I’ve never been more proud to be from Rochester NY than this exact moment, and I probably never will be again
“At least 12 places have them” as a rochestarian, I can guarantee there at least 35-40
I’m from Rochester, NY and live in Rochester, MN (and even more coincidentally, work at Mayo Clinic). My worlds just collided all over the place
Rochester NY: at least we're not Syracuse
Had a garbage plate last time I was in Rochester and Ive thought about them once a week since. That was six years ago.
Thank you Jim for sharing Rochester's wonderfully unhealthy creation. The number of places you can get a plate are actually in the hundreds, but Nick's is the true original and I'm glad you gave them props.
ROCHESTER!!! That’s my home city! Best place for a garbage plate in Rochester: Dogtown. Cozy spot off Monroe Ave
"I really like it when you act in movies" - Conan, 2020
Always smile when Rochester makes it mainstream every now and then
Lived in Rochester NY for over 8 years .... best drunk food ever!!!
"Have you ever heard of this, Andy?" "Just when he tells about it." Lol.
Thanks for putting us on the map, Jim! We love our Garbage Plates here!!! Don’t knock it ‘til you try it Conan. Btw Jim, we’re starting our own clinic for Garbage Plate related illnesses in Rochester. Next time you stop by you’ll have your own personal physician to check your vitals right after you finish your plate. lol And personally, for all those interested in trying it, I think the best garbage plate combination is cheeseburgers, home fries, Mac salad, meat sauce, onions, and ketchup. Enjoy!
As one who lives in Rochester I can confirm every word of this is true. Garbage Plates: the glory and the shame of the Flower City!
I am from Rochester and I miss these dearly. What he doesnt tell you, is that you can change the meat out, some ppl do burger patties instead of hots. Some do baked beans and homefries or homefries and mac salad. So many combos.
"Garbage plate" was originally a nickname. Nick Tahou called it an "everything plate" and didn't like it when the food he served at his restaurant was referred to as "garbage". I imagine he got over it when they started to sell really well. They are much more appetizing after you've been drinking for a few hours.
“Have you heard of this Andy?” “Only when he talks about it.” “It was the 70s!” 😂
He’s not lying. My sister went to college in Rochester and I had many of those as hangover food. Worked well! And it’s delicious!
“Fancy cheese” 😂😂😂
I live in Rochester, NY. It is amazing! I was not born here and moved here in late 20’s. It is typically served with home fries, mac salad, two cheeseburgers or hot dogs all smothered in a hot meat sauce. I add onions, ketchup (catsup for people who are always wrong), mustard.
“I still haven’t recovered” 😂😂
Lol, love how he said he “still hasn’t recovered from it”. During College I went with some of my friends from SUNY Brockport to go on a pilgrimage to Rochester to the then originator of The Garbage Plate, Nick Tahoe’s. Nowadays in Brockport, Jimmy Z’s has won a local award 🥇 for theirs. I only had the one from Tahoe’s and it was ok. The guys in our crew enjoyed it. It seems built for guys inherent need for a lot of volume of food at a modest price. It feels like something concocted to address a hangover. Just a guess. Anyways, this was fun to watch play out in the local community as people were answering his questions about what to eat and where, etc on both the local press and Social media. He seems like a good guy. That fishing 🎣 in the pool 🏊 thing sounds odd, yet stranger things have happened. My first fishing was with my Dad near my grandpa’s place further downstate. A proper creek outdoors. Coffee Can of worms we searched for early that morning. Dad put the worms on the hook for me, I was maybe 7 or 8 max, he took a lot of the ick factor out of it for me which I always appreciated. Anyways, fun clip! Thanks for the morning laugh!
I remember one of those back in '91, drunk on a Friday night/Saturday morning as a student at U of R. I haven't recovered yet either.
Im from around the area of Rochester, often times things are substituted with whatever is on hand but jim got the basics right and its a lovely dish people pretend to be better than. Theres many places to get them, each a bit different.
Lol I live in Rochester and anytime I see something about in I’m outside media 9 times out of 10 they are talking about garbage plates
Being from Buffalo... literally hours away from Rochester... the garbage plate is great! So is Jim’s new special which I saw in Buffalo yesterday! Good show!
I met Jim at Acme Comedy club many years ago in the twin cities - he was so cool and down to earth. Made me laugh until I cried, and truly a humble man. I remember it clearly over a decade later. Thanks Jim:)
Conan is my favorite comedian/late night/overall talk show host and it makes me so happy to know that he know my city exists now. YAY ROCHESTER
Now I'm going to have to reconsider Rochester and the 70's.
That's how I describe a garbage plate to visitors of Rochester....a picnic on a plate. When you grow up there you learn to love it. Thx for visiting Jim.
“I am white trash” Lmao!!😂😂😂
Always a treat to see Conan interview Jim Gaffigan.
His best role was as Roy in That 70's Show.
Can't wait to see Jim this year, always wanted to go to a live show :D
I can confirm the garbage plate is amazing
Three of the greatest comedians sitting together. This is the best thing ever
3:50 I live for the small moments when Andy does a chuckle :D
I clicked on here because I was expecting a story of Minnesota, but Andy, Jim, and Conan bantering together is a treat I crave far more than any garbage plate.
