Wow, what a fantastic performance by a group of legendary virtuosos. Jimmy Smith is the greatest jazz keyboard player of all time as far as I am concerned, not only for his incredible improvising skills, but his unbelievable harmonic and rhythmic genius and his amazing bass lines. I don't know anyone else who plays like him. He was so good it's beyond words.

I know Jimmy Smith had a bad reputation for being real surly with fans...but somehow I must have asked the right way, 'cause he signed an 8x10 promo picture for me summer of '71 in Cleveland. This has zGOT to be a very rare collector's item...

Wow. Thanks for posting this priceless footage. I have the album box set & I never knew there was any footage on video. We still have all time greats in Mr. Burrell & Mr. Haynes with us, but this video clearly shows when Giants once walked the earth.

I've had this video for years but didn't put it together with the box set til last night! .. I got it from an Italian collector and filed it under Jimmy Smith.. And of course now I'm searching for more video from the same performance 🙂

It’s interesting how they have Roy out front, and that even though they’re playing pretty straight ahead ( with people like Clark and Illinois):he’s breaking the time up in his usual way.

No one else, as far as I can tell, who has left a comment has noted that this was the first year (1972) that the Newport Jazz Festival was held in New York. It’s a significant fact. George Wein had to move the festival because a bunch of rowdy, moronic gatecrashers ruined everything the year before, and in doing so alienated town officials. I know because I had a ticket to see the original version of the Allman Brothers band the following night. That was the last year that Wein booked any rock acts.
