I'm only now into the second part of this Requiem performance, and I've read some comments already. But I must repeat what I've said before about similar performances posted on this medium (NDR, HR, WDR): I'm again very favorably impressed with the entire talent spectrum represented here. These radio orchestras and choruses need not take any back seat to the other world-famous orchestras (New York, Berlin, Vienna, London, Los Angeles, name them). On another front, one observer on this medium objected to the camera work to a degree; for my part, I've lived in Germany over half-a-century, but I've never been in Dresden and have never seen the Frauenkirche; I'm exceeding grateful for the ceiling shots, especially from the top to the bottom. That must be a spectacular artistic and architectural monument to visit in person, and seeing it in this video as I do is as good a consolation prize as I'm liable to get for the foreseeable future. Now the third part is in progress, and I'm equally impressed with the baritone soloist, whom I otherwise don't know. Finally, this piece itself has always been a favorite of mine since the family hearth, and now it'll always remain in my heart in memory of my dearly-departed wife, and I simply cannot hear it enough. In a word: Many thanks! JAT

Quite apart from my enjoyment of this performance, I am struck by how incredibly BEAUTIFUL Dresden's Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) is. This is a Lutheran church, and I needed to be disencumbered of my mistaken belief that Germany's aesthetically significant sacred spaces are all Catholic cathedrals. If an evening of great music-making in a place like this simply requires getting on a plane to Dresden, then it's clearly an overdue experience for this fan of choral oratorios. Another mistake I must admit: When I saw the overhead shot of the chorus and orchestra I thought, "Oh, there aren't enough singers, they'll get drowned out." Well, either this chorus is astonishingly well-focused, or Maestro Joost worked out all the balance issues ahead of time - probably both are true! I will admit, the 4th and 6th movements go faster than I expected, but I also feel that Brahms doesn't always need Brucknerian heaviness to make its point, and I really liked parts of J.E. Gardiner's similarly lean reading. Both soloists are very fine, and it's a pleasure to hear young solo voices in these roles for a change. From Washington DC USA, great, GREAT thanks for posting this video on KZread!

The old versions, like Karajan's, are far too slow, an not very dynamic.

This is an outstanding performance. Such a detailed reading where every phrase is shaped exquisitely and so much orchestral color and detail is revealed (and indeed, so much choral detail as well.) Yes, some of the tempi are on the fast side (this gets the conductor into a bit of trouble at "die loben dich immerdar" around 37:20) but they are exciting.

Uma interpretação magnífica, que nada deve à que Bruno Walter realizou à frente da Filarmônica de Nova York.

Superb performance by both the Orchestra and Chorus, and I enjoyed the bariton soloist. The camera work was annoying and frustrating. The camera was constantly moving, which is often what crews use for an audience with a short attention span. Except for staying on the conductor for maybe 10 seconds at a time, the camera was constantly swirling around the parish and the ceiling nonstop. One got a sense of being sea sick. A classical music audience does not have a short attention span where they/we need constant "scene" changes such as showing a violinist for 2 seconds and then a soprano chorister for 3 seconds and then back to the ceiling for 15 seconds. A longer time spent on the musicians of the Orchestra and of the Chorus would have been far better. It's a beautiful parish but we don't need to see the ceiling countless times. Once or twice is sufficient. There must be a rule written somewhere that whenever recording in a parish or cathedral church, camera crews must frequently show the ceiling because this is not the first instance of this I've seen in performances. But very much appreciate MDR Klassik for making their performances available. Danke.

Stunning performance, other than number four being much too hurried! My main question is, however, how is the audience able to sit appearing so bored and uninterested?

The microphone placement directly above the French horns is unfortunate -- they overbalance in places.

Can people in charge of the videography please refrain from moving the camera as part of the music? Basically, Brahms doesn't need enhancement. Pop music does, but this music stands on its own. Variety of shots, of course. Air dancing and swooping the camera, no. Thank you.
