I've never understood why Joan Rivers thought she was unattractive. She's on camera, without makeup and without her hair styled and she's beautiful. Granted, she's had work done, but she's not an ugly woman.

The vile she spewed out, under the guise of "comedy" assured that SHE was her own worst critic, caricature of her self-depreciating comedic self. America laughed as she sat alone with mental health issues...no different from Robin Williams. Tragic comedy.

she was always honest, and she was a very good looking lady, I thought she looked younger without the makeup, doctor did a very good job, Joan was too hard on herself, a perfectionist, she looked great before the op too

Cosmetic surgery in those days was very crude and ineffective compared to today. Pretty much their only solution for loose skin and blemishes associated with aging was "Uhh we'll just stretch it out to remove the wrinkles" and (surprise surprise) it made her face unnatural and tight looking.

I’m just happy that she left this earth while still able minded and the same person she always has been. You can see Betty White is suffering now, her speech and thinking are severely impaired. Joan never wanted to be like that

@wyzemann - Thank you for echoing my sentiments exactly. During my long life, I have seen lots of celebrities and famous people die, but Joan's death really affected me more than anyone else. I read all of her books, watched her on all of her different shows and tuned in every time she was on QVC - just because I dearly loved her and she always made me laugh. My late mother and I would watch her comedy monologues and laugh til we cried because she was so genuine and honest. She spoke aloud what we were thinking but didn't say. The world is a bit colder now without her.

The audience is so under whelmed. These are regular folks who couldn't care less about plastic surgery.

Do you know there is a plastic surgeon in every major city in the USA? It's definitely not because celebrities are going to Spokane, Washington for a face lift, it's because "normal" people want to look good too. And especially at this point without Google, people needed to really know what they were about to do. Also, the audience is doing what they're supposed to do, sitting there and listening. It's not supposed to sound like a school assembly like on Ellen or Wendy Williams.

I’ve never seen a picture of her that young before! Funny she used to joke about being born ugly, she was actually exquisitely beautiful in her 20s!

She had such delicate features and amazing skin and eyes before the surgery. Beautiful without the makeup. I went to LA a few times lol Hollywood makes EVERYONE feel ugly and I was a model at the time. I felt so fat. Looking back I wasn’t everyone around me was definitely anorexic.

She actually looks 10 years younger when she didn't have all that makeup and hairspray on.

A lady with a fantastic personality and her death was so tragic and un-necessary

We loved Joan. She was a brilliant comic. Her material, her timing ... We lost another of the greats. R.I.P. Joan, without you the world seems less funny, a real void has been created. Hoping your still doing stand-up "upstairs" in the heavens , entertaining the masses !

I agree. It is baffling why the audience is applauding her insecurity driven decision to keep having all of these plastic surgery procedures. And what is sad is a portion of her talk show is dedicated to this. Instead of applauding her, someone should've suggested she get therapy and help. It's a shame she never learned to just lover herself as is. And now she has rubbed off on her daughter who looks so unnatural now at age 54 with all the procedures she has done to her pretty face.

For whatever reason, Joan didn't feel pretty but these surgical procedures made her feel pretty, it's her body and mind and it's not our place to judge!

Some things did make her look from ok to really good. She looked fabulous for a long time. Ageing catches up though and plastic surgery just can do so much. She just started putting a lot of filler In her face after 2000 and had cheek implants which made her look hella different. She looked really fresh in the early 2000s though with her short hair cut. Looked like a sexy grandma. Than she just put way more filler in her face because she was getting way saggier skin. In the end you can't say she looked bad for an 81 year old, fabulous until the end.

Its also important to let everyone know the importance of having healthy self-esteem so that the feelings of needing to constantly "fix" oneself is more important than looking a certain way. Its not judgmental to learn from people who were doing surgery to such a destructive level that there is a way to live happily without going under the knife over and over.

I caught onto Joan when she was keying on celebs especially Liz Taylor, still love her and yes if I shared an elevator with the pathetic losers that killed her, I would feel obliged to give the Surgeon and anesthesiologist the shaft, a fall of around 150-200 feet down the shaft. I miss Joan along with Melissa who has been through enough. Melissa is beautiful and a wonderful businesswoman, together mom and daughter were magic

I love 90s talk shows too! I have a few local gems with big stars like Bea Arthur (1995), Lauren Bacall (1994) and Martha Stewart! A really good one is also Psychic Predictions from 1992 - a real gas. If you get a chance, check 'em out!

They really should refer their clients to a psychiatrist when it's clear that body image is the problem. Dolly Parton is another example. Of course they'd rather make millions from doing the surgery.

She was in entertainment business, just check Kris Jenner sister she looks pretty rough in comparison. I think it was fine other than those cheek implants that made her look super different in the early 2000s. My point- She wasn't the only one to get a ton of plastic surgery and it kept her looking fresh all the way up until she died!!

The surgery made her look older. And we can't really do a fair assessment of the before & after since she had professional hair, makeup and lighting in the after.
