Just because you have not seen him wrestle does not mean he has not wrestled. I know for a fact he has wrestled, cause I remember multiple guys saying he was wrestling guys in the gym, while he was training for UFC fights. And yes they meant professional wrestling, cause they said he was showing them how it worked, and they could not believe it hurt as much as it did. So he was clearly at least doing it for fun.

This match was a pro wrestling match in every way possible. Punk even though he beat Darby makes both their stocks rise in a match like this. Punk talks about his seniors who gave him knowledge in the business like Terry funk and Harley Race all the time. He’s a real student of the game, don’t let that ROH background or his build fool you, Punk is a real wrestler and he did fantastic after 7 years off. I’m really excited to see punk in AEW more often, hell if he has another amazing match like this again I might be alright with him winning the AEW belt for a few months

Very true, I probably should edit my comment about ROH. Most of the time somebody comes from ROH and the first thing you hear is these people saying “no charisma, too small, indyriffic, etc.” meant it in no disrespect to ROH. They put a spotlight many amazing talents over the years some who got their due like Punk and Bryan and others who weren’t so lucky. What I meant to say is how this guy is a wrestler through and through from a promo to his work to his personality he is fantastic and always has been.

The best part of it was that it made logical sense! All throughput the match Punk was trying to hit that GTS, and Darby knew that if he hits it, it's game over, so he kept on reversing it and trying trying score a pin. Also the callbacks to Bret vs Sean Waltman and the GTS spot calling back to Cena vs Punk MitB 2011 and Punk doing the Undertaker 'sit up' calling back to Taker vs Punk 2013, just a way to show that Punk is an experienced vet calling on his old experiences in the ring!!

Darby and Cody's matches were solid too. I think I just liked the story being told here. There was no heat between the two. It was a contest between equals psychologically. Punk vs Allin was easily my favourite match of the night. My personal preference for wrestling is the slower, more methodical based matchups. I loved Punk’s work here. Some people said he was “rusty”, but I just saw a guy working a classic style. Lots of grappling and holds, working away at the body, it made sense. This was great stuff from Punk, he really is a ring general and the last of a dying breed. AEW talent would be smart to learn a lot from him whilst he’s around. I look forward to seeing him work this new style against other AEW talent.

  • @keithyw

this was an old school pro-wrestling match. meaning it was a pro-wrestling match. i'm glad bryan mentioned the Bret vs 123 kid RAW match. some other people have pointed out that Darby has picked up a few 123 Kid's moves. but this match was paced well. i saw the comments before i got to see the match and some people talked about the slowness or Punk picking up the pace later in finally getting his step back. no, Punk did Bret vs 123 Kid, which could have been foreshadowed when Punk wore Bret's t-shirt on Rampage during commentary. Punk controlled the pace because he's the veteran and he lets Darby get his wilder offense in at the right time. Match was slow because they wanted to build towards the finish. Punk got moves in that people no longer see like just a basic body slam, going to the mat with headlocks, the double bridge, etc. This was a deep wrestling match because it told another story in the story. Punk had hinted that he wanted to avoid all of Darby's dives because they looked like they hurt beforehand. But guess what? He got hit with all those dives. In the post match interview, Punk further puts Darby over by saying he doesn't want to get in the ring again with him. What I liked was that Punk not only dictated the pace but he wasn't afraid if certain moves didn't get a reaction because he allowed things to breathe and build. He knew that big moves that would get a pop. It wasn't some indy goof just doing everything because he's scared that he's not getting a "holy shit!" moment every 5 seconds. this is definitely a veteran who understands crowd psychology. Also, one thing he did was play to the crowd and even Darby picked up on that a bit. When I watched Britt Baker vs Kris Statlander, you could tell Britt wants to be a heel so badly but she doesn't know exactly how. She doesn't communicate with the crowd. She does the heel moves in kicking Statlander's head in and the crowd is kinda booing. But she could go nuclear heat by telling the crowd to "shut up!" or giving them the finger. Anything. That connection with the crowd is a huge part missing in many of these indy wrestler matches. Or if they do, it's a stupid moment that last too long. Lastly, there was actual selling here. Not a ton but the times they sold, they gave room for the drama/match to breathe. The selling is absolutely missing from wrestling. That's the key. The real drama in matches. When someone is down on the ground and he's NOT responding to the crowd but hurting from offense rather than popping up and going, "Okay XYZ move is done, let's go to the next one." Overall, for my money, this was the best AEW match I've seen thus far. It definitely was the match of the night for me. I felt engaged the entire time and I was invested in both guys. I could appreciate each moment and certain moves did stand out because they let those moments hang for a good second.

