0:35 Just beautiful. This one charge summs perfectly his attitude, style and commitment to fighting. Great video and reminder for young fans of grappling, but especially for old fans of Brazilian Tiger.

up until the meta changed (eg 10th planet style, marcelo garcia then dagestan) I considered Arona to be the single greatest submission grappler of all time regardless of sport. its not like i dont now but my god id love to see a natural successor to the tiger and how theyd do in the modern game.

Great vid man! Literally one of the most underrated mma fighters of all time. The only guy i saw dominate prime Wanderlei Silva, (twice in fact, though technically they gave the second fight to Silva though imo it was a robbery). He woulda dominated in the UFC. The only guys who beat him were other freak athletes, whether it be Rampage, Shogun, or even Sokoudjou, (with the last guy just managed to catch Ricardo and then finished him, in a rematch i have no doubt Arona would beat him).

He was definitly unlucky few times. Against Fedor and Wand (2nd time) he should be a winner, against Rampage he was winning the whole fight, Rampage's leg was already destroyed by Arona's low kicks and against Shogun in the final of gp, he was injured really bad and amount of painkillers they injected him made him sleepy and almost unable to fight. He was a freak of nature, but his striking (expect brutal low kicks) was really bad 🤣 Without improvement it would be hard for him to get on top in the UFC.

@@smesh141 Yeah - your spot on. Especially seeing as how Rampage was champ at the time. There were tons of dudes he would have, or at least had a high likelihood of beating, from Rashad, maybe Chuck (and that's a maybe due how even though he had ZERO ground game, he had pretty much the best td defense of all time - which he was forced to develop cuz aside for him the LHW division's elite were dominant grapplers/wrestlers, from Randy, to Tito, to Sobral, and so on - so he very well might've been able to have stayed on his feet, and if he had - then he would've pieced Arona up at range badly), Forest Grif, Jardine, Bonner, and the forementioned Tito. That said though, Rampage was at that time - a whole other beast entirely. Even though he was champ and defended it once, (twice in my book, cuz I think he was robbed in that fight where he lost the belt to Forest), he really nowadays doesn't get the credit for being as elite as he was in his prime - starting in his final few years while in pride, up through to his first few years in the UFC). Like Chuck - Rampage too had a tremendous td game, seeing as how he was a wrestler before going into mma, combined with the fact he was legit one of the - if not the single - strongest and most powerful/explosive LHW of all time. But more importantly - he improved his striking game by leaps and bounds from where he was when he power-bombed Arona in their first meeting. So much so he was prolly the single most dangerous striker in the world at LHW, (with Wandi, Shogun, and Chuck being really the ones who were close), due to his massive increased technical skill, his phenomenal defense, and unrivaled ko-power. While coupled with excellent precision with his strikes - this made him possibly the single deadliest ko artist in division history. Add all this to the fact he developed an excellent in the clinch game, (a prefect example of this being his Machida win). I legit can't think of a single way Arona woulda beaten him outside of a hail-marry ko or something freakish like that.

@@8301TheJMan Arona's wrestling was unstoppable in ADCC, but in mma it was a lot harder for him, because his stand up game was so bad that he was not able to use it as a set up for takedowns. Many times he was shooting from a long distance, which was risky and unprepared. After years in mma his striking was still horrible, so probably he was not putting much effort to change it and without it he had no chance to make waves in the UFC. But it's good for him that he retired, from what I've heard, he never had too much love for mma, he preffered bjj and submission, but there was no money in it back then.

@@smesh141 That makes sense. I just loved him because when he was in his prime, was the era where guys were actually becoming legit mixed martial artists, not like today's mma or anything, but they were while being excellent at one aspect - they were starting to ow become serviceable at least in everything else. And yet, in spite of this, Arona was still able to dominate most guys he fought with pretty much one and only one skill set. He had devastating ground and pound, in fact he'd usually just do that rather than go for subs and possibly lose position. However back then Pride refs constantly would stand fighters up very quickly if there was the slightest pause in action. So he was constantly having to work from top to keep it there, or shoot in a bunch of times. His loss to Sokoudjou was really the fight that ended his career. That guy had crazy ko power and just blasted him in a way no one really had, (outside of the Shogun fight, but that was different cuz - like u said - he was injured going into that bout), and he was prolly thinking, fuck this - i don't any more brain damage. Still a great athlete and one of my favorite fighters of all time. I feel privileged to have seen him fight!

Gordon was just talking big shit on Facebook the other day to me personally saying he was the best no gi grappler Alive . I tried to insist to him that aronas resume disagreed with him. I think prime arona, Marcelo, and roger are more than a match for him. I think jacare could beat Ryan too. Maybe in 2-4 years that will change with Gordon being at he peak of his prime but I think he would get sat down by arona in 2000-2005 in no gi

This kind of comparisons don't make sense, competitors from the past didn't have same tools as current generation. If they would start competing at the same time, then we can make comparisons.
