Jimmer Fredette's Journey From Top to Bottom

Спорт

Jimmer Fredette was the biggest star in college basketball at BYU. He was a top 10 draft pick in the NBA. Then, he was a benchwarmer. And now, he's in the D-League, trying to claw his way back onto the big stage in front of tiny crowds with the Westchester Knicks. In this VICE Sports exclusive, Jimmer and his family take us through the journey to this point and we get a behind-the-scenes look at his life out of the spotlight.

His wife is so pissed that he isn't making 10 million a year. Just image that playing basketball is your job... What a sweet life. NBA, D league or Europe... You're getting paid to play basketball. That's a blessing man.

Doubt she would want to leave her life in the united states plus if he goes alone u really think she would be faithful if hes gone for so long and she would want comfort not be alone every single day wishing her husband was with her

Don't know why people make this retarded argument. If you make d1 basketball and are one of the top prospects, your goal isn't to make money. Its about living out your childhood dream and being a star in the NBA.

Jarif Ahmed The point is have some perspective. There are much more deserving people than Federette who suffer much worse. Federette is in the upper 1% of income earners in the US. Anyone making over a million dollars a year is very wealthy. There are single moms struggling to make rent. There are homeless vets with PTSD. There are school teachers that make 30k a year. Keep it in perspective. Jimmer's life is better than 99% of people who have ever lived.

Eh, he'd need to do more than that. He's an undersized 2 guard with not quickness and athleticism. If he learned to pass the ball and run an offense besides chucking up 3's and take it to the hole every time he get's the ball, he's not going anywhere. Even playing in Europe would be hard since he doesn't play well fundamentally. He needs to completely revamp his game or he'll be working a day job in a few years.

Jimmer is to soft and doesn't have the confidence necessary to play at the NBA level. Maybe I'm wrong about him being soft but he defiantly doesn't have the confidence. So many interviews he's so pc about everything at some point he needs to just realize "we win these games because I am bad ass" That's the only difference between steph curry and Jimmer.

The D-League is not the minor league for the NBA. The NCAA is its farm system. Additionally, NBA scouts and recruits players from Europe way more than from the D-League. D-League is a graveyard for 1st round picks that didn't work out, or for guys trying to get back into shape to join a roster.

  • @SFO14

magnumxlpi Again, sticking to basketball. How many players in the NBA played D1? *You get 4 years in college* How many players who played D1 didn't actually go the full 4 years? "One and done" sound familiar? Kentucky's program is a prime example. Sources speculate Anthony Davis made upwards of $300K for attending one year of college at UK from boosters and other back-channels. The only reason players even have to be one year removed from HS (if you're a US-born player) is because of shoe deals. Nike, Adidas, etc. have contracts with the colleges and the players have to wear them and promote them "for free" for at least one year. Go attend some AAU tournaments and see how many sharks are in the stands. Biggest fucking racket in all of sports.

There are/have been plenty of great College b-ball players that don't fit in the NBA game. I think Fredette fits into this category unless he finds the perfect NBA spot. When he came into the League, I thought his best case scenario would be J.J. Redick-like. Redick is bigger, stronger and a slightly better shooter. Can you imagine being a Mormon in the NBA?! It must be really tough to go from being an NBA draft hero to a D-Leaguer looking for a 10 day contract.

  • @domais68

The NBA is not Mormon-friendly. By that, I mean that most NBA players like to cuss, gamble, volume screw as many women as possible and go nuts having fun. Players are young, rich and enjoy all forms of excess. That is not the Mormon way. Mormons don't drink caffeine. They are conservative and sheltered. What's normal for most in the NBA was likely a massive shock to Fredette. (BYU to the NBA!) Those life shocks affect everything, including results on the court. I'm all for freedom of religion so, if someone is Mormon, I have no problem with it. However, unless they have some special coping mechanism which allows them to look the other way on just about everything, they will probably struggle. On a related note, do you think NBA players are excited when they're drafted by the Jazz? No, they're miserable and want to leave ASAP because Utah's values are not important values to most NBA players. No offense to anyone who is Mormon. I thought this was obvious!?

+james lachs The guy has wanted to be in the NBA since he was a teenager, if not before. I'd think it'd be kind of hard to not know what you're getting yourself into the closer you get to it. Especially for a player who was as hyped at university as Fredette was. His one-dimensional game is what did him in. Personally, I don't think he's really that much of an improvement over Jason Kapono.

