Today most would call it just blues but the reality is that "R&B" was a Billboard term for what had been the black or "race" charts starting sometime in the '50s I think. It later became "soul" and eventually back to "R&B." He charted into the '70s on the soul/R&B charts and easily could fit a bill with R&B acts of the '50s. He was always more "uptown" and often matched up with jazz cats as opposed to more raw southern or Chicago acts. All hail the real "Witherspoon" - Jimmy, not "Reese"!

Jimmy was, in my estimation, the greatest male Blues singer of all time. I was fortunate to see him twice. The first time was January 2, 1963, at a jazz club, on North Broadway, in Frisco, with Ben Webster. The second time I saw him was in the mid-70s, at the Golden Bear, in Huntington Beach, with the one and only Jimmy Reed. I love both Jimmys.

Jimmy's version of "Handbags and Gladbags" is still THE best and most moving version of this beautiful song ever and is one of my all-time favourites. RIP, Jimmy .. the world misses you!

Garyguitar: I too love Jimmy's stuff with Robben Ford, infact my favourite blues song of all time is 'NOTHING'S CHANGED' (from the 'SPOONFUL' Album) which has one of the greatest guitar solo's ever. Two great artists!!!

Witherspoon is considered one of the greats in blues/jazz fusion. Blues guys interested in in jazzing up their blues would presumably benefit from checking him out. I say presumably because I am just being introduced to him from the New Yorker best jazz albums list where blues/jazz musicians apparently worship the guy.

Get the double-album "The Spoon Concerts". That's all you'll need. Ben Webster, Gerry Mulligan, Leroy Vinegar (bass). It's all there!

One of the greatest blues albums of all time is "Blue Spoon." You can find it on one CD, with another album by Jimmy, that was recorded in England. The second album has some very good cuts, and some absolute trash but, if you like the blues, you will LOVE "Blue Spoon."
