo!
When the Levee Breaks! Love the slide and drums. Open F.
I'm with you, really burned out on "classic" rock radio and I stay the hell away from it(really hate the repetition of the same 4-6 tracks by bands like Zeppelin and the Who),but now when I listen to albums like Zoso(4) i love so much of what was done by them. And no one can beat Bonham, what a sound(been loving "Achilles Last Stand" recently ,go figure... so many great songs and performances.
Otis brother you’ve hit another home run, thanks!✌️
Thank you otis...so many things you said really touched home with me...I over loaded with zeppelin as a teen in the early 80s and stopped spinning them but i never stopped loving them or calling them my favorite and most influenced by....the thing about zeppelin is that everytime I listen to something different from them it becomes my favorite. Every album i bought took me on a new adventure..i have the 10 original albums....In the light,in my time of dying, the rover, tea for one ,since ive been loving you,ten years gone ,I cant quit you baby (their remake on coda album)All my favorite songs..today when I listen to zeppelin its like eating a fudgcicle, its just so delisicious to my ears and it instantly takes me back to places in my teen years....my favorite john thing is on the song remains the same..johns part driving his hotrod to the corner store to get the mail or whatever was brilliant...R.I.P Mr Bonham...
Another great video Otis. Thanks for sharing your trip to GB. I've always liked Moby Dick, Out on the Tiles, Whole Lotta Love and I think my favorite, Ramble On. Take care and keep the videos coming!
Your Time Is Gonna Come. They have so many great tracks !! I just still remember where I was listening to the first album for the first time, and being blown away by all of what was going on in that song. The whole vibe & then the way it blended into Black Mountain Side on the outro. Geniuses !! Pure Genius
Thank you for the video. Really good. I grew up literally 3 minutes from his house in Birchfield Rd At Rectory Rd. His birth house now has a blue Plaque. I paid £2 for a ticket to the concert in London back in the 70's
I still remember going to the theater to see The Song Remains The Same & watching John run a slingshot dragster down the strip to his Moby Dick solo. There was nothing or nobody cooler
There will never be a drummer like him again, and I love the point you make about his recording technique.
Bonham was truly special, amazing feel and touch....
Bonham’s “Rock n Roll” drum is almost a straight rip of Little Richard’s “Keep A Knockin’”.

It's a homage not a rip off. That's why the song is called Rock and Roll. It is a tribute to 1950's rock n' roll. Pretty bloody obvious.
One of my favorites is 'That's The Way' as I knew the lyrics inside out. One hot summer evening in 2003 Toronto I was outside enjoying a cold beverage when my neighbor (and fellow music lover) flew around the corner, "Dave, Dave, you gotta hear this! I bought a DVD today. Some never before seen Zeppelin. You gotta hear it!" He the day had purchased the 2003 double disc with the red sand and blue sky (you know the one) begging me over to watch the spectacle. Blew my freakin mind! Achilles Last Stand, Immigrant Song in Australia it all put me over the edge and bought a copy the next day, I think it was $30 at the time and worth every penny. Good times and thanks for posting, cheers. Oh yeah, RIP John Bonham, you were the best!
‘How many more times’ the first album I listened to, the last track on that album, just made me want to play the whole thing over & over. Amazing!!!!
Saw them in 77 in Cincinnati the song Since I Been Loving You comes to mind.
Nobody's Fault but Mine. I didn't know it was such an old song until I heard you talk about it. Thanks for making the ride out there.
Ten Years Gone....such a good song to me and I don't know why. It just works.
Bonzo's drumming in When the Levee Breaks. That's all I can say. Other than, love you Otis.
As a 18YO kid…Whole Lotta Love…as a old man it’s changed to Over the Hills and Far Away…searching out John Bonham final resting place to Bill Monroe’s home place…only Otis
Thank you Otis. I envy being 'in the middle of no where'. The ability to record music is an art on to itself and separate. As for an attraction to poison of any sort, it will show no mercy except for its escape...