This brother is hilarious. Him and Andy would riff off each other extremely well.
sweet! Rochester NY made Conan via Jim Gaffigan! Conan, YOU NEED TO TRY IT....just had one today!
I could listen to them for hours
Jim got it SO close. The Garbage Plate originated at Nick Tahou’s 100 years ago, and there have been many delicious imitators since then. It’s your choice of two of the following: Mac salad, home fries, or baked beans; then choose a meat, typically two cheeseburgers or hot dogs, covered with mustard, chopped onions and meat hot sauce, and finished with Frank’s Red Hot sauce! Great at the end of a night of heavy drinking or anytime!
Welcome Back, Coco!!! I was eagerly waiting for you to come back!!! Was getting bored & jealous of other talk show coming back:)
The 70’s were great!
The glorious garbage plate. I believe the venue remains indecently the same as "Henrietta Hots" definitely creates the classier and rosier couch potato, where over the years the ironing board is recycled into a LOTR reference crafted from Utah.
Jim Gaffigan is Andy in everyway possible. It's like having 2 Andy's on Conan
Agreed about cheddar cheese being called fancy. And yes I caught fish in pools post-70s. The Midwest is great.. but Jim is truly wonderful
Well, now, someone in Rochester needs to invite Conan over
I lived in the same town as him! Love his comedy.
**Nixon's presidency** *_"iT wAs ThE 70's"_*
The 70s were dark times.
Ok finally my two favorite people in one video thank you so much
Jim looks great! Like he just looks happier and his hair looks great and I love his glasses.
I love Jim Gaffigan. Truly a funny man.
That was really funny interview. What a great guest Jim is..
Gotta love Jim
Jim is hilarious in his story telling.
Grew up in rochester and I want to add a few things, it is usually home fries, (cold) mac salad, 2 cheeseburgers and meat hot sauce. Now a garbage plate can be any combination of things depending on where your getting it from. Almost every restaurant you go to in rochester will have this dish on their menu. Fun fact is only one place can call it the garbage plate because they literally trademarked the name. So it's generally referred to here as just a "plate"
Love that place go there all the time
I cant wait to start using "it was the 70s" as an excuse for everything.
3:53 was that Andy’s subtle Evil ass laugh? lol
It was a great show in Rochester! Best birthday present ever!
Rochester, MN mentioned on Conan ...never thought I'd see that.
Jim & Andy look like brothers 😄
Highly recommended! Garbage plates can come with Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, white hots, red hots or steak. I miss not living in Rochester but have learned to replicate the "garbage plate". Also the meat sauce topping is a Rochester thing and not tied entirely to the garbage plate, a lot of burger places up there use it for burgers, hots and fries. Google Nick Tahous hot sauce for a recipe.
Oh my gah! I love this guy! So silly. He just makes me laugh so hard all the time.
Jim and Andy look and sound like brothers lmao
I'm from that area and I LOVE garbage plates. I live in South Carolina now and we have a local place that serves them and they're fantastic.
My parents had that menu item once when they were in college in Rochester, NY in the mid 1980’s. It was a cheap menu item that college students could afford. They apparently haven’t been the same since.
I was born and raised in Rochester. After a night of heavy drinking (most Hots joints are open after the bars close) there's nothing better than a Plate! You can ask for warm beans and they'll throw them on the grill for a minute, but the standard plate is just mac/homefries with 2 dogs or cheeseburgers (no buns), mustard - onions - meat hot sauce.
I went to RIT... been here, many times!
Jim and Andy are SO similar 😂😂😂
Loved him on That '70s Show.
Love Jim! So funny 😄
Garbage Plate connoisseur here. I can confirm they are amazing!
Conan forever!
"It was the 70's " Hahahahahahahaha! !!
Jim, we love you.❤💕
Legendary
Come on up to Rochester & try one, Conan!!!!
Gaffigan is hilarious. Having two epic comedians in one room is a sight to see.
Jim Gaffigan is the man. hes funny as hell
Legend !
I’m from Rochester, NY, and the fact that it is known for the garbage plate is pretty appropriate. Glad to be living elsewhere now!
“and it just took off from there.” said it like he believed it lol
I love the Rochester, Minnesota reference. I live in Minneapolis and "Mayo Clinic," is every person's answer for what's in Rochester? LOL
As someone from Rochester I can attest that it's very good
lolol...loooove jim. he is so funny.
I love Jim.
Ahhh how I miss the garbage plate. I moved out to San Diego from Rochester years ago and its one of the things I miss the most. Hey @Team Coco, next time you go to Speckles you should bring one for me!
Garbage Plates are AWESOME!!!! Also the origin was simply if I'm not mistaken is that someone came into (which ever place invited the Garbage plate) right after a huge rush and wanted some food. The place only had what goes into a garbage plate left in the kitchen, threw it on a plate, and served it the guy and the rest is history.
It's like watching 2 Andy Richter and 1 Conan
Andy is always fast with the comeback roast.
Jim Gaffigan The Legend
Genuine dude!
Conan The Legend
Love Gaffigan!
never heard of him but this was hilarious
Jim is great~!
Shook by the swimming pool fishing. 😂
Rochester Native here. It’s tasty. Gotta try it.