  • @domais68

I guarantee he wasn't! BYU has an "honor" code built on informing on your peers. ESPN has called it, "the Snitch School." Jimmer would be risking everything if he even shook too long at the urinal. No offense to Mormons, that's just the way it goes. I grew up with a devout Mormon and he's the first to admit that this is the way Mormons keep their peers from drinking caffeine, wearing make-up, dancing, having their hair too long etc. Sad but true.

JJ Reddick plays solid defense, can create hit own shot, and it doesn't help that he's fundamentally sound since he played under coach K at Duke. Jimmer is the Tim Tebow of basketball. Until he shakes his ego and actually puts in the work to be a good player, he won't sniff the NBA.

Pinoyako11705 Not at all, but it's a ridiculous statement either way. Fredette was definitely worth drafting and taking a chance on. If you asked Skip about Lillard pre draft he'd likely tell you the same thing.

BAZ00KA J0 Don't disagree at all and I knew he would have problems as he is a PG size but doesn't have the handle or quickness for the position and he's too small for SG. Still, to say he wasn't worth drafting at all is ridiculous. Skip shouldn't be on TV and his sports knowledge is suspect at best.

Jimmer's problem is the same as a lot of players who star in college and flop in the NBA. For him to be effective he needs to be the focal point of the offense. It's not that he isn't talented it's just that on a court full of elite players, he doesn't know how to contribute as a roll player. Dominating the D league was great for his confidence but kind of did him a disservice as well because what he needs to get better at is finding ways to score within the flow of an offense when he only gets 10-15 minutes a night. I wish him well but I think his destiny is in Europe.

I mean honestly all he can do is shoot, I'm not surprised he faltered. Sure he was good at college hoops cause college ball isn't nearly as athletic as NBA ball. He can't play defense at the professional level because he's not quick enough, he doesn't have good enough court vision to be a pure point guard, and he can't drive to the basket and score cause he's not athletic enough for the NBA. When you're a 6'2" scoring oriented guard, you better have some stellar perimeter defense and either awesome passing skills or supreme athletic ability, otherwise you're doomed.

+Aiden Rae i agree. in my opinion, his main problem is his attitude/intellect. all you hear in this video is how the nba is cool and a goal, how the old days were cool, and how the d-league is not cool. never about reasons, things he did wrong, things he needs to improve on the court. it's obvious he still wants to be the hero and he also just plays heroball to this day, while not realizing he flatout sucks by NBA standards. if he realized that, got his head straight, turned humble and work hard to change his game to find a spot in the NBA, i'm sure he could've made it. for example, calderon is unathletic aswell, can't drive/score 2's, can't defend. but he can handle, he can pass, hit the 3 - all at a good enough level to easily outweigh his negatives on the court. that's the only spot jimmer can realistically aim for, but he never did. he has to develop pg skills and vision or else he will rot in the d-league forever. unfortunately, i don't see him changing and making it in the nba ever. he should just go to europe and play a good role there. it should fit his style a lot more and he can be the man again. and his wife might enjoy the glory again, as well.

+Aiden Rae Yes your correct thats all he can do is shoot. Hes like a steve kerr john paxson etc. Hes just a spot up shooter. He would have been in the nba if he wanted to play that role but he doesnt want to he wants to be the man. Which will not work.Thats why NBA teams dont want him cos he thinks all nba teams are stupid.

lmao so stupid, so many NBA All Stars cant play defense, Harden, Isaiah Thomas, Lillard, Kyrie, Mudiay, Dennis schroder, everyone I listed is trash defensivly just look at their plus minus if you dont believe me. hell even Seth Curry is in the league and all he can do is shoot. If Jimmer was Black he would be in the league lets be honest. He is a spot up sniper from 3 that could easily come off the bench on any team and get some buckets without turning the ball over. You say so much bullshit, I mean who is a true point gaurd in the league right now.. Chris paul, Rondo, Lonzo Ball? lmao thats about it..all the other elite point gaurds in the nba are scoring point gaurds, which jimmer wouldnt even play the point anyway. At the end of the day he doesn't pass the eye test because hes white. Not for anything else. It's a sad, cold world.

Josh your right all those guys you named are not good defenders, but when you compare them to jimmer they look like world class defenders..jimmer looks like he doesn’t even try on defence..it’s one thing to be bad at defence but when you put zero effort into it you will never make it in the nba..and I guess your theory about him being white doesn’t apply to Tyler Cavanaugh,Miles Plumlee,Joe Harris,Nik Stauskas,Frank Kaminsky,Cody Zeller ,Ron Baker ,Luke Kornet just to name a few because all of them are white and are in the nba but they won’t let jimmer in the nba because he’s white, that makes alot of sense