People were really asking why there was so much grappling in a professional WRESTLING match? 🤣 People forget that before every match had 1000 flips in them the wrestlers used to actually attempt to make the matches look like legitimate combat sport fights. Now everyone wrestles like they are in AAA or CMLL and so they seem less special. The high spot matches were better when you didn't see them that often and they were used as a special attraction (E.G the WCW Cruiserweight division, and the TNA X-Division) now almost every match it spot fest and everyone wrestles the same.

It wasn't 20 superkicks. It wasn't 10 v triggers. It was 2 GTS... One that hit, but Darby was out of reach for the pin. And the other was a clean hit for the pin. Classic wrestling match. indeed. when JR was spitting facts in that interview about how AEW is a spotfest where everyone on a daily basis dives off the top rope on a bunch of friends and foes alike who wait to catch them - all the AEW wrestlers got upset and flamed JR - but Darby agreed with JR. he was the only one. its clear he likes real wrestling more than the spot fest - and punk can and clearly did - teach him that. hes a great teacher for those willing to learn. and as i said, from what darby said on twitter about JRs comments - its clear Darby does want to learn - sadly, the same cant be said about most of AEW roster. I think the young bucks will never want to learn to actually wrestle - in fact they probably wish they could somehow burry punk in a match like they did FTR but hopefully he has enough creative control via his expensive deal to protect himself from this bad booking the Bucks and Jericho do (rip MJF, one of the biggest rising stars, a super serious worker, destroyed by jerichos comedy segments.)

It feels like it’s been years since we seen an actual wrestling match and it came from AEW. Also if you don’t remember 123 Kid vs Bret don’t worry it’s on KZread.

I knew Corny would like this. The match told a story, both wrestlers had a clear strategy they were going for. The back targeting stuff was on point. The dynamic of the quick, young Darby using his explosive nature to try and keep Punk off his feet, while the older, more experienced, but ring rusty Punk was trying to keep things slowed down while looking for his younger, more risk taking opponent to make a mistake that he could take advantage of. Really good stuff. Both guys looked great. Punk looks like he never left, and Darby looked exciting to an audience that likely has a lot of new eyes who don't watch the show normally. As for the count out spot, I generally think of it being the guy who got tossed out resting as much as he can before jumping in to break the count. In this case, Darby just took a finish, so he'd want to recover as much as possible from the blow.

Match was great and was the type of match I grew up watching. I just wonder how long the AEW fans are going to be okay with this style from Punk. Because I do think this is going to be his style from now on. A slower, more grounded style based on his admiration and love for the 80s territory days.

This was the only wrestling match in the PPV, and most of it was essentially a homage to Bret Hart vs 123 Kid in 1994, which, in itself, was a really great match. If anyone even had any doubts about CM Punk's in-ring quality, this match shatters them rather quickly. I don't think Darby Allin would've looked as good as he did if he was facing someone else.

I knew Jim was going to love this match. It had an old school feel from start to finish, the pace of the match was perfect, the spots made sense and you had some technical wrestling involved too. I might be in the minority but this was my favorite match on the card. Really impressed with Darby, his performance in that match was exceptional. With the new wave of talent, can’t wait to see what they both do next.

Omg, Iv'e been patiently waiting for Jim, and Brian to review this entire show. Ngl, it was pretty awesome. This match was decent, but it did start off kinda slow, and picked up towards the end. Glad Punk won, but I do wanna see Darby in a title match soon, maybe against Miro. Also Punk had the buff/thick upper body like Kylo Ren. He looks slimmer with a shirt on, lol.

2:06 LOL CM Punk at 218lbs while he was fighting at 170lbs. I think UFC spoiled the pro wrestling fantasy of the inflated weights. 218lbs is about what a 6'4" Jon Jones walks in the Octagon at when fighting at LHW.

This was definitely the match of the night. I was at the show live and the live crowd was into every second of this match. I have to say that in general, this show had more matches that resemble true pro wrestling than almost any other show they put on.
