i wish so much that they made it more clear in the show about how joel felt in the game... the world was too far gone and the cure would most likely not work

I think episode 4 summed up how he felt about the world. Joel's motivation was to keep going for family and it didn't matter to him about the state of the world. As long as he had his slice of heaven, he didn't care if everyone else was plunged into hell.
