I saw JJ Cale when he toured Australia (mid 1970's?). Was so laid back he did not talk to the audience letting another band member introduce the songs.

I grew up in Oklahoma discovered JJ Cale around 17 years of age. He never promoted himself that wasn’t important to him. Sorry i forget the details but he was to play on American Band Stand with Dick Clark. JJ showed up with the band and was setting up to play but found out that ABS used prerecorded music, he started to leave and Dick Clark came down to convince in to stay. JJ told him that he and his band were musicians and left.

I am so happy to have the chance to check your reaction. JJ Cale it is not the artist that take too much attention in the promotion of his career and the video of quality concerning him and this one is it one the great rare of the Artist. We are far from a band like Pink Floyd. Mr Cale seems to have been so humble throughout is in living as musician. You ask about good performance of this Artist? Please, Artificial Paradise (live from, the Loft Sessions) that could be nice to compare with the one produced in studio. 2 fantastical option. But what impress me the most from the Artist is his interest in so differents styles of music and I will propose some songs that show so much his style and his way cool as musician. Chasing you, Closer to you (sexiest song), Days go by, Deep dark dungeon, Devil Nurse, Don’t go to the Strangers, Downtown L.A., Fonda Lina, DURANGO, Everything’s will be alright, Homeless (Please pick from Luis Vincent’s de Aguinaga), Lonesome Train, Traveling Light, Ride the River, Sensitive Kind, Tijuana. With just those one’s songs, that resume his love for the music and the musicians who like playing with him. And this last song, Devil in Disguise ( live, from the 2 meters sessie), will present JJ Cale with Madame Christine Lakeland his wife. You see by their expression, the love they look to have share together throughout 36 years to make music together. Merci and sorry for my poor English, Daniel from St Emile de Suffolk Québec 🎸👍👋

Such a deceptively simple style and yet, there are few who can sound anything like JJ Cale. Instantly recognizable guitar playing with that laconic laid back voice. No wonder EC was such a fan.

I think, George, what you’re trying to say is that even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. 🤣 As for typewriters jamming keys, the actual layout of the keys was designed to slow down typing so there were less jams. That’s why common letters like ‘a’ get put over where the pinky finger on your left hand has to deal with it. So now we’re all using QWERTY keyboards that are actually designed to not have us typing as fast as we could if we had a different key layout. As for the music? Top stuff. As a kid in garage bands, the laconic sound of JJ’s song Cocaine was a staple track for us all to rip out a version. We never captured the feel right, but we felt authentic.

Went to jr high and high school in Western Oklahoma and made my Church of Christ minister father take me to the little music store to buy Troubadour when I was 13 in the early 70's?. Then Naturally, which is a great, great album. It was always puzzling to me why Americans didn't worship JJ and why the English (like the hosts Here) admire him. But I was an Okie and JJ was from Tulsa, so he did get a little FM play in the 70's. There is something about that JJ Cale restrained guitar that is relaxing; I never slept well but often listen to him at night (also Miles Davis).

I will say that being behind on the beat probably (maybe) comes from Bob Wills swing, which Willie Nelson and others always replicate--Willie is often almost a half beat or more behind then catches up, both in his vocals and in his guitar work. And of course Bob Wills got this from the great blues/jazz vocalists, so it's not really a country swing thing; Wills took it from jazz blues which he recorded often in the 30s. Anyone listening to CW swing (like JJ would have done since he was 12-15 years older than me) would get this. I met Eldon Shamblin, Wills guitarist and did a lot of the charts, when he was doing a bit of car repair work at the place of a friend of my dad's in Weatherford, OK in the mid 70's. His nephew was a classmate of mine. I didn't realize who he was until a day later (walked back from wrestling practice to get a ride). In many respects JJ is an Okie jazz guitarist.

Well, I am late to the party again, but as always, better late than never. You have two legends of music reveling in their own perfection here. These guys are from my era, well, to be honest, a bit before my era, but I was the youngest of five in my family, so my oldest sister was 13 years older than me. As such, Clapton, in various iterations was on high rotation in my house. So ... both of these magnificent, yet different, musicians are not my 'growing up' bands, and I more know of Clapton than I know of Cale. These were two fantastic songs; Clapton held back and let Cale do his thing. Very respectful and gave space for Cale to work his casual magic. Now, I am going out on a limb here, but does anyone (if they know him) think that Canadian folk/blues singer, Harry Manx, has some similar vibe going on with Cale. I feel both of them have a real southern blues crossover going on. Granted, Manx has a more world music feel, but he also brings a serious southern blues game. I saw Harry Manx at the Caloundra Music festival in 2018 or 2019 (I'm leaning towards 2019)? He mesmerized the house. Anyway, JJ cale seems to have the ability to just wind punters in with his ability be such a cool 65 year old, with such wicked licks and perfect control. I am keen to see videos of Cale when he was at his peak.

@@TheThamesmen I'm sure Chris will know Harry Manx. He has toured Australia on several occasions. The first paragraph from his Wikipedia page. "Harry Manx (born 1955) is a Canadian musician who blends blues, folk music, and Hindustani classical music. His official website describes his music as being a "blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves and you'll get Manx's unique "mysticssippi" flavour."[1] Manx plays the slide guitar, harmonica, six-string banjo, mohan veena and Ellis stomp box. He studied for five years in India with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Bhatt is the inventor of the 20-stringed mohan veena, which has become Manx's signature instrument.[2] He has released twelve albums in twelve years, and has his own record label Dog My Cats Records.[2] He has received much recognition and many awards, including: seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Music Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist, and CBC Radio’s "Great Canadian Blues Award" in 2007.[2]"

food for thought Monterey Pop Festival not sure how much video is available The Association, The Paupers, Lou Rawls, Johnny Rivers, Eric Burton and the Animals, Simon and Garfunkel, Canned Heat, Big brother and the Holding Comany with Janis Joplin, Country Joe and the fish, Al Kooper, Quick Silver Messenger Service, Steve Miller, Electric Flag, Moby Grape, The Byrds, Laura Nyro, Jefferson Airplane, Booker T and the MG's, Ottis Redding, Rave Shankar, Buffalo Springfield (neil yonge steven still the start of great music), The Who, The Greatful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Momas and the Popas, Scot McKenzie single with Moma and Paps, Janis Joplin doing Ball and Chain is a must see for me the best performance I have ever seen, Moby Grape, Quick Silver Messenger service Electric Flag all groups I had records for that have slide into a closet with Tape, CDs then Itunes etc.they certainly give people the crown jewels in the music scene excluding pop music. Thinking there are a couple of groups that could be due a session with the Thamesmen!!! Food For Thought. Follow the friendship and musical adventures the ups and downs of Stephen Stills and Neil Young from the time the met in Canada up until the present time. Has any two musicians not named Lenon/McCartney had more hits and longevity in their careers. Thanks PS my next push the rock bands that rocked the UK late 60's throught to the 80s. you really need to check out Rory Gallagher. The more I read about him and hear other guitar players say about him, Brian May pays him great tribute not only as a human but also a musician
