Joe Frazier 🇺🇸vs.🇨🇦 George Chuvalo | JOE TOOK A PIECE OF GEORGIE BOY |

Joe Frazier beat George Chuvalo by TKO at 0:16 in round 4 of 10
Date: 1967-07-19
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
Referee: Johnny Colan
Judge: Tony Castellano
Judge: Artie Aidala
Frazier was an 11 to 5 betting favorite.
Frazier opened a cut under Chuvalo's right eye. Mark Kram of Sports Illustrated reported: "The cut was shaped like a scimitar and it went to the bone (later it was discovered that the bone was broken, requiring surgery), and the eye, seemingly ready to burst, was just a slit. There was another cut on the outside of his left eye, and a gash on the top of his scalp."
Mark Kram further reported: "The fight was supposed to be a war, but it never had time to develop. By the second round, Chuvalo's face was smeared with blood as hook after hook banged into the right side of his rocklike head. Between the second and third rounds, the face turned purple. The third was Chuvalo's best round, but still he did not win it. ... Chuvalo's right eye was closed when he came out for the fourth and, as he said later, he was dizzy. Two heavy hooks by Frazier ended the fight after 16 seconds, Chuvalo turning his back on Frazier and groping for his corner. A blood vessel leading to his eyelid had erupted. 'I thought my eyeball had been knocked out.' said Chuvalo."
Chuvalo later said his right eye was injured when he fought Archie Ray on June 22, 1967. Chuvalo said Ray's head accidentally collided into his cheek bone. "My eye was swelling up, and I went back into the gym and started sparring too soon, and my eye kept blowing up in the gym," Chuvalo explained. "So when I fought Joe, I was damaged goods."

This is a prime example of why Smoking Joe was the greatest pressure fighter and body puncher in heavyweight history. Frazier had faster hands/feet and was 20 pounds heavier than Marciano, he fought far better competition than Dempsey, and he had better stamina, he was busier, and he was much tougher/bigger heart than Tyson. IMO, there is little chance that Marciano, Dempsey, and/or Tyson could have duplicated Frazier's incredible performance against Ali in their 1st fight. Frazier literally gave his heart and soul in that fight, and he was never the same again. The Frazier who fought Daniels, Stander, and Foreman was a shell of the fighter who steamrolled Chuvalo, Mathis, Quarry, Ramos, Foster, and Ellis.

Not many realize Chuvalo had a good knockout record if he caught Frazier things could have easily changed . Fraser was not the same as with Daniels, Stander and Foreman because he allowed his conditioning and endurance to waver. He started to be heavier which affected his overall speed. If you want to see what would’ve happened to Foreman of he faces a real Fraser at his prime, look at his fight with Manuel Ramos

  • @pjtheory

    @pjtheory

    3 жыл бұрын

@@clevelandwilliams5922 The 15 round war with Ali coupled with spending 2 weeks in the hospital were the main reasons why he could never fully regain his former conditioning and skill set. For the remainder of his career, Frazier was 10-12 pounds heavier than he was for his 1st fight with Ali, and he only used his right hand on a sporadic basis. I agree that the Frazier who defeated the 245 pound Buster Mathis, and big heavyweights such as Ramos, Chuvalo, and Bonavena would have defeated a prime Foreman. Heck, if Ron Lyle could knock Foreman all over the ring, imagine what a prime Joe Frazier would do to him.

@NOYB MAXX Joe was easy to hit with a body shot, as he always came forward. Best place to hit Joe and bring him down was to aim uppercut at his upper chest as Joe was often bending down forward bringing down his chin. Joe could never win toe to toe against heavy puncher like Foreman with his normal style of boxing, he employed wrong tactics in both his fights, he should have let foreman chase him making his punches less potent, then counter attacked with his devastating left hook. Too late now,

“This Joe was so much better than the Joe that for Ali and Foreman” are you insane? Joe Frazier fought 37 fights in his entire career. He was 17-0 when he beat Chuvalo. He was 24-0 when he beat Ali after almost a 4 year absence. Come on, be sensible. Everyone beat Chuvalo, Bonavena, Quarry, Jimmy Ellis. But face it, he didnt beat the big ones. Foreman of 1973 would have killed the Frazier of 1965. It was just no contest. Joe had one style. Ali adjusted. Joe kept coming forward and that is a style that is destined to be crushed someone like George foreman.

Chuvalo never went down in these fights or any other of his 93 pro bouts, including two fights with Ali which went the distance. He had a 69% knockout ratio in the pros, and won all 16 of his amateur bouts by K.O.. I can't think of many boxers who fought legends like he did, who were never knocked down.

From what I heard, The fight was stopped because Chavalo eye was partially knocked out of the eye socket . The eyeball is connected by nerve endings, tendons and ligaments so its not as if the eyeball flys out and is detached from the brain and skull. Although that sort of injury could and can happen in car accidents and the like, but not in this fight . But it was a serious injury Chavalo suffered . He was lucky to have a fine eye surgeon. thankfully Chuvalo recovered full sight in that eye

I think the same when he fought Foreman too. Chuvalo could take a lot of punishment, but if he continued to get bludgeoned by Frazier or Foreman, he would have definitely went down. Either that, or he would sustain potentially life threatening injuries.

Great fight between two of the sports toughest from the HW 'golden era' but contrary to the 'words' of the announcer (was this part dubbed for some reason?) this was not a world championship fight. Frazier did not win the vacant title against Ellis until 1969. Nevertheless, Chuvalo did previously challenge Ali (1966) and Terrell (1965) for the title.

Stander staggered him with the left hook that wouldn't bother them before you got to remember the hospital for a couple of weeks after the fight with Ali he was just never the same to me a great champion a champions, champion what incredible heart and desire and drive a lot of people realize now that Frazier wasn't a slugger but a scientific boxer it shows here in this fight with Chuvalo is bobbing and weaving is a great science in itself you don't see that a lot today maybe somebody athletes were better today but I believe they were more skillful back in Frazier's time

Chuvalo could take a sledge hammer punch and he had no defense. Not a good combo - that he and Jerry Quarry suffered from during the era of legends. George's brain slid down the rabbit hole, while Jerry's became the hole itself.

@@Bruins-vq5ey You're right; totally clueless. Not all people that boxed were brain dead afterward and to the contrary, George was totally coherent and clear-minded well into his 80s. Attitudes like that are jibberish from casual (or less) fans who have no idea what they're talking about.

The problem with the whole, "Chuvalo never got knocked down" stuff is that Foreman hit him with a left hook and he was 100% on his way down. The ropes kept him up. This takes nothing away from Chuvalo but there's a reason his team threw in the towel in the 3rd against Big George. He was getting knocked out. Cheers
