Joe Rogan and Louis CK talk about the comedy scene in general and how a lot of comedians can be very selfish people who are full of themselves.

Joe is talking about the _Theory of the Limited Good_ -- what he calls the famine mentality. I remember thinking kind of like that when I was in my teens. It leads to resentment of anyone's and everyone's success. I knew a guy years ago -- a real black pit of a human being, a dark narcissist -- and I could tell he was one of those. He hated me because _he_ wanted to be "the intelligent one', and thought I was robbing him by being smart. This was late to my feed. Anyhoo, I wonder how many comedians were either nominated for placement OR placed in the 'Gifted and Talented Program' in their school district? Skill levels such as verbal language usage, reading and creative writing aptitude are tested at an extremely early age. That's when they find out how gifted they truly are in creative writing. If it's not creative writing, then it's more like sales, acting, public relations, communication skills, etc.
“Comedians are NARCISSISTS” As soon as I read that my first thought was Joe Piscopo.
Its hard not to become narcissistic when you are a guy like Rogan
I grew up in Rockland County, but had moved to Jersey by then. Wish I had checked out the comedy scene in Rockland. I actually thought about opening a comedy club/comic book store as I owned a comic book store at the time in Nyack but the deal didn’t go through to buy the corner building with the bar on the first floor. I also missed out on the chance to see Twisted Sister perform at a dive on route 59 in Nanuet, because I only knew them from their posters and they were a little too weird looking for me. My loss. Always great when the two of you, Joe and Louis are together on this podcast. I always learn a lot. This is like taking college classes in Comedy. Comedy 101 and beyond. Thank you. No one should be judged by past mistakes if they are willing to move past them and strive to be better people. Much respect for both of you.
LCK is impressively articulate.
I've been an actor for 10 years, but I have a different respect for comedians and their art. It takes a different kind of stones to get up there by yourself in such a raw way and do what they do, which I most certainly couldn't! That's likely why they're mostly narcissists, like most artists, because that's the kind of people who can actually do what's required.

About those timing laughs, it can be reversed as well. Way back when I was starting out, I came up with what I thought was a "clever" premise for a joke, but not a particularly funny one. It was about how the Catholic Church honors saints on the days they died, instead of their birthdays (because martyrdom) and call it a "feast" of that saint ("feast" here meaning "festival"), and my idea was that the only ones who "feast" when a Christian becomes a martyr are the lions. The trouble was, even though I thought the concept was clever, I couldn't figure out a way to make it funny. Then it hit me. If I tell the joke in a way that I know is going to bomb, and then have a much better follow-up joke about the fact that my joke bombed, I can get a laugh and still have used the clever premise. So I deliberately changed up my speech rhythm so that it WOULDN'T trigger a laugh response, but with just enough of a pause that the audience would realize a split second later that there was supposed to be a laugh, and then, hit them with the REAL punch line. And it worked like a charm! Me: "The Catholic Church celebrates something called 'feast days,' honoring the day that a Catholic saint died. A Catholic dies and they call it a 'feast?' Yeah, for the lions!" (Audience is awkwardly silent.) Me: "Too soon?" (HUGE laugh from the audience!)
