@@madelinetramantano8302 While I agree with you that making fun of people can cause harm, I don't think it's fair to say that Joan Rivers made a living by doing that. First and foremost Joan was a comedienne, one of the first female ones, and she was a trailblazer for the comediennes of today. She was also a great representative for women. She pushed the limits and did things that women were not allowed to do at the time. She was just as funny and successful as any of her male counterparts and she was working hard til the day she died. Longevity. While her latter career incorporated making fun of fellow celebrities, at least the things she said were honest and real. She said what was on our minds. And she was the victim of the same thing in Hollywood, the butt of many jokes and punchlines. She understood that when you sign up to be a celebrity, you had to take everything that came with it even the negative things. In a way that's part of what celebs get paid for. If they can't handle it then they need to reconsider what they've chosen to do for a living.

It’s probably because of the way she grew up. According to her she grew up chubby and ugly, even though if you see pictures of her really young I thought she was really pretty. She always joked about her “ugliness” a lot through the 80s and 90s but I always thought she was pretty.

Margaret well yeah, but a lot of comedians take inspiration for a lot of their material from real life issues. And she’s done serious interviews where she talks about it with no comedy context. She has even joked about eating disorders, and she herself struggled with bulimia in her adult life right after her husband died.

I swear regardless of thought or whatever Oprah must have been thinking when Joan (whom I also love) asked her this offhanded question in front of millions, I love how Oprah handled this with grace and no real animosity despite being shamed. Still love them both sometimes dumb things are done on television and she’s also a comedian which she never meant any harm and probably in her mind thought she meant well.

After she made it she no longer had to “put on…” her radio/tv voice or personality to be accepted into mainstream daytime television. When she hit the scene most people didn’t look like her and she had to assimilate into their culture to fit their standards. Example: just because I make reference to my dark Black skin doesn't mean that that leaves the door wide open for a white person to call me a dark skinned, Black N$gger! The same with weight. To justify that in any way is just pure wilful ignorance with a determination to collude in abusive and shaming tactics, all in the guise of 'jokes/banter'. It wasn't merely insensitive, it was malicious. Everyone in America knew that Oprah struggled with her weight and that it was always a sore spot for her, including razor sharp and observant, Joan Rivers. You would think that someone who was so insecure about her own looks (and eventually died on the plastic surgeon's table at over 70 yrs old trying to meddle with her looks!) would be empathetiv and more respectful of another Woman's physical appearance but she went in for the kill because she wanted wanted make Oprah feel as bad as SHE was feeling internally and she used her public platform to maximum effect to humiliate and shame, a very successful Black Woman. That was malicious. Not 'a tad insensitive'.

Idk, it’s cool for someone to bring it up about themselves but for someone else to keep talking about it on national television? No. Maybe if it was a private conversation, but on TV? No. Just no. And usually when people mention their weight like that it’s because they’re insecure but want to deal with what they think is the elephant (no pun intended) in the room. In other words she assumed everyone else was wondering how this “fatty,” could ever win a beauty contest so she explained. Joan didn’t need to do that. But that’s Joan for you. I agree though. It's funny because Oprah tells it another way. Saying she was fat shamed. First of all, Oprah is the one that brought it up and opened the door. She said oh 50 pounds ago. So Joan jumps in and says why did you let that happen. I mean 50 pounds is alot people and I think Joan was showing concern for her. It's funny to watch this clip because it's like Oprah is a completely different person. She's humble, self depricating, nothing like the person she evolved into with the holier than though massive ego. Ever watch her interview experts on her show. They are right in the middle of a sentence and she interupts them and jumps over them to talk. It's so annoying. So many missed lessons because she doesn't let them finish.

I remember seeing this interview on the Joan River's show when it was orginially on. That was 25 long years ago. I knew Oprah was going to go places, and boy did she go!!! It doesn't matter if Oprah if thin or heavy, she is adorable. I love Joan too. She can be a little abrasive with her comedy sometimes, but it's only in fun. You have to take Joan with a grain of salt. She's basically a good person.

Agreed! Love them both but Oprah handled this in stride and still used this interview as an opportunity to connect with Joan and the audience. She took an uncomfortable moment and turned it around as an opportunity to show warmth, humor and class. It's no wonder why she's been such and incredible success.

I know this was a big deal and people were mad at Joan, but Joan was right and oprah was the one who brought her weight up

@@KowloonHK People are happier when they stop worrying about being as attractive, famous, wealthy, talented, or as powerful and influential as people they hear about on their computer and smartphone screens. I can understand a musician feeling inadequate because they'll never compose something as great as Beethoven - that means you have lofty goals. But, an internet "influencer" being despondent because they don't have enough "likes" this week compared to another influencer? Blimey! 😬

Oprah went on to say pretty insulting things to people in interviews too, but with a far bigger audience, which made it way worse.

@@mel2000 Michelle Philips, when she was promoting her book, a woman with multiple personality disorder who she described as "pretty crazy", right in front of the woman, etc. I've also seen some clips here on You Tube where she is just plain blunt and rude to some people. There was someone she really ridiculed badly and humiliated them on and on and people were saying in the comments they agreed with the guest, not Oprah. From what I recall I think she implied a woman was obviously promiscuous, going by her appearance, but she actually was not at all and there was nothing wrong with her appearance either.

Oprah is thinner here than she became now.

Oprah was young and green back then. The Oprah show didn’t exist when this interview aired. She would never let anyone treat her this way today, not even a Joan Rivers.

Tabloids would write that stuff behind her back. Joan said it to her face and allowed her to respond. She was bold.. and respectful, it’s show business.

Doubt she ever went back or appeared with Joan again.

Oprah really took that in her stride :)

She also asked Ruben studdard on the red carpet what he was going to do about his weight and pressing him to go on a diet. He was looking at her with a surprised pikachu face.

Who could disrespect a person that passed away? She has a family and friends that love her. Have respect for everyone and let’s hope respect will be given to us all, as well.

Disrespect? Joan criticized people her whole life. Maybe it's a weird survival technique humans have. Focus on ourselves...not what others feel or say. Criticizing someone for disrespecting a dead person.....is an attack on a living person!! I'm trying not to be critical...lol.

Joan Rivers actually was giving Oprah her big break here. She went out of her way to get Oprah on the show.

Oprah is full of crap saying Joan shamed her about being fat. When Joan says that she heard Oprah was in a beauty contest, Oprah replies, “That was 50 lbs ago.” Oprah is the one who brought up the fact that she was fat, not Joan.

Well, Joan was only telling her the truth. She should have listened.

For an unfamiliar TV star in those days, this marked the beginning of Oprah Winfrey's long-running friendship with Joan Rivers, whom she met on the set of "The Tonight Show." For near 3 decades, they both talked about a lot of things, and that includes 4 yrs. @ The Daytime Emmy Awards (between 1990 and 1993), where Oprah has won more Awards, than Rivers (whom she only won once). In 1999, Rivers was reunited with Winfrey on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," who got people to talk about having people to look beautiful. Great comedienne, may she RIP! :(