Thank you, Otis 🙏 Looks like I'm going to be listening to some Bonham/ Led Zeppelin for the next few days... preferably deep cuts. I think my favorite LZ tune is the one I'm listening to in that moment ... Be good to you and travel well 💛
I personally love "trampled under foot".. the live version (or versions) are just amazing.. I love how JOHN and the band just go off in the middle of the song and just jam! Thanks for doing the vid, I hope to someday get there to pay respect.. cheers🤘🙏
Your description of John Bonham‘s playing as a musician is spot on! I’ve always tried to describe his playing and never could really nail it in words but you have, fantastic video!! ♥️🎵👍! 🙏
Not Chuck Berry....check "You Keep A'Knockin" by Little Richard. Great video, love Bonzo!
Thanks for the vid Otis! That was a real treat to get to see John Bonhams grave. "Immigrant Song" is my personal fave. Safe travels Otis!
Listen to Achilles Last Stand LOUD. I could frame a two car garage with less effort and sweat than air drumming to this song! What an f'n BEAST this man was!
My father worked with Led Zeppelin. He's always said that because they were both rural farm kids, they got along really well and Bonzo really just wanted to be at home on his farm.
"Good Times, Bad Times" sold me on Led Zeppelin. That song, plus "Ramble On" and "Fool In The Rain" are my 3 favorites. All very different, but exceptional.
I don't think Bonzo could be described as well as you as a Zephead! You nailed it with what and when he left out. Peace Man👍
Thanks for all of these great videos, very interesting & informative! Enjoy the rest of your tour & safe travels. ❤😎👍
When the Levee Breaks and Kashmir. Two most next level drum sounds ever laid down on tape! Great video!!
I love The Ocean. Always loved that song.
...I believe it was Little Richards’ Keep a Knockin’ that Bonzo was riffing on - in coming up with the R&R intro. Years back I quite didn’t understand the last hit he did before the instruments come in. I’m thinking “1-2-3-1!” Wrong I was! It’s all in four on the floor time. As a bass hack, even I recognized this but it took me some time to figure it. Black Dog too....all 4x4 time. Bonzo was hell-bent on getting it (his overall contribution to LZ,) right. I love him for that. I don’t think I’ll ever stop missing him. It was screwdrivers, that he was drinking...big ones too, on that fateful day. Basically it was the equivalent of an entire 1.75 bottle (give or take) that he took in that day/night. It’s simply too much liquor in a 12hr period and the body is just gonna reject it. I think most people start getting woozy after three gimlets - never mind a half gallon of it.
Thanks, Otis! Great video here. There's something about The Lemon Song that does it for me. But then again, I'm a bass player.
Keith Moon was almost the Led Zeppelin drummer. I can't image what that would have sounded like. It probably would have been great but completely different. I'm glad Moon stayed with The Who. "When The Levee Breaks" and "In My Time of Dying" are what comes to my mind when I think of Bonham.
Great video! Excellent quality, great shots and I love your dialogue… As far as my favorite John Bonham drumming songs, I’ll go deep with: Wanton Song, The Crunge, Out on the Tiles, Achilles Last Stand.
Moby Dick! But he was in the back seat of my GTO and the country roads were in Illinois, I need a tissue now. Thanks Otis.
Thanks for this video, Otis! Love the church cemetery. I stop at them often on my bike rides. I have a memory of cruising around Indy in the late 70s on a double date in the back seat of a yes, Trans Am, with a great sound system listening to Bob Seger's live album. It was amazing! Can't speak to Bonham's drumming specifically, but Over the Hills and Far Away is my favorite LZ song.
I remember shortly after his death it was said he drank 31 screwdrivers before 2 pm that day. That it was not out of the ordinary for him. He laid down on a small couch and was gone a short time later. That's what I remember hearing. A Led Zep attorney I worked with said no, it was more than that.
Great tribute Otis. “Achilles Last Stand”
While maybe not as technically brilliant as Fool In The Rain, In My Time of Dying is one of my favorite Bonham performances. When The Levee Breaks is another all time favorite. I never got to see Zeppelin in person, Bonham died 6 months before I was born. But it was a revelation when I discovered them in my teens. Even though John is laying silently in that grave, he is still impacting and being heard by millions around the world.
D'yer Maker. That snare is magical. The fills are ridiculous.
