Speaking on qualifications...Isn't your CEO Thokozani Nkosi a Dramatic Arts graduate from Wits? The dude has been an Actor and a Producer for years, landing a role in a "Dangerous Grounds" a film that stars Ice Cube. He then went on to produce a number of shows under his Tox Media company which produced The Chatroom and Big Up and Gospel Time. He then went on to land a role as a News Anchor on SABC where he met your 2nd CEO Thabile Ngwato who was also a News Anchor... His experience in television makes him a capable CEO in running Newzroom Afrika though as a Dramatic Arts student, didn't he learn more about acting and theory in the dramatic field as in what it takes to be a good actor? What does an Actor know about running a news station? To answer that, he started work as an Actor but later became a production assistant, where he learned about what it takes to be a television producer which resulted in him producing the shows stated above, he ditched the auditioning life to work behind the scenes in creating television content, do this for a number of years and there you have it, Newzroom Afrika is born. It even poached and hired veteran anchors such as yourself JJ and other former ENCA employees. WHat is my point here, Hlaudi has been working with the SABC since he was about 19 years old...Working for Lesidi FM as a contributing translator and then turned radio producer...that's where he learned how the SABC works, let's say as a foundation. That's his story, as radio producers you liaise with broadcasting executives in knowing how and why content is produced the way it is in spirit of the SABC a public broadcasting service that has content made to educate and entertain the masses. He got his foot in the door and thus he worked his butt off to get to Auckland Park. He knew the SABC in and out and just like Thokozani he learned on the job about what it takes to make productions work as well as hanging out with the right people where he learned the business side of things. So does a qualification count? My research has taught me that in broadcasting, experience is key and not what you know but rather who you know, your qualification does not matter here as broadcasting can be considered more of a vocational job. Granted studying broadcast journalism helps, media studes or television production but as a television and video production graduate myself, since I do not have the experience in the industry since school, it's been tough for me to get into the field because I do not know a lot of people in it and my classmates are of no help to me either. You need qualifications if you wish to enter broadcasting from a business perspective or legal as these two components are needed in order to acquire music rights and business strategies to help promote content to it's supposed target market however these can also be taught when you are on the field and in the game playing. One of your anchor's is Sizwe Dlomo who has a history in Gossip news am i right? This dude used to work for MTV as a presenter and he is a Computer Science Graduate, this is very far from journalism unless he was working in reviewing Tech gadgets for a television channel but yet he was interviewing celebrities about their music and acting careers, he then got serious when he moved to 702 which introduced him to journalism and hard hitting interviews and transforming into somebody who speaks on current affairs in politics and general news. This is very far from computer science if you ask me but that didn't stop him from becoming a presenter on some credible media and broadcast outlets. Hlaudi may have been the employee who loved what he did that he took extra time to self-study how the business is run, though I must admit maybe he should have gotten his matric and then went for an MBA before taking on the COO position at the SABC, I mean a dude with that kind of passion for broadcast equiped with the business sense would have resulted in the SABC running smoothly. Let's also not forget that it wasn't just him that drove it to the ground, Hlaudi was also an innocent bystander in politics too, he was pushed by the Minister of Communications as well as Jacob Zuma to use the SABC as a Money pool to loot funds, he couldn't bite the hand that feeds him. That's why he thought he had all the power, when the President of RSA and Minister of Communications are backing you, you could practically do whatever you want and never fear losing your job and why not...I am friends with the president. So education helps open doors but it does not gurantee a career in the field you studied for unless it's straight forward like Doctor, Lawyer, Accounting and such, we still have Engineers sitting at home, we have unemployed Doctors, Poor Lawyers and Accountants who hate their career choice...Education helps but it does not make great leaders or thinkers as well, I mean we had Judge Mtata who got arrested for Drunk Driving...A fully qualified Judge who has probably precsided over cases of Drunk drivers but he was caught doing the exact thing...So really, education gets you that but for a lot of people, it did not open the doors they wanted and it can also result in a dfferent career path which has nothing to do with what you studied.
