Thank you Beth. All explanations about Jhanas are welcomed because there´s a lot of doubts and confusions about this subject. 🙏

Hi, I was wondering what this "mental object" is. I was thinking that we need to continually focus on, say, Russell's paradox or the Finitude of human life. But a friend of mine, who was on retreat with you in Slovakia this winter, told me that to concentrate on a "mental object" really means to concentrate on some pseudo-hallucination that appears when you concentrate, for example, on some light formation. I think it would require more clarification as to what you mean by "mental object".

Hello, light is quite a normal side effect of deepening practice. You could take a look at my video on different types of light. If the anxiety persists then please feel free to book an appointment with me through my website so that we can discuss your practice in more detail.

Thank you, Beth! I wanted to know about two things. One, is the sixth Jhana (Boundless Consciousness) the same as what people describe the individual consciousness merging with the cosmic consciousness or experiencing the 'oceanic feeling'? And two, when it happens, is the feeling scary?

Hello, I cannot be sure what those people are talking about without discussing their practice with them in some detail. However we may get a sense of absorbing into something expanded/boundless/pure/oceanic in any of the jhanas, not only the 6th. It is normal that people experience some fear due to being unfamiliar with the experience, but once the jhana is stable it is not scary.

@@bethupton1286 Thank you so much for the answer! I guess, what I was referring to is the sudden awakening experience that many meditators feel. The feeling where consciousness keeps expanding and gets merged into an ocean of lights (as they describe it). It last several seconds and sometimes more, and is a life-changing event. Mystics like Ramana Maharishi, Gopi Krishna, Theresa of Avila experienced it. In India, it's called Kundalini awakening. I was wondering if all advance meditators in every tradition have this experience. But I think, your answer cleared my doubts. The sixth Jhana may not be the same thing as this.
