Mick also had the luxury of good timing when the Mankind gimmick started to turn silly with the sock and everything because it was in the midst of the all time record highs for the wrestling business, especially the WWF. They were so white hot that, 99% of the time, it didn't matter how silly they got. That's another point presented by Jim himself in the past: "When you're hot, you can't fuck it up, you can be as silly as you want to."

He's fantastic, only thing that gets under my skin is he's incapable of taking responsibility for himself but he insists everyone else should be accountable. Just look at the tuxedo match comment.. 2 managers doing it is goofy, but me (a manager) doing it with another manager is okay because we hate each other. That's just a small example, if you listen regularly you'll see what I mean, especially now I've said it if you hadn't before.

I disagree about Gillberg - as I saw it as being similar to Nacho Man and the Huckster. It was mocking the competition, saying "our guys are better than this horseshit". Shark Boy in his Stone Cold phase was just aping for the sake of cheap heat. But yeah - Hurricane is Good Funny, for the most part, because of how they handled it and how it got across. The time he squeaked a victory on the Rock was a great moment. The bits between him and the Rock were fantastic.

The original stinkface should count as 'good' comedy if it's even comedy at all; it's a big 400lb man using force and ritually humiliating the victim. It served as a precursor to a banzai drop, often. As a heel, it's a good heat-drawing move, as being a dick to the babyface, and as a babyface, it's a great way for the heel to get some comeuppance without killing their heat or aura because they can still cheat to win and then get that as some measure of comeuppance. It was when it became 'a thing' and they had women's stinkface matches and stuff like that that it crossed the line into stupid. the Kiss My Ass club segments, much as I hated them, are similar, it's the heel ritually humiliating the babyface, making you want to see them get their comeuppance. Much like the Lawler "kiss my foot" match back in the early 90s. Shark Boy in general I would say goes in the category with the TL Hoppers and the others that Jim talks about - it may be a silly gimmick, but Sharky could work, and was a pretty decent X-Division guy for years. Curry Man goes in the same category. The gimmick was hokey but everybody and their mom knows Daniels is a hell of a worker and he made the hokey character into a credible wrestler, so as you can do the kind of thing Jim talks about here, talk about how he's unpredictable and strange and we don't know why he's acting and dressing like this but he's not to be underestimated as a fighter. Sandow as the stunt double was a great one because it got over as him doing the comedy bits, but it also slow-built to an ending along the Virgil-turns-on-Dibiase lines, where it became clear Miz was taking advantage of Sandow and though he was doing hokey fake bumps, you could buy that it was because Miz was either buying him off to do so and he was so concerned for his job that he literally mimicked everything (i.e. Miz is a Dibiase-style heel) or Miz is forcing him into it (i.e. Miz is an abusive heel). They then just fucked up the face turn.

The stinkface works when the opponent is receiving it like Rikishi. Humiliating enough that you’d rather take a tombstone from the Undertaker than to have that. It doesn’t work when it comes from an attractive wrestler. The meaning of the move changes completely and it becomes something to watch rather than a sight to turn your head away from. Much like seeing The Great Khali do the Sweetchin Music on someone but lacking the fundamentals to pull it off and not looking right doing it on his opponent.

Well that depends would it kill culkin, make him bleed an unholy fountain like some of flair or dusty matches, make only a small cut or it being a rib and it was a gimmicks blade that wasn't even a danger.

As a comic book dude myself. Surprisingly I had no problem with the hurricane. Unless they showed him actually displaying superpowers. You just treat it the way Jim said they used the boogeyman. Sure we all know he isn't a superhero. But his crazy ass believes it. Would like to know his opinion on the trillionair ted vignettes the wwe put out. Jim Cornette always has said that Mick Foley and Lisa Marie Varon were too nice for the Wrestling business. And Glenn Jacobs too. Those 3 but I have to add a fourth one. Duane Gill. His whole character was a mockery of Goldberg. Gillberg was doomed to fail but somehow Gillberg made it work. And I am not sure what Jim Cornette would think of him because of his no nonsense attitude which I agree with. But Gillberg is an exception because of how nice he is. He was happy to be a jobber as long as he was in the ring. He was there I guess when both HHH and Undertaker debut. Not as Gillberg because that came later. He just had so much love and respect for the guys and the business. Funny how Kane and Victoria AKA Lisa Marie Varon are so different than the characters they play. When Mick Foley first came in I didn't know what to think of him but later I could tell he was a good guy. Eddie Guerrero was really nice too.

It was "funny" but had a bit of edge at the moment because no one knew (at the time) if anyone would be hurt. Bad funny: A dumbass holding AN INVISIBLE GRENADE and everyone in the ring giving the bump to the fake grenade. It's stupid, it's an example of the exact reason I stopped watching wrestling. Because they made it into a shit-show.

I know, that humour is subjective, but none of the things mentioned were funny to me. I loved the hurricane, but he never was funny to me. You know, like a clown, or something^^ What made me laugh were the things Rock did, or Jericho. I also loved the "tea time" with Santino Marella and Sheamus. Those were funny to me. But guys like Sharkboy, Hurricane and the like, guys like Orange Cassidy are not funny, they are good workers. I can't laught at them - or with them, since I am admiring their work. Same goes with those guys who wrestle invisible men, or blow up dolls. Those are, in my opinion, masters of their craft, since they are literally wrestling a broom and manage to sell for those things. I Imagine that is a pretty hard thing to do. This may be one of the things I disagree with Jim Corentte on. Yes, they expose the business, but they still are good, at what they do. And that I can appreciate

I love Corny, but comedy wrestling does absolutely nothing to hurt wrestling in today's world. In 1985? Yes, definitely destructive to that era of wrestling. 2018? Please. At some point, you have to be able to wink at the audience a bit and acknowledge that they know what's what. The world is so much less naive now. Not just about wrestling but about television in general. The cat is so far out of the bag it shouldn't be a concern. You can watch a dick plex on one show and enjoy a good, old-fashioned world championship blood match on another show and absolutely nothing has changed for you.

Honestly the only issue with that way of thinking is that while its true there can be comedy in wrestling, the issue is that 1. Instead of it being natural it feels more forced and hokey which for a medium where you are trying to show off that these people could hold their own in a fight can be problematic especially when you start associating them with comedy more and more to the point you cant take them as a serious fighter when needed and 2. There needs to be a boundary for this because time and time again people have gotten too far for their own good that's why gimmicks like oklahoma, kerwin white and so on were able to be shown on tv.