To many to have one favourite. But' In my time of dying '...is up there
"Down By The Seaside" Great track.
whole lotta love has got to be the ultimate riff...
Since I've been loving you!!!
Ramble on, great percussion from one of the greatest. I saw LZ at MSG
Otis..great little film. This is the upside of bein on the road. Do more vignettes like this. Thanx.
The Wanton Song. A perfect display of the space or air in his playing. Those single strike snare hits just kill me every time
I never listen to Led Z anymore but I think when the levee breaks is a song I would listen to again if it came on the radio. Played rock for so long in cover bands I just cannot listen to classic rock anymore but John B was a monster drummer it was sad to see the shape his tombstone was in but 1980 was 41 years ago. Thanks again Otis for sharing this trip with us I hope you have a great tour. Rick & Roz
Thank you Andy and Otis. Those hills are beautiful. Kashmir.
Heart Breaker, by far my fave Zep Tune!
Great video Otis and lovely words. Hope you're well and it's not too cold for ya :-)
Remember buying the album volume 2 in 1970 . My elder brother bought me tickets for a show in the 70s, some festival I think and I never went. Always regretted that.
Hmm. So many great tunes its hard say. The movie at Madison Square Garden in 73 is awesome. No Quarter and Since I've Been Loving You are the best, but there's a part during Dazed And Confused, 9 minutes in, where Bonzo and JPJ gesture to each other and break into going to San Francisco. That gives me chills. Rip John Henry Bonham !!
I love Cashmir. Your tour is so wonderful.
When the Levee Breaks, so classic
Dude - You and your buddy impacted me in a big way. Your appreciation as a guitarist for a great drummer like Bonzo carries a lot of weight since it comes from outside the 'percussive' community. Your photography and narration are top notch. Bless you, boys. 🤟👍
In the light🥁
Thanks once again, Otis! Another tremendous video, sir. Also I agree if anyone is struggling please get help. You're right Otis. We need those people around and the families need them. That hits home for me. Thanks again!
Otis, I as well wish I could visit that time again. Trans Am on a west Virginia backroad with the music blasting. You and I are the same age. So I get it.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Otis! Now the song "Thank You" is not my favorite Bonham drum track but the live version is awesome. I guess I will go with 4 Sticks, simply brilliant.
The drum intro for 'Rock and Roll' was a nice count to come in when I was playing my les paul back in my bar band days..not too many drummers could get it right. but then again I was trying to dial in Jimmy Page and falling short of the mark too. Great insight into being a well rounded musician mixing yourself and being intuitive and leaving space. great episode. May the road rise to meet you Otis.
Looks like you’re getting good weather. So beautiful there. A fitting resting place for one of the greatest drummers ever. Loved his sound and like you said his space. I’m not sure I can find one fave. But Bring It All Home. Tangerine. Whole Lotta Love. Going to California. When the levee. How Many More Times. Have to be in the mix. Thanks for sharing this was appreciated. Looking good Otis
I get that same cyclical thing with classic rock myself. But every few months (even years!) when I play my teenage favourites from the 60s/70s again, it's a real high! Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Stones, Hawkwind, Love... their best all sounds so well recorded. Some magical confluence of musical talent, personnel, sound engineering, equipment, social environment... all combined in a serendipitous way that is impossible to conjure up at will. And thanks, Otis, and Andy, for a great evening at the Thimblemill Library last Saturday. It was very much appreciated! Oh, and apart from all the well known Bonham-laden tracks, what about that funky off-beat on "Boogie With Stu"? Groovy. Love it. And the drum/bass crashing in on "Nobody's Fault But Mine" always sends chills down my spine. "Bonzo's Montreux" is pretty great too.
"Thank you Otis" Great Job! (No Quarter) 1970's Driving in the rain. 8 track cranked up Max. Every song had to be good in those daze!
The first bar band I was in had a great drummer, George S !!! Rock and roll was the first song I ever sang on stage! Are drummer Nailed it ✌️😎
First zep song I heard was rock and roll great song great episode thanks Ottis
Led Zepplin played outside Seattle in a suburb named, Woodinville. It is so small it blows my mind. I never had the pleasure to see the band, except on the, Song Remains the Same movie.
