In this highlight video, watch as the ADCC Hall Of Fame nominee Marcelo Garcia takes on the -77 KG division and absolute, battling with the likes of Chris Brennan, Leo Santos, Diego Sanchez, Pablo Popovitch, Ricco Rodriguez, Xande Ribeiro & Shinya Aoki.
Marcelo Garcia, commonly known as ‘Marcelinho’, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Master Fabio Gurgel, who competes for the Alliance BJJ academy. Having won 5 world jiu-jitsu tournaments and 4 times the ADCC (two of the most important tournaments in jiu-jitsu), Garcia is widely considered one of the best grapplers in the world, while his general demeanor made him one of the most beloved athletes by the BJJ community. Marcelo Garcia has also been featured in BJJHeroes top 10 Best Grapplers of All Time list.
Always willing to compete as often as possible, when the Brazilian ADCC trials came up, Marcelo decided to sign up for the famous competition. He fought well and made it to the final, losing it by -1 point (guard pull) against Daniel Moraes. By ADCC rules, he would not make it to the final stage because he did not win the trials, but as Denis Hallman pulled out, he was called in at the last minute as a replacement. Being a huge underdog in the World’s most prestigious tournament he also ended in one of the toughest brackets in the competition, pairing up against Renzo Gracie and Vitor Ribeiro. He defeated both and won the final reaching the pinnacle of Submission Wrestling, with the competition’s earnings Marcelinho offered his father a 2000 Ford Focus to replace his ancient 1984 Volkswagen.
His successful run at both BJJ and Submission Wrestling continued as he won both the World Championships, Submission de Campos and ADCC once again. Having won every major title in submission grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Marcelinho engaged in a new challenge, trying his chance on a career as a fighter in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) joining the Florida MMA academy, American Top Team. Even though Garcia had set his eyes on this new venture, he was still an avid competitor on the major grappling tournaments and always under the Alliance banner.
In 2009 Marcelo opened an academy in New York, starting to distance himself from his MMA Career, dedicating full time to his new academy and his students. Having lost its spark for MMA, he stated openly in an interview in March 2010, that he would no longer compete in MMA, also announcing his decision to return to BJJ, which he did later that year, winning the World Championships once again.
In December 2011 Marcelo Garcia awarded his first two black belts to Josh Waitzkin and Alexander Meadows. The Marcelo Garcia New York Academy has since become one of the top grappling schools in the world with a wide variety of world champions in all belt divisions.

Dean, in one of your king of the cage matches you went from a triangle to armbar, I watched it and copied that sequence and hit that when my old coach Javi Vasquez was watching it got me my blue belt! Back in 06! Thank you

This is how good MG is. He knew the footlock was there but was willing to play "fair" jiu jitsu with the bigger guy until he got pissed. It was as if he thought, "ok so you want to play dirty." Freaking incredible

Tremendous. With the absolute monsters at Alliance to roll with 50 hours a week, you are ready for any grappler alive. His "bjj strength" is ridiculous. I was surprised on how well Diego did at the time, gas for days. Great compilation once again Riccardo 👏 👌

Man I'm surprised he didn't twist Rico's knee ALL the way off. If a dude slammed me like that and I had a solid heel hook in place after, then said dude is getting every ft/lb of torque I can give. Props to Marcelo for his restraint.

100% agree!
Amazing performance by MG in 2005. In addition to his signature xguards, his 2005 game was heavy on armdrags and his passings were still a bit loose as he was primarily hunting for the back, like he did in Adcc 2003. He was still a couple of years away from developing his guillotines and NS chokes. But man, that sneaky wristlock against Popovitch of all people was insane.
Dude, I never knew Diego Sanchez was this high level of a grappler. Damn.

A lot of people don't. He basically abandoned grappling once his coaches convinced him he was a striker. Which he could also do, but not at the level he could grapple. It's a shame really, grappling got him to the game and he was just one of those dudes that could basically be baited into a stand up war. And because he was tough as nails he's taken a lot of punishment over the years. 10-20 years from now at the most, and I bet he's gonna need a full time carer....THAT is the sad reality of it.

@@joenobody5913 he had awesome cardio too… imagine what he could have done in the ufc if he focussed on chain wrestling and mat control, like Bryce Mitchell now, or Khabib, or Maia. Very interesting. I just looked at his record, and he was actually undefeated until he fought 2x NCAA Div 1 wrestlers in a row. That had to have impacted his mindset.

I like Xande Ribeiro, but the claim of "never having the guard passed" is a weak one. The reason being is that, for instance in this case, his guard was basically passed, but he just turtled up and has his back taken instead.

If you can't control your opponent from moving past your hip line, your guard has been passed.

@JamesBrown-

To pass someone’s guard you’ve got to control the position for three seconds
@Sevra87
Жыл бұрын
The whole idea of a guard pass is to pass the legs and hip line in order to pin your opponent’s back flat onto the floor. If you pass the legs but unable to pin them down, then it’s a job half done. So if your opponent turtles that means they have successfully escaped from getting pinned, thus your opponent has prevented the guard pass. If however you take their back then you could argue that you’ve achieved the “pin”. So technically isn’t completely wrong but it is a bit silly to brag about it given that turtle is still a positional concession.
Marcelo a true gentleman of the sport very humble and respectful of his opponent
