Marvellous. Pity the camera producer kept concentrating on Joe so much as we missed so much NHOP fingering.

Great line by Joe at 7:35 when he starts in with the triplets. Notice how he keeps the same rhythmic contour over the course of the whole phrase. He doesn’t interrupt the idea, maintaining a rhythmic evenness and letting the voice leading catch the attention. At the same time, that rhythmic evenness IS exciting PRECISELY because it’s so even. By deciding not to deviate from the phrasing, Joe sets himself up for what would be certain disaster in the hands of lesser musicians. But because he knows harmony so well, Joe works creatively within the rhythmic limits he’s set for himself. This is great jazz improvising.

My fatal mistake as a self-taught guitarist was never developing my left pinky in single-line playing. It will limit me for life.

Wes Montgomery, George Benson play mostly using three fingers, not a fixed rule, of course they can use pinky too. Django played with two fingers ! And it's never too late too use your pinky. Do not limit yourself for life by trapping yourself...

@@chrisbatson3402 haha, I get what you mean, but nah. Bird keeps more space in his solos, and doesnt shred over minors like Martino likes to. Coltrane doesn't really stop playing, ever, so he's the closest you'd get to Pat Martino in terms of sax players
