Jimmy Greenhoff - Stoke City

Jimmy Greenhoff goals
Barnsley born Greenhoff started his career at Leeds United in the early sixties. He scored 33 goals in 136 appearances during seven years at Elland Road before dropping down to the Second Division with Birmingham City in 1968. Tony Waddington bought him back to the top flight, signing him for Stoke a year later. He went on to spend eight seasons at the Victoria Ground, scoring 103 goals in 346 appearances. Highlights along the way included lifting the 1972 League Cup, the 1973 Watney Cup and helping the Potters to two consecutive fifth place finishes and European football. His Stoke career came to an end in unusual circumstances in 1976/97. A freak winter storm blew the roof of the Butler Street Stand and the club were forced to cash in on key players to foot the repair bill. He joined Man United for £120,000 and went on to score 36 goals in 123 games over the next five seasons at Old Trafford. In his later years he turned out for Crewe Alexandra, Toronto Blizzard, Port Vale and Rochdale befroe retiring in 1984.

What a player,Greenhoff would walk into most teams best sides. His sale to Manure led to us spending decades outside of the top league.Look at the players we had then-------Ritchie,Conroy,Salmons,Mahoney,Pejic,Smith,Banks and of course the best player I`ve seen in a Stoke shirt,Alan Hudson.Great memories.I wish we could have these players in a Stoke shirt today, then we`d be a force to be reckoned with.

Neckender The sale of Jimmy to united led to Stoke spending decades outside of the top of the league?? You really need to go back on your medication. . Ye were nowhere near the top of the league when ye had him for all those years, so what did his leaving have to do with ye still being nowhere near the top of the league. He wanted at least a chance of silverware during his career.

Memories and a bloody nightmare when we woke up to the news that an un-insured Stoke City needed to sell off its best players because the Butler Street Stand Roof had taken off in high winds. A great side took away from us overnight and God knows where we would be today if that had not happened as it took years in the lower leagues to rebuild.

Jimmy and Brian greenhoff are my grandmothers cousins (r.i.p Brian). I believe they grew up in worsbrough Barnsley.....why they were never spotted by Barnsley is beyond me. My grandmother and grandfather either lived with them or lived in a house owned by Jimmy's dad? I'm a bit unsure there.....their dad owned a pub in Barnsley and my grandad still tells the story of Don revie holding a meeting with Jimmy and his dad in the tap room hahaha .... Don't know whether it was to sign him for Leeds or when Jimmy wanted to leave Leeds. But yep the greenhoffs are a joy to watch and makes me quite proud .... I mean I only managed to get to semi pro hahahahahaha 🤣.....

When he went to Man Utd with the Doc' doing a surgical wholesale clearout, dropping down a Division helped him rebuild, anyway Greenhoff the Elder played like he had been there years. Sadly the Doc played away & got the red card. Dave Sexton came & ruined the Docherty's well crafted side. But another Scot would show a bit of promise..
