See what happens over time…it’s not who you work for ( which at the beginning is everyone ) but after you’ve truly worked for everyone, that gives you the right to say that you work for yourself.

Guthrie says: "There's a shelf life for a gig no matter how great it is and you're going to start kinda getting burned out." Luke McQueary at Roberts with Kelly's Heroes is at this point. He needs to move on. You can see it so clearly in the way he looks, the way he stands, the interactions on stage. They're looking past each other, miming what used to be real. He's done. Someone should snap him up and get him to the next level of his career.

Blue angel music is a bad ass music store. I’m from Mobile and a guitarist . I played in bands in the 90’s and 00’s i remember seeing Guthrie in passing. Some people are just destined for greatness and I could tell then that Guthrie was going to the top.

Guthrie is sharing some really great insight here and I want to make sure this doesn't fall through the cracks. When he was looking for a break, he moved to a city with more opportunities. Once he got there, he went out almost every single night and hung out at the place where things were happening. When he finally got an opportunity, he was able to take full advantage of it because he'd worked his ass off for years honing his craft. Some folks will call that a lucky break, but that discounts the effort and sacrifice that went into it. As you can probably tell, I really enjoyed this story. I hope you did too. ❤ You should subscribe to Guthrie's channel and tell him Otis sent ya! www.youtube.com/@guthrietrappmusic

Great interview, Otis. I love how you just guide things along at times, but let Charlie tell the stories. I got to meet Duane Betts as well as Pedro Arevallo when they played small venues in socal. Both are just the nicest and most humble guys you'd ever have the pleasure of meeting. Met Dickey, too, and he was as gracious as the day is long.

A visit to this house is now on my bucket list! The first time I heard Statesboro Blues off the At Fillmore East album, as an aspiring 15 year old guitarist, down in Cape Town South Africa, my home town, back in '72, once the album made it down here, I was absolutely enthralled by the sound. Not having heard much slide guitar before, I played that album night and day for months to try and figure out what this guy called Duane was doin. It took a lifetime to figure it, which I eventually did, by watching KZread videos of Warren Haynes performing it with the reformed Allman band in the 90's. Information was scare down here during the 1970's, a lot of it was banned and censored, and albums with non-white members were banned outright. But there was a clandestine pipeiline of US albums making their way down to South Africa, and we shared these albums. What a band, with a rich and tragic history that played out in the racially divided south, not unlike the racially divided country I grew up in.

It’s a different time indeed, and I'm an older guy, so I’ll take the guitar that inspired Jeff Beck (Les Paul’s Les Paul/How High the Moon) over the guitar that inspired countless later rockers (Kurt Cobain’s Mustang/Smells Like Teen Spirit) any day. That’s not a slight to Kurt, it’s just my age showing.
