To this day most of society has not caught up to the level of this series yet and probably never will. I grew up watching Babylon 5 in high school. It changed my life and the way that I still think about things to this day. Babylon 5 should be mandatory viewing as far as I'm concerned.

"Babylon 5" was FAR ahead of it's time. Within it's level of CGI/SFX, storyline and character development as well as the continuity and complexity. B5 was NOT made for the stupid. Recently watched the entire series again, including specials/movies. It holds up amazingly well. STILL, one of THE best Science Fiction series to ever be made. Not sure which is the better writer, Straczynski or Moffett.

B5 was doing the "golden age of television" back in the 90's. Today it's common for shows like Game of Thrones to have sweeping arcs, and kill off main characters. Back then it was unheard of. Back then most shows, but especially sci-fi dramas, were committed to maintaining the status quo every week. B5 "went there" every time. What if the commander doesn't survive? What if your planet gets destroyed? What if your entire species gets wiped out? B5 was never afraid to go there, so you could never tell what would happen from week to week. Nobody was safe. Plot armor didn't exist at all. Kinda like real life. B5 felt real. You weren't led by the nose to some obvious predetermined outcome like the Star Wars prequels for instance. So then when things went down like the Shadow War, or the Narn problems, or Sherridan going to Z'ha'dum, you were riveted in your seat. Just when you think you're starting to figure out how things will go, there's a stunning plot twist like the Vorlons playing weird games with the fate of the galaxy.

i completely agree with you, and there was one thing that B5 had that star trek never used to its potential, andreas. g'kar's wisdom and the way he acted in that role was phenominal.

I don't think Babylon 5 has ever developed the following it deserved. It could be that because of it's episodic story arc format you can't just jump in half way through. You need to see it from the beginning to really appreciate it. I consider Babylon 5 to be among the finest SciFi series ever made.

Sadly, Jerry could never have foreseen execs at WB deciding to almost bury B5, and give it no support in any kind of transition to HD whatsoever. Otherwise he would have been right. B5 holds up amazingly well, and a digital/HD makeover would help sell it to cable/streaming services for decades to come. IF Warners ever bothered to do it. It would lose money in the short term, but make a profit in the long term, and B5 would become a legendary show rather than a highly respected cult show.

He was right it did become more than a cult classic but a good piece of art. Syndication didn't happen for some reason. It has not been on US television since 2003. But at least 5 original cast members have gone now for any film to be made. Doc, Zathras, G'Kar, Danny, and now CDR Sinclair. What a great show.

Don't be afraid to say B5 was/is better than star trek...it was/is better. The character development afforded by a 5 year story arc is brilliant I watched when it originally aired...this year I finally convinced my older Star Trek loving brother to finally watch the "show with the guys with the funny hair"...he is overwhelmed by the excellence of B5. JMS provided us with a TV Novel. Star Trek was a Serial. I am still a fan of Star Trek...its just B5 makes you care for the characters more.

Even if B5 would have the same crappy SFX of Blake's 7, it had one thing over all other Sci-fi shows, a 5-year story-arc. They all use it nowadays.Shows you that if you don't treat people as dummies, you get what you deserve and vice-versa. JMS said we were smart enough to appreciate a good book and he wrote one for us, much appreciated Joe. You even brought me into comics. Your 9/11 Spiderman is packed airtight for my children to read when I'm passed beyond the Rim.

Nowadays space operas lack 90s era of positivism. B5 was about wars, but there was also a hope, it's not a paradise of the future but I'd prefer living there than what portrays Battlestar Galactica (the show's great, I mean the theme it projects) or current StarTreks.

The biggest problem with babylon 5 imo is that it does not have the follow ups shows like the original star trek did. Some high quality shows like babylon 5 and farscape would have had quality follow up shows that pushed the visibility of the franchise.

B5 won't turn cult like star trek did in the 1970s - and really I'm grateful. It's barely a memory now - going out on Legend of the rangers didn't help (JMS was almost George Lucas like at the end.) Farscape is a distant memory too. Of course star Trek has been rebooted since being run into the ground - and can look forward to being rebooted like batman once JJ is gone, Star Wars prequels bad - Disney is set to create a live expanded universe that will probably end sour given enough time.

If you thought Babylon 5 was a small niche then you are wrong, You need to watch all 5 seasons of babylon 5, and then you will probably say it was the BEST sci-fi series of all time... I think i would be bold enough to say that it was better then star trek but Im not gonna go into that in fear of being bashed by millions of star trek fanatics :P The first season started out slow but after that, it was great storyline, great acting, great pacing, great special effects (for its time), etc.

I admit I was late into B5, I think I saw a bit of the first season and thought it was a Star Trek rip off. But then I caught an ep of series 2 and I thought, 'hey, this is good, has a plot, characters'. Went back and caught up, (and series 1 wasn't the best, but seeds were being planted), watched series 2 and was a convert from then on. Story! Character development! Fine acting (dubious script in places, c'mon, admit it!), Neil Gaiman must have agreed, he did an ep way before he did Dr Who.

Seriously, one shouldn't care about fanatics or fanbois of any label. B5 started to use computer animation, which Star Trek producers said they wouldn't do. Few years in, ST started using the same guys. Also humans in B5 are much more realistic - they're not godlike figures of ultimate power and morality, but flawed and pretty close to being the worst race in B5. And as far as space battles go, medieval armies had better tactical ingenuity than fleets in Star Trek ever did.

Scott McCloud I guess it depends on why you are watching. I watched the series for the plot and character development, and I’ve rewatched episodes on my iPhone. Still an awesome experience - and even more of a cautionary tale today. If you watch only for the special effects and to be immersed in sights and sounds, then of course you’ll be disappointed
