Probably Calzaghe turned because he was accustomed to the line of previous refereeing, Calzaghe in his head had recorded a standard based on the previous matches or after that Calzaghe overhung the opponents, at a certain point the referee interrupted, the same happened against Sheika, that is Calzaghe in his head had shown enough superiority, but this judgment is not up to the boxers, but exclusively to the referee, who must be able to understand if Sheika is damaged and if it can continue quietly, for example in my personal experience Sheika was succumbing, and would have gone down within another two at the most three rounds, personally for how I intend boxing I would have continued, but I repeat the outcome would have been the same only that Sheika would come out with more damage, it does not take a genius to understand the dynamics of the match!

I'm glad Calzaghe won the fight and I'm even more happy he retired 46 and 0 but this was a terrible stoppage of a fight . The ref stopped it as Sheika was throwing fists . What the fuck was that lol ? Calzaghe would have won the fight by the next round anywayz , I have no doubt , but this stoppage sucked . Having said all of this tho , Calzaghe was a true champion and should be recognized and mentioned in the same sentence as the very best of the all time greats . And this coming from a proud American

The reason Calzaghe gets so much hate is because he does alot of flurries with light punches. But people don't get that it's done to setup his power punches. Light punches score more than no punches at all. Even the light ones can annoy or break the concentration of other fighters causing them to try and retaliate. Then they get hit with counter punches. It doesn't seem like he is doing much until you watch the replay and realize that Calzaghe landed 90% of his punches. He's just so fast that you don't see how many times he's actually connecting until you see the replay. But seriously most of the hate comes from Roy Jones fans that think he is a fighting god. Very skilled fighter as well but had many holes in his defense. Flashy fighters don't always = better fighters. To not give Joe any credit because you don't view him as 'the Best' is ridiculous and reeks of fanboyism.

I am not in favor of letting things go but Omar was still fighting. He pushed the ref and did not seem disoriented. I mean, you gotta let the guy fight. One punch changes things. But I like Joe.

It was stopped for a reason, if you watched this and did not understand the reason of that, you need to look into this properly. The reason it was stopped was for boxer safety.

In that last round, Sheika took 20 head-shots, some very hard, inside a minute's time while returning very little, mostly wild swings, meaningless body shots. Ref made the right decision, saved Sheika's bacon.

@@brianpurdy6072 there were 8 clean landed headshots, 5 for joe, 3 for sheika. both sheika and joe were swinging wildly. Just joes paid ref jumping in again, though the cut from joes illegal forehead smash wasnt looking good. If Sheika had paid the ref instead of joe, SHeika would have won in the same fashion.

He does also quite a bit. More importantly, he rabbit punches just as much. It's one thing when it's in accidentally, but sometimes it appears quite intentional. To call him the best is ridiculous. And the fight should have been allowed to continue, it wasn't necessary at that point to just end it.

The rabbit punch comment is laughable, it wasn't something that he did a lot and he was probably not deliberately doing it here; Sheika was clearly turning his head from Calzaghe which the referee rightly told him not to do, as well as warning Calzaghe. As for the stoppage, the rules had been neglected a bit in the past to see a man go down and not be able to stand any longer, and then it ended up in severe brain damage, which is why British boxing became more risk averse. if it isn't a contest any longer and one fighter isn't protecting themselves then it is the referee's job to stop it. Sheika didn't have the one big shot that could hurt Calzaghe even when he was fresh, he wasn't going to find it when he was wobbly and bloodied. Sheika had been shipping an increasing number of clean, heavy punches, he was getting increasingly wobbly. It might have been different if Sheika was showing signs of potentially coming back, but by that stage in the fight he'd given his best and he was a demonstrably inferior fighter who hadn't been able to shake Calzaghe and was increasingly unable to defend himself. Calzaghe had shown no difficulty in taking Sheika's big punches when they did land clean, and of course he was able to block or evade the majority of them, while Sheika failed on both counts in return.

The somewhat light punching Omar Sheika was simply another attempt to pad Calzaghe's impressive record of fighting unknowns, or those who's boxing skills had long deserted them. Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins were perfect examples of aged fighters seeking just another elevated payday before the lights went out. This monumental perpetual swatter supreme had little to commend him except the ability to move......rapidly.
