As a black guy who grew up with Motown and 1970’s reggae... this was the song that had me fall in love with white Blues Rock music. The intro is a creation of genius!! And Joe Cocker’s talented voice, passion and performance is magical. Music is the gift that unites the world more than anything else. I love it. 💖🙏🏾🎼🎸🥁🎼

Certainly Cocker was at his absolute best during this time - '68 to '71. Spine tinglingly, soulfully strong. Better still are his (live) versions of The Beatles; "Something " and Let It Be" - with The Grease Band, around this same time. Highly recommended and,for mine; Cocker classics. Let us give thanks to KZread and its supporters. Lest we would not enjoy such treasures.

PURE FIRE! This song was arranged, to perfection. The soulful voice, and performance from Joe Cocker, could easily place this song as one of the musical Wonders of the World. The 4 minute mark until the end, is musical thunder. The Greaseband, brung this song in, then took it out, to the NEXT level. The Drummer, Should be arrested for playing so damn Good. Thank You, To everyone that contributed to this powerful Song.

‘It’s really sad to hear about Joe’s passing. He was a lovely northern lad who I loved a lot and like many people I loved his singing,” McCartney says of Cocker, who has died at the age of 70 after a battle with lung cancer. “I was especially pleased when he decided to cover ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and I remember him and Denny Cordell coming round to the studio in Saville Row and playing me what they’d recorded and it was just mind blowing, totally turned the song into a soul anthem and I was forever grateful for him for doing that.” -- Paul McCartney.

Not many have "stolen" songs from the Beatles...most wouldn't even try. A powerful performance by a most powerful performer. Joe Cocker transcended all the blues-folk-rock-pop labels that some tried to put on him over the years. At the end of the line, all we can say is that he was an immense talent. I was glad I got to know his music. BTW, I still think the Woodstock version betters this one, though. RIP, Joe.

Is this the only clip from the BBC show "How It Is" ? Didn't know the show existed, but it ran for 33 episodes from 1968. It was superceded by "The Old Grey Whistle Test". It was advertised as: "A weekly programme by the young for the young in heart. It treats its audience as reasonably intelligent and aware people instead of as suburban suet puddings". There must be more clips than this, or were they wiped?

The Grease Band was a British rock band that originally formed as Joe Cocker's backing group. They appeared with Cocker during the 1960s, including his performance at the Woodstock Festival in August 1969. The band's name derived from an interview Cocker had read with the American jazz organist Jimmy Smith, who had approvingly described another performer as having "a lot of grease", with "grease" referring to soul.[1] After Cocker formed the Mad Dogs & Englishmen album band line-up, the group released two albums without him in the 1970s. Their keyboard player was Chris Stainton, who went on to tour extensively with Eric Clapton. Bassist Alan Spenner and rhythm guitarist Neil Hubbard went on to play in the UK blue-eyed soul band Kokomo; following this, Spenner worked in support of the late 1970s/early 1980s incarnation of Roxy Music. Drummer Bruce Rowland later joined Fairport Convention.[1] Henry McCullough was the Grease Band's lead guitarist, a role he later occupied in Paul McCartney's Wings, and continued as a solo artist until his death in June 2016.[2] Rowland, Spenner, Hubbard and McCullough all played on the original 1970 recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.[1]

I have always wondered if it was Tommy Eyre here. In 1968, he joined Joe Cocker's Grease Band where he played the organ on "With a Little Help from My Friends".[2] In the same year, Eyre moved to London to work with the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation and later with Dunbar's next rock band called Blue Whale. Something reminds me that perhaps the individuals didn't see Eyre to Eyre. Anyway, if it was, nice to run into TE again playing keyboards on the greatest guitar performance video of all time. Gary Moore and TMWCA. RIP.

Cocker's power back in the day was formidable. Pity that it sort ot wound down so early in his career. Could you still do that that scream today ? Peace to the Grease Band.and all us who remember the way it was.....
