or it could just be that being 78 in 2021 means you can be healthier than 78 in 1940. There was a point in time when 20-30 year olds looked like they were in their 60s. People are generally healthier and live longer.

They had turned Luger way too fast. He debuted in January as a heel, then he makes this sudden patriotic babyface turn after six months in the company, with "Real American" Hulk Hogan still fresh in the minds of the fans. Luger felt like a forced replacement for Hogan, and the fans never got into the push. There was far more support for Bret Hart, and then the Summerslam finish of a DQ killed it all.

That might be true, but I wanted Lex to win at Summerslam 93. The way they booked him (and Bret, and Yoko) during that period made them ALL look like morons and buried all of their drawing ability. Bret lost clean to Bulldog, Owen, the Quebecers, never had his title win even televised, and didn't get any huge wins over established stars. Lex looked like a moron at SS 93, had pure confusion at RR 94, and then a choker at WMX, and couldn't even win the tag titles. Yoko, the supposed "monster heel," needed Fuji to beat Bret, then got squashed in 30 seconds by Hulk Hogan, then needed a fireball to win the second time and 10 guys to beat the Undertaker (a 600-pound cowardly heel, what a stupid misuse of him), and then needed Mr. Perfect to cheat to have him win at WMX (in a match where the fans chanted boring at the action and "bulls**t" at the finish). There's a reason they nearly went out of business in those years. Their product was terrible and didn't start to fix itself until '96 when Steve Austin showed up.

As far as the Lex Express angle was concerned, Vince made a mistake by thinking he could re-brand Lex as Hogan 2.0. There is only one Hulk Hogan. Nobody can fill his shoes, nor should they attempt to. Had Vince let Lex be the Lex of pre- and post-WWF, maybe it would've worked out better.

Lex would have been fine in the WWF had they left him heel. Could have been a great heel and worked with Bret, Taker, etc. Some guys in this business are just babyfaces and some are just heels. Lex was a natural heel. His best work to me was 1989 in the NWA.

Fans were still upset at how Hogan "won" that belt at Wrestlemania IX. Fans got behind Bret Hart. Lex had the bus, toured several places to sign autographs and take pictures that were advertised on TV, top wrestlers at that time supporting Lex, a new theme song that had the "inspirational" beat, and slammed Yokozuna in that bodyslam challenge. The Summerslam countout victory screwed up his push when I read Vince made that last minute change to extend their rivalry to Wrestlemania. They can't have the babyface as champion in WrestleMania, and Yokozuna beating Luger would've also hurt his push. If Jim cheated for Yokozuna to win, then that could've hurt Yokozuna's push as this nearly indestructible wrestler. I read a suggestion that Luger wins the belt at Summerslam, Jim Cornette comes out saying Luger's bionic arm (the metal plate) was why he won and the belt is vacated or goes back to Yokozuna, then they wrestle at Wrestlemania where Lex wins the belt. Not sure what would they have done about the "bionic arm". That would've been either WWF changes the rules or Lex wrestled with one arm tied behind his back. I remember wrestlers saying Lex was hard to work with when wrestling in the ring, so wrestling with one arm tied was more likely a no-go. Regardless, fans including me wanted Bret Hart to be the champion again.

WCW / WWE just didn't mix. That schism goes back to NWA / WWWF long ago. The NYC area was more accepting of showier cartoonish turns and angles than grittier, down to earth, largely southern NWACL audiences. Just my opinion. This, of course, like most of life not a black and white thing... but pretty big difference in shades of grey.

The fans saw through the "Lex Express" nonsense. Vince was trying to recreate Hulk Hogan and fans were not buying into it. That sort of character was passe. Fans were sick of the "American Made" Hogan back then, why would they want a fake Hogan???? McMahon does some truly stupid things and continues to do so.

I was a kid during the Lex Express run, and I totally bought into it as did every kid I knew. The thing that deflated Lex's big babyface run, was the way he won by countout at Summerslam and lamely celebrated as if it was an accomplishment. Then he never actually got a run with the title, because by the time of RR 1994, most supported Bret as Champion instead.

To be fair to Lex. He was given a big Push in 1993 only to have the door slammed in his face at the last hurdle. 1994 looked like the Push was back on.....only to get the door slammed again. Possibly because the fans didnt want another muscled "All American Hero" after having gone through 9 years of that with Hogan. They wanted something different (Bret Hart). 1995 saw him teamed with Bulldog which had promise but once again, he was denied a title belt. I dont blame Luger for walking out and going back home (WCW)

Lex Express was a case of right idea, wrong guy..Lex was always a better heel because he was pretty unlikable. Imagine if they did the whole bodyslam thing on the USS Intrepid, but when the helicopter landed, out came Sting in his G.A.B 1990 outfit. I think in 1993, Sting was the guy to be the new WWF American babyface. You would have thought that they would have used Flair & Lex to try and convince him to go to WWF at that time.

I like Luger as a natural heel. Why? The business of pro wrestling were in a transitional stage. Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Ole Anderson, Bill Watts, Kevin Sullivan an others unmentioned were destroying the future of the business aspect of pro wrestling. Why? Lack of originality an same old outdated repetitious traditions. Luger, Sting an Warrior had to deal with these old lying, sneaky an conniving pricks mentioned above. Vince had great vision an changed the face of pro wrestling (sports entertainment). That's the key word (entertainment). Gotta love Vinny Mac.

So true. I'll never take away anything from him as far as his body goes, because lets face it, the guy was in shape. But just because you have a great body, doesn't always equate into a good wrestler. Case N point, Lou Thesz, Vern Gagne, Harley Race, & Ric Flair ALL had an average body at best, with maybe Flair being a bit more chiseled but Flair was in no way on the same level as Lex in that department. But the thing is IMO, fellers like the Thesz, like the Race, like the Gagne, like the Flair, ALL could wrestle, to where Lex didn't know a wrist lock from a hammerlock. IMO in wrestling, its gonna take allot more than having a great body, in order to pass as a real legit wrestler. And IMO Lex just flat out DIDN'T have it. Nothing personal to Lex, but its just simple but fact.
