Semyon Bychkov has very intense eyes. He communicates well with his orchestra. I like his conducting.

True. But I'd rather see more of the orchestra / choir and less of him

The next performance of this work by the WDR Orchestra should be dedicated to iconic soprano Patricia Janeckova, who died of cancer last year.

Yesterday evening, I posted a rather lengthy, appreciative review of the "wie lieblich" movement of this requiem. After that, I listened to the entire piece while going to sleep. It was a wonderful sleep aid: warm, rich, and comforting. Many years ago, after my father died, I listened to it so many times that it has burned itself into my memory. (I actually sang the entire piece without a score at an alumni/ae sight-singing, to the surprise of the kindly alto standing next to me.) This fine performance does justice to the heavenly music. It's a special treat to hear it sung by a German choir (or in this case two German choirs): no pronunciation anomalies. Finally, my appreciation goes to the lovely orchestra, the soloists, the conductor, and the rehearsal conductor. Vielen Dank!!

Wunderbare Aufnahme! ❤❤❤

I cannot, and never could, hear this piece enough...but never more than now. I've performed it countless times, once in Portugal in the presence of my dearly departed mother...and in 2021 one day before the second anniversary of my wife's ultimate departure. It can hardly be done anything but well, and this WDR performance lives up easily to the high standards necessary to do this piece justice, technically AND emotionally. Many, MANY thanks for resurrecting it. JAT

In my 31 years of choral singing, the highlight was when I sang "Ein deutsches Requiem:" - in German - with the Maryland Choral Society under Dr. Samuel Gordon sometime in the mid '80s. A great work by a great composer. Johannes Brahms.

C'mon! Do any of you know of the genius of Brahms to compose what is known as a German double fugue on the words,"Der Gerechten Seelen sind in Gottes Hand und keine Qual ruhret sie an." For those of the unitiated, or the fricking clueless, that is a fugue with 2 fugues going on simultaneously! One fugue in the orchestra and the another in the chorus at the same time! So, please don 't give me this touchy-feely nonsense about the conductor's eyes I mean, are we back in the 60s?

That double fugue is one of the most wonderful parts to sing. I was in a performance of this while in college and the impact of this music has stayed with me to this day. I love Brahms used the words "Tod, wo ist dein Stachel? Hölle, wo ist dein Sieg?O(death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?") turned into a waltz and it worked. The man was truly a genius.

@@jerrera45 same, I sang this in college choir with a German conductor who also acted as our baritone soloist back in 2014. I was a bass, stuck with me since and will for the rest of my life. One of the greatest pieces of music I have ever heard.
