The guillotine choke is an extremely dangerous move that people are factory installed with. It is in the same family as the headlock, but because it has more of a tendency to be an actual choke, it is urgent that you defend it intelligently and immediately.
This video is in a series I will be doing in collaboration with The Budo Brothers. They are a great group of martial artists interested in promoting positivity in the community and helping kids get to train, who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. Check them out! Their info is below.

    I'm in a military college and we always have little mma match ups, every single fight ends up in a guillotine choke because they think that always works, I needed this so I can beat everyone there, this was the thing I always lose to, I do mma at the moment and losing to a guillotine is dreadful, thanks for the help!

    that only works vs new people, another similar trained individual, once they have the choke on you it's game over. Hence instructor say this is for beginner self-defense, "I don't want to get to this position in the first place". The only person that got away from this in a real match vs another pro is khabib, and that was a dangerous moment even for him. So think about that.

    I've been taught after the knee clip with the arm over, to reach out and find the floor/ground/pavement etc as to not smash your elbow upon landing and get your arm pinned behind the head. Just a little detail I've seen. Nice technique. Love your vids. I can definitely see the lineage.

    Eli, I really appreciate moments like 1:20 where you clarify any alternatives if there is no material you’re able to get a grip on. I always wonder in other people’s demos what the alternatives are and you almost ALWAYS address them all in the same video/motion. Thanks for everything you do for the community. It’s always dope, technique focused, easy to understand and the fact that you frequently highlight gi/no-gi alternatives makes it even better.

    If it's in the gi, then you can just supplant the Gable grip with clothing grips, but if it is no gi, sometimes grabbing the choking arm's tricep with your bottom arm can work too.

    The Von Flue is one of my favourite beginner submissions because the partner doesn't know he is in such a bad position when he is holding your head, you can finish a drill in seconds by giving a standing guilotine wich is your bait in reality. On the other hand it is a bit of dangerous to do it because the partners hands are trapped and you might not feel the tap. So it is wiser to stop and show him how he would have lost.

  • @criostasi4080

    Nice and easy. The escape I know and train. I have a doubt that need your answer. Can you escape the choke also making some sort of duck under by the side of the arm that is choking you? (I hope you understand what I am saying. You can see this kind of escape in some jujitsu/seld defense channels)

  • @KnightJiuJitsu

    @KnightJiuJitsu

    Definitely. It requires some speed and explosiveness but it can be very successful. Conor McGregor used something similar against Nate Diaz at one point.

    Thanks! I usually get that lifting type action to tighten, but 1 taller guy gets the guillotine and then jumps to guard and then immediately arches hard. It seems a bit of a bully move, but it is still embarrassing to tap given the experience difference. I feel like I could maybe weather it and work my way out, but often tap for fear of injury. Any tips for when they immediately jump guard after getting the guillotine to at least buy some time vs. a stronger opponent?

  • @KnightJiuJitsu

    @KnightJiuJitsu

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment and question. This defense is much more suited to someone trying to finish from standing and honestly a less technical person. If the person is giving energy and posture to make you think they may jump guard then it’s better to monitor the hips instead. The defense and escape strategy changes, but their posture should indicate their intention on how they plan to finish the choke.

    awesome, they got a guillotine on me during a competition as i went for the single leg, able to escape but still its a spot im all too familiar with. Would the defense be the same if the person is taller? in regards to the von flue, i can always get it, but i do have some trouble when they manage to slide a knee shield in, is that more because I am too low or because I am not following the person as they reattempt guard? maybe both? awesome videos, thank you helps a lot!

  • @KnightJiuJitsu

    @KnightJiuJitsu

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. For a taller person, it’s the same. I teach this to kids all the time and they can do it pretty well even at a pretty big disparity in size. By knee shield, do you mean top or bottom knee? It sounds like you’re describing the bottom knee, but knee shield typically refers to the top, or far side knee. If it is the bottom knee, from their attempt to reguard, it’s not that big of an issue. There are some great examples of this being applied successfully from half guard. Braulio Estima and Vincent St Prieux are both great MMA examples I can think off the top of my head of finishing the Von Flue from half guard. Hope this helps.

I tried to break their grip, but they're too strong. I tried to get lower and then go for a single leg, they sprawl and spin on my back. Do you have any advice on how to get rid of this annoying problem? Thank you very much!
