John Bolton on Iran, North Korea and 'accountability' for US wars | Talk to Al Jazeera

John Bolton is one of the most divisive figures in American politics today.
To some, he is Washington's most famous warmonger. To others, a fearless defender of US interests.
From Iraq to Iran, Syria to North Korea, his decades of conservative foreign policy have influenced the position and actions of the US in conflicts worldwide.
Since first serving under President Ronald Reagan's administration in the 1980s, Bolton built a career as a solid, conservative Republican politician.
He was assistant secretary of state for international organisation affairs when President George HW Bush was in the White House, and was under-secretary of state for arms control and international security as well as ambassador to the UN for President George W Bush.
Most recently, he was national security adviser to President Donald Trump. But their working relationship ended in acrimony and accusations after 17 months.
Trump tweeted that Bolton's services were no longer needed in the White House, while Bolton insisted he had quit. His recent book - The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir - caused controversy as Bolton portrays a president driven only by his desire for re-election.
On this interview, we go beyond this latest well-covered controversy to explore what was the truth of his policy advice and positions and whether he has any regrets.
Did he really encourage the Trump administration to "take on the whole world at the same time", as President Trump stated? Or was he just misunderstood?
We find out as John Bolton talks to Al Jazeera.

He was seldom allowed to respond to any question without interruption by the interviewer who sounded like a lawyer doing a cross-examination. There was wide dissent about Iraq possessing WMD. Many Labour members of the British Parliament said so in debates, and I watched them. There were others, and there were other countries. Their opposition can be summed up in what Glenda Jackson, MP, said on the floor of the House of Commons that given to extent Iraq had been monitored from the earlier war under George HW Bush, the manufacture and possession of WMD was "impossible." That was Jackson's words. Impossible.

When showing Bolton via. video conference, the background colors continually shift. Regardless of whether it is a transmission or presentation error, Al Jazeera should have ability to 'stabilize' the static background. This is not unique to the Bolton interview. I've seen this in multiple Al Jazeera interviews of others via video conferencing.

The interviewer demonstrates an utter lack of respect and civility toward the Ambassador by deliberately interrupting his answers. It seems to me that the interviewer's intent here was not to ask questions and hear Mr. Bolton's response but to attack and belittle him by not allowing him to finish his answers. Ambassador Bolton should have discontinued this interview not long after it started.

You obviously failed to notice that John kept dodging the questions, so the interviewer was trying to keep him on track. Anyone with a basic understanding of the history of Iraq and Iran in the last few decades understands the lies that created the 2nd Iraq War. I guess you wanted John to walk away from the interview because you're the type of person that can't take criticism; neither can John. There were many times during the interview when the Ambassador "was" addressing the interviewer's questions but was interrupted, not to be able to finish his answers. And by the way what is the basis on which you or the interviewer believes that Mr. Bolton dodged the questions? Wasn't that an arbitrary judgment on your or the interviewer's part? Even if the Ambassador was not addressing the questions, which I believe he was, this is not the way you should treat your interviewee on your show, is it? In particular when he's the former National Security Advisor and former US ambassador to the UN who did his best to advance American interest around the world.

@@andrewryan660 And to enlighten you my friend, though Iraq may not have had physical pieces of equipment Sadam had nuclear scientists and technicians who had the capability to re-create those nuclear weapons and other WMDs. So Iraq could always return to its nuclear weapons program given the technology it had to develop WMDs. Perhaps more importantly however, prior to the war, Iraq posed a grave threat to international peace and security, functioning effectively as a base of operations from which the terrorists carried out attacks around the world. After the Iraq war the country ceased to be a threat, and the world has become a safer place with Sadam out of power.
