This particular Zep song never seems old and outdated. This band was and will always be one of the greatest bands in the history of rock n roll. True masters at their art.

This is somewhat o fa cover, I think the original goes back to Leadbelly. Not being a jerk here, thought I'd share what I've learned. I respect and appreciate the original, but I like what Zep did with it better. Such a primal groove. 🎶😊🎶

@@XI_Daisy_XI It's described as "traditional", meaning its origins are too old to know for sure. However it's thought to be English in origin dating from at least the 15th century. There are many versions and the prisoner usually gets freed after the hangman is bribed. LZ chose to have the guy hanged at the end, even though the hangman had had his silver, gold...... and sister. Hangmen aren't to be trusted!

Love how Led Zeppelin mixes genres, eras, and instruments. Robert has incredible voice control. The song starts off smooth and a little melancholy, then it gets faster and more upbeat with the hope and anxiety of the main character. You actually feel like you’re there with him, wanting to break free and ride many a mile.

I always loved this song. Even more, when I learned that it dates back to the 1600's in some version or another. Iceland , Finland, Russia, Sweden and Norway all had some version of this song in their history.

@Catherine S. Todd I never believe anything from Wiki, or definitely nothing from Gaggle. But i believe the song has Celtic roots, which probably took parts of other and produced the early version. In fact if you look, most music can be tracked back through Celtic, Blues, even Jazz. Just look at the structure and timing. Modern rock is derived from early Celtic.

We learned about gratitude and humility - that so many people had a hand in our success, from the teachers who inspired us to the janitors who kept our school clean... and we were taught to value everyone's contribution and treat everyone with respect. And I want to specially appreciate you for being a big fan. Thanks for your love and nice comments on my post, it means a lot to me and I would like to know more about you and how long you have been a good fan of mine Okay then I will direct you to my gmail address platform where we talk more on my leisure hour. Nothing would make the world a better place than a reunion with Plant, Page and Jones!! No need to call it Led Zep. They can do an all acoustic show, add a full Indian orchestra..anything..rework all the tunes..just play together for the pure joy of it and to make the millions of us fans so happy to see them together. Get Jason Bonham and call it PB&J or something. Plant sounds so great still singing Zeppelin and since he does alot of Zep tunes already in concert ..why not do a tour with the old band? Do it for a charity in every city they play...do it for the 50th anniversary and do it for all of us fans who never got the chance to see them together yet always stuck with them throughout all the great solo tours! We know Page and Jones would do it..now we just need Plant to give the go ahead. I can understand him wanting to move forward and how he's stayed way more relevant than most of his contemporaries by creating great music and not having to do oldies tours..but since he's already doing Zep live.. make the world a better place and bring the happiness we all need by playing with your old mates!!

@@rwsmoke14 Jason sure did an incredible job! No one can ever replace Bonzo, but no one can replace Jason up there behind his dads favorite set, with his tree trunk sticks, playing it from the heart. I get it, Plant doesnt wanna relive the past. But the fans would sure love a tour.... but by now I wonder if Pages ego would get in the way and "he" would be the one to say no? Itll never ever be LZ without Bonzo... I know that's hard on RP

Supposedly I'm quoting an interview with Spin magazine from 2002 (I couldn't find the og source): "But what the fuck for? John Bonham’s kid isn’t as good as John Bonham. Look, I know you’re a journalist, so I’ll go along with this question. I don’t make my living by making a living. My time is so important that I can’t compromise my taste - or my idea of what’s right - simply to match someone else’s view of what’s a good, calculated move. And can you imagine what a lumbering monster that tour would have been? It would have been quite sluttish to come back firing like a bunch of hard rockers." I may be the only Zeppelin fan that agrees wholeheartedly with it and felt unbearably uncomfortable watching the 2007 concert in a movie theatre.
