Музыка

Joe Jackson and band perform Real Men on Laughter and Lust tour. Pianist Ed Roynesdal takes violin, Guitarist Tom Telley takes Piano, multi-instrumentalist Mindy Jostyn also on violin. Great version.

I have read in many comments on the videos of the Great JJ (that's what I call him) that he is one of the most underrated musicians. Why is that? In the 80s and 90s radio stations dictated the laws of promotion. The internet came to democratise and put everyone on an equal footing. Joe Jackson was outlawed on the radio. He was always too unpredictable and gifted for the insecure disc-jockeys. His overly caustic lyrics put many broadcasters at a distance. Such is the life of a genius. Perhaps in 20 years, a new vintage wave will do justice to this tremendous musician.

@@aussienikogreek I would venture to say that overall we were better off when I was growing up. In the 60's and 70's. Back when the current technology was AM FM radio and early television. I'm not sure that the current technology of today is "better". But it certainly is more controlling. I defy you to name me 1 person who isn't walking around with a phone in his pocket. I don't necessarily know that it's better.

Always an extremely popular song here in Oz. Many of the painful macho ideas still very evident here but it's getting better at last.

I was at this show and the reason it is played a bit fast is because at the end of the first take some bloke jumped up out of the audience and gave Joe a hug. He lost it big time, insisting that security eject him and that they would have to do the song again as he didn't want him in his f***ing video, the rest of the band was understandably embarrassed and the rest of the show was lacking in atmosphere and played at a raised tempo. He should have just laughed it off and got on with it!

It was still a good gig, but you're right in asking about if he'd loosened up a bit. I'm sure it would have made a difference but who can say whether it would be for the good....You know what artists are like....lol

I was at a Who cocert with Joe Jackson opening up. Just Joe and a piano singing this number. Joe walked off mid-song after some impatient person lobbed a hotdog ( with ketchup ) right to his bald head. Pete Townshend made an early appearance coming out immediately to give someone a good tongue lashing. He said ' hey, where's the f-er that threw that? Somebody jump 'em and give em a good kickin. There's more than enough here to do the job. If that person's not gone when we get back, we're not playin!' I don't know what happened to the guy in the crowd. I saw some kind of scuffle but couldn't make it out. I was up in the higher seat stands holding onto the belt of the drunk guy next to me who was verging on falling over the railing about to fall twenty feet straight down. Good concert.

Simon, thanks heaps for this comment - this does add some insight, although I still love this version. I guess the incident also kept the crowd from dancing as they should have??? I saw the Melbourne version of the show, and it was musically brilliant but there was no encore (and hence a short show, the same length as the Sydney video) - I wonder if something had annoyed Joe on that night in Melbourne too. Would he be the same artist if he had loosened up a little?

Irony never works in Rock'n'roll. ( ' Money for nothing ', ' Short people '. Hey I know it's not real irony anyway but the true meaning got compeletly abused by Alanis Morrisette years ago. Only Irish playwrights understand irony, or so I've heard. BTW Samuel Beckett used to drive Andre the giant to school. True ). This however is still a great song. Always liked it and never undertsood it as well as I do right now hearing it again.
