"Jerusalem Ridge"
Jerusalem Ridge is a bluegrass fiddle tune made popular by legendary fiddler and Kentucky native Kenny Baker. Kenny co-wrote the tune with Bill Monroe in 1970 as a member of Bill’s legendary Blue Grass Boys. I had the great fortune of recording a duet version of Jerusalem Ridge with Kenny himself for my album Heroes (1992). The arrangement of the tune for this duo is similar, except I expand the role of the 2nd violin by giving it plenty of chops. I also introduce a section that features a 20- to 30-second canon on two parts of the melody. The result is an exciting, adventurous duet that exhibits some of the energy and rhythm of a full-band rendition of the tune. -Mark O'Connor

Album notes writer Professor Péter Kováts, a Bartok-Pasztory Award winner violinist from Hungary, compared Mark O’Connor’s duo compositions/arrangements to those of classical composer great Bela Bartok; “The roots of Mark O’Connor's compositions are in the traditional American fiddling styles, and I am sure his unique and excellent settings will serve the same goal that Bela Bartók’s Duos serve. Being a concert violinist and university violin pedagogue, I welcome the birth of these fantastic O’Connor Duos and wish great success for them!”

Incredible performance! Thank you Maggie and Mark!
If Jerusalem's ridge could ever be called beautiful this is it, just awesome to listen to.....I love it, you sir are a true master!
Amazing performance! They really play well off each other!
One of my favorite fiddle tunes in the whole world but my dog can't stand it!!
Great work! Beautiful music, beautiful minds, beautiful people! Wish more people could recognize true talent, instead of following whatever the idiotbox tells them to. Mark is a LEGEND.
Now this is something really beautiful ... excellent !!
Absolutely Beautiful I come back to this often! It's just Godly Amazing!
WOW is all I can say. I saw you play many years ago in a little theater in Ishpeming , Michigan and have always wanted to see you play again. This is one of my favorite tunes. I think Mr. Monroe wrote it for the mandolin but I don't recall. I now live back in my native NC mountains and I'm so glad to see the exploration of music in all its forms, but bluegrass will always stir my emotion like no other. Fantastic duo with another great musician, Ms. Maggie! Thank you so much!
great song! love the scenery too!
I have been looking for the two of you for years...I just didn't know who you were!!! Thank You for being here...I don't have to tell you just how awesome you are...but I will...AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful playing and scenery!
My very dearest old friend wrote this tune. He passed away about 4 years ago. It makes me miss him, but makes me smile at the same time. Yall's version is beautiful!
Most Excellent! This makes my day. Thank you for posting!
OMG, you're both so talented - made for each other! What a beautiful couple...thanks for sharing your work and happiness with the world!
Outstanding. You made Kenny proud. Larry Lowe
I heard this wonderful piece in Spotify's Grammy nominees playlist. thought it'd have more views than this -.-
Couldn't have chosen a better tune writer to build upon. Great stuff.

Expect Mark O’Connor. That was excellent.
Like the contrast between the pastoral Surroundings and the elegant clothing. Beautiful playing, too. Your playing makes me try practicing more to make up for lack of talent.

Nice! ;) Post more! :D
I'm the 1000 like. Yipee.....
And your wife is just as awesome..
some of the strumming (sorry I don't know what you call it on a violin) in the middle of the song "rocked," reminds me of how apocalyptica played rock on four cellos.. Some people say nothing new is happening in music just rehashing old things, but this arrangement proves there is an innovative direction in music...
5 stars

+ksaylard Darol Anger has a DVD out featuring Casey Driessen and Rushad Eggleston. Driessen also has short videos out for download on his site. These would be two of the best resources you could find.
hello
Great version! FYI there is no apostrophe s at the end of Jerusalem. It is titled Jerusalem Ridge....

+Michael Bub Not according to Monroe's publisher. We were advised to rename it with the apostrophe so we followed their instructions on it since they handle the legal rights to the tune.

+Mark O'Connor It is also listed on Heroes with the apostrophe and Warner Bros was also very through in checking the real copyrighted title.

+Mark O'Connor He may have stated it both ways in that it shows up with varying versions. But we are going to call it both as well... and also cite Jerusalem Ridge in the titles as well.
Maggies wrist cover?, is neat. )))
My goal! Just so you'd know!
:D
Sorry, I meant to say Northern Michigan University rather than Ishpeming.
I like it faster like Michael cleavland

Great version, rendition, and playing. However, I don't think there is any possessive in the title.

+Bruce Bushaw It appeared on Heroes as Jerusalem's Ridge and cleared by Kenny Baker on that as well as the publisher. Warner Bros went over it with a fine tooth comb. We believe he might have been impacted by his own trip to Jerusalem and described it both ways, the ridge where he was born and his trip abroad.

+Mark O'Connor On the first two recordings "Bill Monroe - Weary Traveler" and "Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe" (both 1976) it is listed as "Jerusalem Ridge". I'll stick with the verifiable historical record, and what I hear coming out of Bill's and Kenny's mouths. I can understand WB bullying people into using their copyrighted title, but that doesn't make correct.
@markoconnor

+Bruce Bushaw Warner Bros didn't bully anybody into changing the title, they simply wanted the legal title so they could list it clearly and they could pay the writer. Baker cleared the title when the Heroes album was recorded and Monroe is on the same record. WB checked with their representatives as they were exact on all legal matters like proper crediting of intellectual property. People do change titles and the composer certainly has every right to if they want. Mark O'Connor has changed a few titles over the years as well.

+Mark O'Connor Thanks for taking the time to discuss this. Can't change the past - the version that I listen to most (Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe) was, is, and always will be titled "Jerusalem Ridge".
