There are rare cinematic treasures that capture rock legends in both their early days and at the pinnacle of their careers. In the era before DVDs flooded the market, offerings were scarce, limited to promotional videos, concert clips, and recorded performances. Surprisingly, it was television, often criticized for its shallowness, that illuminated these remarkable moments, with WDR's "Rockpalast" leading the way. Alongside the BBC's "Old Grey Whistle Test," this series from the 1970s provided a platform for contemporary artists-some now forgotten, others obscure, and a few indelibly legendary.
One of these enduring legends is JOE JACKSON, a prolific and versatile artist. His musical journey began long before his 1979 debut album, "Look Sharp!" graced the airwaves. In his retrospective book, "A Cure for Gravity," we learn of JACKSON's early days, traveling with his band throughout England, playing David Bowie tunes in indifferent pubs. With the changing tides of glam and punk, JACKSON's moment arrived. In just a matter of days, he penned a dozen songs for his trio, adopting the snarky attitude of New Wave mavericks and feeding the press with slogans like "I hate the crappy trees." The album's back cover showcased a skinny rebel in a pinstripe suit, a childlike face contrasting with receding hairline. His songs explored the falsehoods of love, Sunday papers, couples, and fashion, all delivered with a cynical edge. Hits like "Sunday Papers," "One More Time," "Fools in Love," and "Is She Really Going out with Him?" found a special place in the hearts of listeners. However, JACKSON's musical journey was far from linear, branching into symphonies and orchestral compositions, distancing himself from his earlier rebellious songs. Still, his indomitable spirit and talent as a musician continued to shine through, marking him as a true student of style who dared to step beyond the boundaries of rock music.

I'm a huge Joe Jackson fan. He's a musical genius. And Graham Maby is a criminally underrated bassist. He's in the same league as Entwistle, Geddy, Squire and the rest.

Graham seems to be Joe's right-hand man like Daryl Sturmer was to Phil Collins. graham has been the one (mostly) constant in Joe's many, many bands. the only two tours I can think of off the top of my head Graham wasn't on was the 'Big World' Tour in 1986 (which I saw at radio City Music Hall) and the Duke Ellington tour. I'm sure there's others, but those are the two I can think of.

@@stephanemignot100 Yeah, I know that feeling. I've seen some amazing shows that I might have missed... Talking Heads, Clash, Ramones, Specials, David Gilmour, etc. I'm sorry I didn't catch Jackson on this tour. He played close to where I live and I know people who went. Should've gone.

My favorite teenager band. Joe Jackson was the alternative to traditional hard rock that I usually listened to. The band was unique in their sound and styles as a band touching onto many . Even Jazz.
Joe Jackson & Elvis Costello and the Attractions. Born in the late 50's, growing up with the beatles, the kinks and the who and some kind of black soul, stepping out in the punk rock explosion, but to experienced in playing their instruments, they were not trendy enough, to accept the boring playbacks in some british saturday evening shows. It's all about live performance s. And those are killers!!! Best backing bands ever, emotions, soul and entertainment, caught in some of the best stage experiences ever. God bless the U. K...

I'm a bit younger but yeah, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson were great alternatives to the hard rock. When the were current I liked them, didn't love them, but I think they're both great and underappreciated artists.

Yes. I know.
What impresses me about his live performances is the.... musicality... of his presence. He's not just a singer, not just a piano player, not just a saxophonist, he's a band leader. He'd have been just as successful if he'd been born 50 years earlier.

So glad this popped up in my feed. This was excellent. I didn't realize he had so many albums after "Body and Soul. I kind of checked out around that time. There are about 15 more records that he made. I'm going down that rabbit hole next. Thanks Mig Music for reminding me how high level musician/artist Joe really truly is. 🔥
Über 40 Jahre hinweg bin ich glücklich, dass Joe Jackson's Musik mich begleitet...❤
Joe Jackson, Hall & Oats, Steely Dan, Manhattan Transfer, Talking Heads some of the best performances I've seen live. Joe is right there.
He is by far the most versatile, limitless and unpredictable British musician of all time, probably along with Paul McCartney! From punk to classical he has the less boring discography of any artist I can think of.
In 1983 I lived in Highdelberg, Joe blew our minds (and the TV) with this outstanding performance !!!

Ooooh, I'm envious :)
Got introduced to Joe Jackson as a freshman in college in ‘81. Grew up on Zeppelin, Rush, Genesis, Stones so this was very different for me. He and his band are some of the most gifted around. Even today they hit it out of the park.
Such a vocal range, stage presence, superb composition, brassy and bold, sassy, brilliant and raw!
Gosh the crowd are really digging it - absolutely marvellous - Joe Jackson was one of my favourite artists back in my student days - Great music stays with you forever....
Un des artistes de mes 20 ans, splendide.
I met him on the street once in NYC. 1982 OR 1983 . I stopped him and asked for his autograph . He kinda gave me a weird look and the autograph says "Joe Jackson...OK?" . I still have it.

I was at the Ritz one time. I forgot to see what what band it was. But anyway, Joe Jackson was in the audience and it was hardly anybody there and it was a girl taking a picture of him. He shoved that camera in her face. Nice guy !!!!!!!

Une pépite 🎉 thank you MIG Music for adding this awesome live concert on KZread. Was lucky to attend multiple concerts of Joe in the late 80’s early 90’s. What a genius between pop, rock, jazz and so much inspiration.
Joe is sooooo great!!! Very unique!!!!
Great show! Big World has to be my favorite live album of all time! He always has outstanding players! Amazing!!!
A Diamond in the Musical Rough! I followed Joe Jackson from when he was playing Small Venues!!
WOW. WOW, WOW, WOW!
Oh what a joy! I‘ve seen them live performing this tour in ´83. So energetic and rough. So brillant, authentic and unique! It really blew me away! ❤

He's the man ! Grossartiger Künstler, großartige Band. Liebe ihn seit Anfang der 80iger. 🌟🎵🎶❤️🎶🎵🌟
One of the things I admire about the music business in England is that they are open to more than what is the "happening" thing at the moment and can step out of the imagined idea of what a musician should look like. Joe Jackson was never going to be a poster boy, but here in Canada labels seem too interested in the "look" or what the current musical direction is, instead of focusing on signing brilliance. England has such influence because they sign brilliance like Bowie even though it might not seem like the "moment". And they allow Joe to do his thing. Okay, perhaps we'd rather hear the original "Is She Really Going Out With Him." But, this version blows my mind. So maybe I'd rather have them do BOTH versions; maybe the original at the end of the show! Or maybe three versions. WOW. What a talent.

Outstanding casual concert discovery. Joe Jackson live? How bad can it be? I thought. Well it is not often you see a singer go trough three instruments on stage, and the marimba was a complete surprise. Had the LP I'm the Man in the collection back in the day.

My god. Slow Song. How did HE do that. Gorgeous

This is consumate musicianship.
I never like when Joe goes into some alternate rendition of the classics, as the a capella "Is She Really Going Out with Him?"
A little correction to the lineup: the bassist is Graham Maby, not Maybe.

Graham Maybe is the driver on these songs. I'm the man and look sharp are both killer.
