Joana Mallwitz on Mozart, the Salzburg Festival, and her secret for success

It’s a highlight of her career to date - Joana Mallwitz’s debut at the Salzburg Festival. She’s conducting Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”, combining passion with precision. Joana Mallwitz figures amongst the outstanding conductors of her generation. Opernwelt magazine named her their 2019 ‘Conductor of the Year’. Since the 2018/19 season she has been the General Music Director of the Staatstheater Nürnberg.
Born 1986 in Hildesheim, Joana Mallwitz undertook tertiary musical studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Hanover. There, at age 13, she was accepted into the first year by the Institute for the Early Advancement of the Musically Highly Gifted. The start of the 2014/15 season saw Joana Mallwitz take on her first executive position, as General Music Director of the Theater Erfurt - making her Europe’s youngest GMD.
In 2018 she moved on to the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where she conducted new productions of Prokofiev’s “War and Peace “ and Wagner’s “Lohengrin” - both of which were received enthusiastically by audiences and critics alike. Further engagements saw Joana Mallwitz working with the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Dresdner Philharmonie, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Kremerata Baltica, the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and the Oper Frankfurt.
She makes her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2020 with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Così fan tutte“, accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic and the Salzburg Festival vocal ensemble. The staging is by Christof Loy. Joana Mallwitz will be the first woman in the history of the festival to have been granted a full production series.
We spoke to Joana Mallwitz about Mozart, the Salzburg Festival, social-distancing rules in the time of the coronavirus, and her secret to success.

Playing Mozart is like learning to fly as a bird, she says... How true ... Wonderful conductor. Hope to see and hear her more often.
I went to school with her, we were in the same class (until she jumped classes). Even as a kid she did enchant everybody in our school with her mesmerizing piano playing.

I don't follow 100% because of my limitations understanding German language, but one thing I want to say, her conduction has the magical mix of sweetness and brute force to make Beethoven sound to the top...

Joana Mallwitz is not "full of herself,'" but she could, quite justifiably, be so. She is, in my estimation, a bright Star, not a comet, streaking through the night sky and then gone. She attributes her booking at the Salzburg Festival to "luck." Luck? With her musical and intellectual talents? She has been endowed with an incredibly sunny personality that glows, and, if all that is not enough for one person, she is a delight to look at and to hear talking. She LOVES her profession with a passion. My advice (for what it's worth) to the L.A Phil is: BOOK HER NOW!

Well that brought out a whole lotta sexism in the comments... We have a way to go but we’re slowly making progress. Does anyone know statistics on the proportion of men vs women conductors by age group? That is, we know that above a certain age there are barely any (Marin Alsop, Joanne Faletta, who else?), but is there a cohort or generation having parity or nearing parity? Maybe under-30s? What about under-40s?

The role of Fiordiligi was sung in this performance by the soprano Elsa Dreisig.
She is amazing. Fresh like Carlos Kleiber. She is German, a woman, and not as hot-tempered as he was. Speaking of female conductors, I remember Felix Weingartner, who performed at this festival about 90 years ago. He is known for having his disciple and wife, Carmen, act in his place often, causing much trouble when he stayed in Japan. Also, new Direction of opera are always not good.

@Birgit Meyer: Naja, es gibt sehr, sehr viele sehr gute Musiker/innen. Bei denen, warum auch immer, nicht so ein künstlicher Medienhype gemacht wird. Geht halt nur drum, wie sich jemand verkaufen läßt...

bei 5:38 wird abgebildet, was Mama Joana davor in Worte fasst, nämlich die Synergie durch Gesang und Orchester bei Mozart, indem das Orchester - mit kleinerem Ornat zur Ausnahme - den Gesang spiegelt und das passiert hier in Dis-Dur vorsichtig vermutet... Le p'tit Daniel, erste Begegnungen können ja so schön sein... ...vor allem, wenn sie da passieren, wo es etwas zu schnabolieren gibt... ...of course that is finally up to her, since it is Mamas call...

Depends on whom you think she is showing. Because she is quite properly ahead of the orchestra, she is showing them. That's the job of a conductor.

@Paul Thuine: Sie bringen es genau auf den Punkt! Beitrag erweckt den Eindruck man wolle sich vor der Darstellung ihrer Leistung drücken. Möglicherweise nicht unbegründet. Ihr Schlag wirkt leider eher wie der einer Chordirigentin mit Habitus des evangelischen Kirchentags.
