    That window killed their thrust. The idea is to create low pressure in front of the craft and high pressure behind. The craft attempts to stabilize eh pressure, by pulling the craft forward. The intake has to be unobstructed, or to have a duct that brings the intake axis, in line with the direction you want to go. They could have made a split duct with intakes on both sides of the cab. Something like this: intake___ \ ____engine intake___ /

    Turbine engines exist that are small, not as loud, are not dangerous. Scary is subjective. The OH-6 I flew 51 years ago had a 250SHP turbine you could pick up and carry. The scary part came from the low level flying and the odd bullet or RPG. Years before that Chrysler built a series of turbine powered cars and firetrucks. I saw the firetruck in action and it seemed to be about as loud as a diesel powered truck. I never had the chance to see the turbine powered railroad engines. But I would guess that hey were big and noisy. Oh and yeah turbines really aren't the best choice for a car. : )

  • @Avetho

    @Avetho

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@fred1barb The only time turbines become a choice for a car is as an electric range extender and in a small form factor. They run at their peak efficiency all the time and turn a generator that keeps charging the battery as you drive, so that combined with regenerative braking you'll never have to pull in to a charger. They weigh around 90 kilograms with a 10k hour maintenance interval (this is the Hybrid Kinetic H600 turbine) and output around 60kW of power at 40% thermal efficiency, a number subject to rise as we learn how to optimize the design for maximal peak efficiency instead of weight or power output.

  • @NoEgg4u
    @NoEgg4u2 жыл бұрын

    I suspect that the reason for the slow speed is that the jet engine is pushing thrust downwards, which pivots the nose of the boat downwards. So the nose of the boat is being pressed into the water, creating lots of drag. Aim the jet engine upwards a bit, and that will lift the nose of the boat, and will probably result in good speed. Cheers!

    That's true but the front surface of the car is always going to be subject from lots of resistance by the water, ideally trying to pivot the vehicle to some small degree. Of course what you say would certainly improve the outcome, but this situation is hard to remove entirely. Having a longer vehicle would also help, too, as well as mounting the engine as low as possible to lower both the center of gravity and the moment of the force

    For everyone wondering why the car didn't move that fast: it's a jet engine that requires a lot air to flow through it (sucks in air from the front, and blasts it out from the back). The placement behind the glass was not a good idea as everything in front of it would be sucked in it, including James and Jeremy. They didn't operate it anywhere near full power, it consumes over 300 gallons a minute at full power and would suck everything in it.

    I could be wrong, but I dont think that type of engine would work on water unless the output was below water, You don't see ships with huge engines shooting out the back into the air, its output is under water because it has to be transferred that way for maximum speed.

    Ever since the days of Top Gear I've marvelled at all the amazing adaptions & stunts they've created over the years, driving sportscars through Romania, the Toyboater and caravan pisstakes being some of the favourites, the scariest was probably the homophobic reaction in the US southern town to Richard's 'Man Love' car. This water car film has to be up there with the rest, the hilarious speedometer and Jeremy's '70 is a 100' dial and the 3mph speed achieved. Yet none of that matters because what's important are the ludicrous and imaginary stunts and doing them plus the hilarious commentary from all 3 and the fade out of Captain Slow reeling off the reasons for this particularly epic failure. Since last December I've become a part time carer, looking after my newly widowed 85 year old mum who has colonic cancer (Europe's most common cancer) and has lost interest in doing anything and doesn't want to wake up in the morning. Last week she got her 3 offspring to sign the DNR form. She's given up and just wants to be with our Dad. At the days end we sit and watch her TV and one evening, on a hunch, I put on the 1st episode of Clarkson's Farm which she loved and was keen to watch more, even mastering the TV remote (something she had no previous interest in doing) and is looking forward to season 2. I'd like to thank the Producers, editors, the Trio and camera crews for all the memories and moments they've created to make us all laugh. Because laughter is the best ever medicine and it's free. The 3 of them should get an OBE or an MBE for what they've done, Captain Slow for cookery, the hamster for engineering and Jeremy for helping people to understand farming and farmers and for the 'receiving one in the nads from a sheep' clip shown in the Clarkson's Farm titles.

    One of the major problems is the "cockpit" was directly in front of the jet. It cant pull in enough air with that obstruction in the way. The pontoons were also creating too much drag esp after being driven into the water. Also, water is much denser than air.
